Black Friday Outlook

Reuters:

Consumers made repeat trips to stores and spent more on bargains this holiday weekend, but the early rush is unlikely to save retailers from a bleak sales season, analysts said on Sunday.

Early results from the Black Friday weekend that kicks off U.S. holiday shopping showed that sales grew both in stores and online, fueled by repeat trips, heavier online sales and deep discounts from retailers across the price spectrum.

Thank god for the foreigners coming here to take advantage of our slumping dollar.

I went to several malls on Black Friday as I have done for the last seven yeas, but this time there were not that many people as in years past. I was able to find a parking spot close and regardless of which store I went to first, I was able to find that store's advertised deals as none had sold out. Went to another mall on Sat, it was dead. This doe snot bode well for retailers.

More evidence (anecdotal, I know) that the Wal-Mart tragedy was caused by economics, not crazed consumerist greed and mob mentality.

I went to my local mall on Saturday morning at 9 am (they opened at 8) and the place was empty. Deserted feeling. Maybe all the early-bird shoppers got it out of their system on Friday? I don't know, but I also left without buying anything. The urge to buy is very dependent on psychological cues, and it just wasn't happening for me. The whole exercise seemed stupid. I'm knitting gifts for those I love.

Funny, to hear the "mainstream media" tell it, this was the best holiday EVER. (At least according to AP radio news.)

I've never heard retailers say they had a good Christmas, Never.

Maybe they need a new strategy rather than relying on the holiday season to stay afloat.

If everything was slashed in price how could they say it was a good day? I'm hearing that in my area yet stores had 70% off?
