A-Rod And Madonna In Mexico City At Same Time

MEXICO CITY — Alex Rodriguez and Madonna were together _ in the same city, anyway.

The New York Yankees star was in Mexico City on the same weekend the pop star was performing there. It wasn't immediately known if the All-Star third baseman and Madonna met while in the Mexican capital.

When asked what he thought about being in the city at the same time as Madonna, Rodriguez said it was "very good," without elaborating.

Rodriguez spent two hours Sunday teaching children to bat at a new sports center built on a landfill in the poor suburb of Nezahualcoyotl while Madonna prepared to perform for a sold-out second night in Mexico City as part of her "Sticky & Sweet" tour.

Rodriguez and his wife divorced in September, months after he made tabloid headlines for a rumored, but denied, dalliance with Madonna.

Less than four weeks later, Madonna and filmmaker husband Guy Ritchie announced their own split after nearly eight years of marriage.

Rodriguez, known by fans as "A-Rod," was invited to inaugurate the sports center by Mexico's richest man, Carlos Slim, whose Telmex Foundation sponsored its construction. The site includes two baseball diamonds and 25 soccer fields.

"It's a pleasure to talk about baseball, to talk about the importance of keeping children off the streets, out of drugs and out of all the bad things that there are in this life," the New York City-born Rodriguez said in Spanish.

Why is it that the one mention of Mexico City concerns Madonna? Mexico City has a very diverse history, starting with its days as Tenochtitlan. Yes, I know that Mexico City now has some of the world's worst air and one of the highest crime rates. But it still deserves more than "something involving Madonna happened here".

Why didn't more people ask questions about Madonna's adoption of a baby from Malawi? Instead of just helping the baby and his father, who only gave him up for adoption because his wife was dead and he was poor and had no one to care for his son, she stepped on the country's adoption laws and took the baby back to England to raise while the "details" were worked out.

She made a huge deal about adopting this baby--apparently, without her husband's full consent or cooperation. Now the family she supposedly provided is coming apart, she's on tour even though she doesn't need the money since she's worth over half a billion dollars, and she's having an affair with a married guy, breaking up HIS family.

WTF? Is anyone worried about her adopted son and his father and what will happen to them?

HER child was in an orphanage in one of the poorest nations in the world. He will be loved and receive opportunities one can only dream of, what he will do with them will be his choice. Who's wellbeing are you really concerned about ?

Opportunities? To be separated from his father? He is not an orphan. His father is alive and if Madonna cared about him she could have saved his entire family. This was a shameless act of self-indulgence and vanity.

The idea that celebrity kids are well cared for and have "opportunities" is a fantasy. Some do, and some are just as neglected as any child without "opportunities."

The point is: She took him, disregarding the Malawi adoption laws, and disregarding her husband's lack of full consent in the matter. Now the household is broken, and instead of being private and focusing on her children to help them cope, Madonna is on tour and involved with a married man. Opportunity is pretty selfish.

Come on, admit it. If I agree that some of the Madonna sniping is cheap and misogynistic, will you admit that she herself fueled a lot of this by her own pomposity? If she had just been another successful big entertainer, shaking her thing and pleasing the crowd, then people would have ignored her private life. But she had to go and forget it was all about doing the dance, and instead she embarked on a self-important proselytizing movement. People like to like their stars, but when they get preachy, it bugs. And then when they stumble, it takes on a life of its own.
