Pirates

Matthew Yglesias:

In addition to being a booster of the two actual wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, Bill Kristol and/or his publication has, at one time or another, also called for the United States to go to war with North Korea, Syria, Iran, and Sudan. And now he's got another war he's like to start:

And while [Bush is] at it, perhaps he could tell various admirals to stop moaning about how difficult it would be to deal with the pirates off the coast of Somalia (isn't keeping the shipping lanes open a core mission of the Navy?) and order the Navy to clobber them. If need be, the Marines would no doubt be glad to recapitulate their origins and join in by going ashore in Africa to destroy the pirates' safe havens.

I'm all for this as long as Kristol sends any or all of his 3 kids there to help fight for his wars.

That's an excellent idea! Maybe we should first send Kristol as an emissary to the pirates to deliver the message of his eminent war on a boat all by himself.

People, this man is not clueless. In fact he very well thinks out whatever he does or says. He plans and schemes like Lucipher.

And what has Lucifer done to you to offend him like that by comparing Kristol to him? :-)

Huffers are brave attacking other Americans. If they would only stand up to pirates as well our problems would be over.

If they are attacking U.S. property or persons, then the military should get involved. These kinds of thugs should be eliminated by an international force and the U.S. should be part of it. This piracy problem is a byproduct of our failures in Somalia during the 90s. These pirates are getting millions of dollars to perpetuate their evil and need to be stopped by any legal means necessary; however, it should be by an international force and its purpose should be limited to stopping the piracy.

It would be nice to think that the wingnuts would tire of Kristol. He is never right but neither are they so I guess it a perfect match. We're stuck with him. As the preeminent chickenhawk he is a first tier coward and has much blood on his hands. Prison is where he belongs.

I say we lob the right wing pundits at the Somali pirates until they cry uncle. Shouldnt take too long. One Limbaugh and a Kristol should do it.

I like this one! Continual broadcasts of right-wing 'pundits', large and small. Limbaugh, Kristol, Huckabee, Romney, Anne Coulter, Hannity, Glen Beck, Lou Dobbs.....the pirates would be screaming 'uncle' in a week, tops! And air pollution levels would probably drop dramatically over the US as an added bonus!

Kristol, Rove, Bush, Cheney. Rumsfeld, Condi, Palin, McCain, Limbaugh, etc, all need to be on that ride going to fight the Somalian pirates!

Good riddance to bad rubbish...

Has Bill Krystal ever served in the military? He's awfully quick to send other people's loved ones into harm's way.

I was thinking the same thing.

Isn't it funny how many neocons avoided serving in Vietnam war but are the most agressive with regards to starting armed conflicts and are also quite willing to call those with differing opinions unpatriotic: Chambliss, Rushbo, Cheney, Bushie

I thin we all know that there are people out there with goofier ideas than Bill Kristol. However, someone has wisely confined them to a realm of no credibility. Why then does Kristol even have an outlet for his consistently war promoting and "lets someone else and you fight" mentality? The fact that he has a column or appears on any network news and opinion show is a testament to the shallowness of the pundit class. He actually gets paid for his drivel. No wonder journalism has sunk to depths that would embarrass a used car salesman.

Disagree here. It is a company problem, not a military one. For one I think it costs less to hire some hard core security and arm them then it does to pay a ransom. Mount 50 caliber machine guns on the ship on all 4 sides, and if something comes near it shoot the tracers will put holes in the pirates and thier boats.

Guess what, after awhile the "pirates" will decide to hunt smaller prey. We do not need to have our military do this, make the companies provide their own, and just have a strict lock down for the weapons when they reach a port. A military escort is a waste of money.

A 20 millimeter rotary cannon would do nicely with a few private security people to man it, Blackwater comes to mind and the Saudis have the money, let them deal with it. If these aren't US flagged vessels, it's none of our dam business.
