Think Progress:

To mark World AIDS Day, Saddelback Pastor Rick Warren is hosting a Civil Forum on Global Health at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Warren will present President Bush with the first "International Medal of PEACE" from the Global PEACE Coalition in recognition of his unprecedented contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS and other diseases. The "International Medal of PEACE" is given for outstanding contribution toward alleviating the five global giants recognized by the Coalition, including pandemic diseases, extreme poverty, illiteracy, self-centered leadership and spiritual emptiness. The Bush administration reports that its AIDS initiative helped treat two million people living with HIV/AIDS.

The Emperor Has No Clothes.
So a GOP pastor creates an 'international' peace prize to hang around W's neck for a portrait to hang in his... 'presidential library'.
One more farce in a long line of farces.

Who is this Rick Warren and did he come out of the same CIA training camp as Bin Laden?

...and Nixon opened China....
This Bush will certainly go down as the worst (or one of the 2 or 3 worst) presidents in history, and I feel only waves of disgust.

Just had a search for this Global Coalition of (capitalised) PEACE. Lots of articles about Bush's forthcoming honour and there's a small student group from Ottawa. Is this for real?

Is PEACE an acronym perhaps?

Please Excuse Atrocities, 'Cos Evangelical?

I'm glad that President Bush is being recognized for his efforts. It is not fair to focus on a man's mistakes without taking in consideration his achievements in other areas. I fully expect to be plucked like a turkey for this comment, but the adults on this site will recognize that people can respectfully disagree. It's one thing to say that the man has made mistakes, but quite another to say that the man should be tried as a war criminal for doing his darn best to protect the American people, who elected him for that specific purpose.

I'm from planet earth, and I recognize that the survival of this planet is at stake if we don't change our ways by making the switch from dirty fuels to clean energy. I believe that blaming Bush for all our pains is a waste of time since in reality we are all responsible for what happened in Iraq. If it weren't for our addiction to foreign oil, Iraq would still be a freakin desert with very little power to possibly threaten anyone. If you wish to be honest with yourself, then recognize that our addiction to oil provides the money to the Saudis, who in turn finance the madrasahs that spread their narrow-minded views across the Middle East and other parts of the world.

C'mon....a peace medal!? He's gotten us into two wars. If you want to recognize him for his work on AIDS, then give him some sort of medal for improvements in global health care (or something like that). A peace medal? - no f#&^%$g way.

I agree that a peace medal might have been somewhat over-the-top, but my comment was about giving the man credit for some of the good things that he has done. If you want to be fair, let's begin by recognizing the fact that since 9/11 there has not been, to my knowledge, a major U.S. terrorist attack. In part, I suspect that has something to do with Bush having taken the offensive and the terrorists being on the run. On the other hand, Bush screwed up royally by not making sure that the intelligence that he got was accurate. This failure on his part was the result of surrounding himself mainly with people who agreed totally with him. He also screwed up by not really having a contingency plan in the event we were not greeted as liberators by a percentage of the Iraqi people. Most of all, he screwed up by not realizing that in a dictatorship like Saddam's, a lot of good people joined Saddam's party simply as a way to survive and feed their family. Had he convened all Iraqi soldiers after the invasion ended and continued to pay them their salaries, the insurgency might have had very little chance to take hold, and the situation in Iraq would have stabilized a lot sooner. These errors that I mentioned turned his presidency into failure.

No, I'm not. Many people with AIDS in poor countries are so desperate that they commit kidnapping and murder in order to get the medicine that they need to survive. So, by helping these people, it is conceivable that Bush might have saved the lives of many innocent people. Recognizing Bush for his AIDS' effort doesn't mean that one is out of touch. It simply means that one is trying to see both the good and the bad. How would you like it if you were to be judged only on the basis of your worst mistakes? Before you ask for a man's head, I simply suggest that you try to put yourself in his shoes for a while.

A false prophet gives a medal to a false peacemaker while both have supported war and the followers of both cheer.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

Does anyone see a little irony here? Awarding Bush with the International Medal of Peace is like awarding Joseph Mengele the Nobel Prize for Medicine. Why does this remind me of The Godfather Part 3 when Michael Corleone is honored by the Church? I lot of people must be slapping their foreheads.

If I was a member of that church - with Bush's track record - I'd change churches.

Any respect I might have had for Rick Warren - has just been negated.........VERY POOR JUDGEMENT!!!

There isn't a medal on this earth - THAT GEORGE W. BUSH SHOULD RECEIVE.........AS FAR AS I KNOW THERE IS NO MEDAL FOR INCOMPETENCE AND COWARDICE, DISHONOR AND SHOWING NO INTEGRITY.................

If anyone does find one - THEY CAN PIN IT ON HIS A**!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What if your mother, daughter, or someone you dearly loved had been the innocent victim of a terrorist? Chances are you would have been lauding Bush instead of cursing him. If you don't believe it, call all the people in Mumbai who just lost a loved one and listen to what they say. After that, you may not be so quick in the future to demonize a man like Bush. We are all responsible for 9/11 and we are all responsible for what happened in Iraq. Only by accepting our own contribution to the convergence of factors that lead to both of these situations can we do our best to mitigate these sorts of tragedies in the future. I choose to look at the man in the mirror, and I suggest that you do a little self-introspection as well in order to discover your own contribution to this mess.

Is this like giving an award to yourself? Will this be used as a defence in his war crimes trial? "Your Honor, how can I be tried for war crimes when I was awarded the medal of piece in my last term?"
