Think Progress:

To mark World AIDS Day, Saddelback Pastor Rick Warren is hosting a Civil Forum on Global Health at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. Warren will present President Bush with the first "International Medal of PEACE" from the Global PEACE Coalition in recognition of his unprecedented contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS and other diseases. The "International Medal of PEACE" is given for outstanding contribution toward alleviating the five global giants recognized by the Coalition, including pandemic diseases, extreme poverty, illiteracy, self-centered leadership and spiritual emptiness. The Bush administration reports that its AIDS initiative helped treat two million people living with HIV/AIDS.

YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING ME!!!!

Anything good that this man has done in Africa has been offset by what he has done to the rest of the world!

WTF???!!!

Good luck in trying to get anyone meaningful to accept any subsequent such medal.

Weaselboy, the lying warmonger, gets an award for peace. Makes as much sense as anything else in the Smirking Chimp's bizarro world and alternate universe. Part of their "family values" is the deliberate refusal and psychotic inability to stipulate to simple physical & historical fact.

"illiteracy, self-centered leadership and spiritual emptiness." Shouldn't gw be receiving aide from these people to alleviate the 3 out of the 5 global giants recognized by the Coalition.
This organization obviously has a seriously defective calendar, it's 5 months 'til April Fools day.
Obviously an organization that never wants to attain any credibility.
In the future I'm going to be looking to them to award Hussein, Marcos, B e g i n and many others posthumously.

this award must be from the same people who gave Sarah Palin the Medal of Intellectual Curiosity.

This is a shockingly mistaken award, a peace award given to a man who is responsible for murders of hundreds of thousands of people.

In order for this award to have meaning, I first need to know what exactly is the Global Peace Coalition and who are its members? There is no wikipedia entry for this group and google comes up with a one-page site from a U of Ottawa student group with dead yahoo group links.

These rock-star preachers have bought into the illusion of their own self importance. How else would you explain this abomination? One can find a flood of oxymorons in any sentence that attempts to flatter or embellish Bush in any way. Think about it for a minute: Bush and peace anyone? How about Bush and "Think tank" or even this doozy - Bush and library. Gasp! Either way, his presidency has been as painful a failure as his legacy is laughable. Thankfully, both his days and those of his right-wing religious acolytes in the media are coming to a somewhat slow, but certain end.

Please tell me there has been some clerical error, a misquote here. I think I just read that Bush got an "international" medal for "PEACE" because of his "outstanding contribution" toward alleviating "illiteracy, self-centered leadership and spiritual emptiness." That cannot really be what they meant to say, can it? Please?

it's pathetic! Give anyone a medal for financing your own cause regardless of what they've done to the rest of humanity is so very typical of the philanthropic egoism and hypocrisy that permeates the world of giving to feel good about your sins!!

Giving Bush a medal for peace is like giving a porn star a medal for abstinence.

Rick Warren's signature theology resonates a great deal with Dub-ya's governance style. Both believe in a deity that does not act singularly, but micromanages the lives of the faithful instead.

Perhaps Warren believes that Dub-ya's personal purpose in life is to combat HIV/AIDS in developing nations. His failure to do zilch for people in this country makes sense: HIV targets innocents abroad but should be dismissed as an affliction of the morally suspect here in the United States.

If knowing and pursuing one's purpose in life satisfies Warren's concept of "religious virtue," and Bush's purpose is narrowly (dare I say arbitarily?) defined, I suppose the fact that he has inflicted untold suffering by conducting wars of aggression and allowing his cronies sell the American people down the river economically can be entirely overlooked. To my way of thinking, the moral character of men and women should be measured not only by their deeds, but also their misdeeds. To suggest that Bush's deeds and misdeeds collectively promote "peace" merely cheapens the term.

Despite the words "Global" and "International" may I point out that this likely only a pitiful local American effort. There is NO real international organisation that will give Bush anything except a raspberry.

I believe the only international part about it, is to do international missionary work. Otherwise, as far as I can tell, it's just a collection of US church's that make up this "coalition". I could be wrong though.
