I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Brit Hume

Pittsburgh Post Gazette:

During his dozen years as the anchor of Fox News' flagship nightly political newscast, "Special Report," Brit Hume has always managed to convey a certain seriousness and gravitas -- even as viewers of a liberal bent scoffed at his cable network's claim to be "fair and balanced."

But during a recent wide-ranging telephone interview to discuss his upcoming retirement, the 32-year television veteran seemed positively giddy when asked how he felt while anchoring his last election-night broadcast on Fox -- during which a Democrat won the White House. In one newspaper report he was described as looking like "the world's most depressed Bassett hound."

"I don't think any reasonable person who watched that would have come to that conclusion," Hume sputtered, seemingly caught between amusement and outrage. "We had a rollicking broadcast. We had more fun that night -- we went in with the attitude that we were going to have a great time and we did."

Now Hume, 65, is ready to let someone else have all the fun, or at least most of it. He's stepping down as anchor of "Special Report," although he'll still be on the air for about 100 days a year, serving as a senior political analyst, anchor for special events, panelist on "Fox News Sunday" and occasional substitute for its host, Chris Wallace.

Hume, whose "Special Report" is the highest-rated political program on cable television, is, quite frankly, exhausted. "If you're doing a one-hour program on a cable channel and trying to keep the quality up, you work very hard, the days are long and it's an intense competitive business, and it wears you down."

It was a thing of beauty. Watching the losers-side was the best entertainment.

The clip when they call Ohio while Rove is explaining its importance is classic. Brit looks as if the sky has fallen on him. Just absolutely stricken.

I think he was the last good guy on the TV. I guess a lot of people will write tasteless comments about him, that is our job right? But he was the last of the old school newsmen.

Now we have Olberman, Mathews, Anderson, and who ever the flavor of the month is on the networks. The only one worth watching now is Tina Fey - - -

He wasn't honest. He was a propagandist posing as a journalist. Hannity is even more dishonest but he at least is hired to be a partisan commentator.

Hume can't hide the fact that he looked downright depressed after the election was called for O.

Why is he still on? Milking it for all its worth!

If he's "going fishing," as Tom Brokaw did, we'll be seeing him now more than ever.

This is one time that losing a major jounalist figure from its roster won't hurt this media outlet at all. With him it was biased, untrustworthy, and anti-American, and without him it will continue its established version of "fair and balanced." It remains to be seen how much news will be seen on Fox News in the future. Everything that Obama does right will be quickly noted in a few sentences and then immediately overridden by the news of a car chase, a crime against a child, etc.

Already, most of Obama's press conferences are given little airtime. If Obama makes a misstep or something bad happens in the world that Fox can somehow blame on Obama, that will get extended airtime and much discussion. If he economy turns around in 18 months, it will be bearly mentioned. If we sucessfully pull our troops out of Iraq in 16 months, there will be little discussion beyond the threat that somehow this action will end up a disaster.

As far as Fox News goes, nothing positive about the Obama administration will ever receive more than a cursory acknowledgement.
