What's Your Reaction?
Brad Pitt

Actor Brad Pitt fell in love with New Orleans in the early 1990's while filming Interview with the Vampire. "New Orleans has its own mind...its own thing. It has a real spirit. It's the most authentic of all American cities." In its January '09 issue, Architectural Digest catches up with Pitt when he returns to welcome Katrina victim Gloria Guy back to her new home built by the actor's Make It Right Foundation.

A year after the New Orleans storm, Pitt was horrified at the lack of progress in repairing the damage it wreaked, especially in the devastated African-American populated Lower Ninth Ward. "I couldn't believe nothing was going on. I recalled the pictures of people on roofs, begging for help and I couldn't believe that this was our America."

Determined to put his dual passions for architecture and environmentally-sound development to work, he and several partners started the Make It Right Foundation, whose aim is to build 150 homes for residents of the lower Ninth Ward - one of the hardest hit during the '05 hurricane. He invited architects from around the globe to New Orleans to submit sustainable - and affordable housing solutions. Pitt convened a meeting with the architects, residents and community leaders to establish guidelines for rebuilding the neighborhood. "I never had any idea that so many people would show up for this. The model works and it's replicable."

Although many thought the Lower Ninth Ward should be abandoned because its land was below sea level, Pitt argued that other wards - some populated by white and middle class were on lower ground and nobody suggested abandonment there. "It seems to me that this is about fairness. We may have been designed equal, but we certainly weren't born equal. I feel great happiness whenever we level the playing field."

Six of the originally-planned 150 homes have already been built through the Foundation. Looking to the future, Pitt believes Make It Right is a model for projects around the world. "We've cracked something here...these houses redefine affordable housing...this is a proving ground for a bigger idea that could work globally. This project is not mine anymore. It's so beyond me."

But the day AD talked to Pitt, the day he helped Gloria Guy and her family move back in, crystallized why he put his passions and his celebrity behind the Foundation he created. "You have no idea," he says, "what a high it is for me to see the delight on people's faces when they see how these homes work."

Brad Pitt is a jerk and a lousy actor currently buying his way in to an Oscar for a poorly acted movie called The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Will he be able to con the academy? They tried awfully hard to get Angelina an Oscar for her stint with Clint Eastwood - does Pitt seriously believe he deserves an Oscar? The guy is one of Hollywood's biggest jerks and an even bigger no talent actor!

Actually OS2GUy...you won the "JERK AWARD", so we cannot possibly give it to Mr. Pitt...man, nearly everybody who visits this forum voted for you overwhelmingly...Pitt will just have to wait his turn....which will leave him time to help a lot of other people...dang!

I've seen the film which I can pretty much say that you have not .

It is fantastic and will no doubt be nominated for 7-8 Academy Awards.

You my friend will eat your words.

How can you disparage a film which you have not seen ?

Tell you what......I am certainly going to listen to someone who uses TMZ for their news! Thanks for the laugh!

Sadly, no that's not a typo. Press conferences and photo-shoots take up a lot of Brad's time. Maybe less publicity and more productivity might be in order.

Habitat for Humanity has built over a 100 homes in New Orleans. St. Bernard has built 154 homes. Brad has built only 6 and we are supposed to celebrate him instead of the unsung heroes who have been a lot more productive building homes while he poses for photos.

Last I heard it was eight. I think (I am really unsure of this number but it is in the neighborhood) for Habitiat for Humanity New Orleans Musicians Village is about 100. St. Bernard Project has rebuilt 154 homes. That is it for the big rebuilding projects in NOLA. Over 200,000 homes destroyed and that is it. But New Orleanians are "whining" if they complain. Go figure.

So habitat built 100 homes and Bernard built 154. Tell me again why we are celebrating the fact that Brad has built 6 homes? With his fame, money and connections shouldn't that number be much higher? I guess press conferences and photo-shoots take up a lot of Brad's time

8 homes have been completed. Many more in various stages of construction.

Yes, finally. One wonders what rich and famous Mr. Pitt was busy doing between 1990-2004. Spending his money on face peels and $1000 cargo pants to be exact.

Likable actor, family man .....

Charity work? Establish a foundation, perks are tax breaks, PR/publicity, raising the salary per film, motivation ... questionable.

Balanced against other actor's who are involved in family and public service without becoming a front page attraction.

I'll celebrate the unsung hero's who sit daily with hospice patients, whose names we'll never know.

Beautifully said and very moving. It reminds me of this guy I dated in College who would volunteer 2 times/week at the University hospital unbeknownest to most people. He would cuddle babies who were sick or abandoned. There are millions of people who every day do amazing things without saying - "look at me everyone, here I am."

Its obviosly more than saying here I am. If your college BF was popular, whether he liked it or not, his actions would be in the papers. Its just the nature of the game. Get used to life.
Besides, if you guys help so much in private and are happy with it, why the heck trip about someone getting praise. If you want praise for what u are doing, sound the alarm...if you think your charity needs to be private then shut up and stop hating.
With a celebrity status comes alot of influence. He is on the magazine obviously to influence someone somewhere. Maybe if you were put on the magazine you too would but Brad gets more attention because of his accomplishments. Get it!?!?!?!?

The thing I love about Brad and Angelina is that they have set it up so that if you ever criticize them for anything, their rabid fans always come back with the charity card. Just because they do 'nice' things for people doesn't make them the most awesome people that ever lived. They exploit these acts of charity to help people and to help themselves. I'm sorry if their fans are too blind to see that. I admire people who help others and don't run around bragging about it every five seconds. There are people who are way more charitable and do a lot more for people in need and don't expect never-ending admiration in return. Sorry, but that does not include these two. Deal with it, kool-aid drinkers.

It's sad that Brad and Angie's fans always have to bash Jen to make their idols look good. JA does a of charity work. She just decided not to run around the world bragging about it. If she wanted to compete with Brad and Angie she would. It would certainly do wonders for her image. But maybe she decided exploiting people to make herself look good was immoral. And it could be that she doesn't view charity as a competitive sport? Good for her.

"Nice" things like bringing hope to a devastated American city that was abandoned by their own country. Talk about Kool-aid drinkers! Never in my life would I have ever expected Americans to turn their backs on their own. They not only did, but did it to my home. I find it disgusting that people could complain about someone that does such a selfless thing as to help the forgotten. But, if you can abandon your own countrymen, what is a little bitching about "self absorbed" celebrities. Right?

Kudos to Brad Pitt. He has figured out what truly matters in life.

As for the naysayers, go get a life. Brad had been actively involved in relief for the poor prior to dating Angelina. Perhaps if his ex had spent more time supporting her husband instead of partying in Europe she wouldn't feel so jilted. Brad and Angelina are kindred spirits.

I just don't understand all the negativity. Using fame and money for good is great. What a bunch of sour people who come here and are always negative.

Acting in movies is great. I am not an actor, but I sure love a good movie. And, if some actors get rich, than thats great. The studios shouldn't get it all. And they are not always in the news because they want to be.

Please try to be more positive. It will be good for your soul.

Brad Pitt spent 1990-2004 focused on himself and his dermatology visits so it's nice that after humiliating his wife in front of the entire world, he finally started caring about someone other than himself.

I guess just because Brad Pitt is a celebrity he can't be considered human. Almost everyone I know goes through years and years of vanity; if I could get rid of acne scars and other imperfections I would too. And as for the whole divorce thing? How is it any different from other adulterers and divorcees that find new low when the other has gone out? It's not his fault there's a multi-billion dollar business that feeds a very hungry public on the private, personal lives of celebrities. You wouldn't know anything about how he humiliated his wife if there wasn't, and frankly it's none of our business. That s*it happens every day. Deal with it.

P.S. Oh, no! He's changed from a spoiled brat celebrity to a philanthropist who funds and promotes housing for people displaced by natural disaster! I HATE HIM!

Exactly! All the nay-sayers have pristine backgrounds, donate their time and money to charity, have never:
divorced
changed their minds about a relationship
broke a heart (with the media following their every move).

If I could do what Brad does, and if I was asked how it felt, I'd be all, "This is amazing, it feels really good to help others with my fortune."

What say you?

Well maybe if she'd been a better wife to him, she'd probably still be married to him. Who needs a shallow, narcissistic woman who spends all her time lying on her áss by the swimming pool or blowdrying her hair? Selfish twit couldn't even be bothered giving him a baby.
