David Gregory will take the reins as moderator of NBC's "Meet the Press," the Huffington Post has learned. Gregory has been a leading contender for the permanent spot since Tom Brokaw stepped in as interim moderator following Tim Russert's death in June.

In recent weeks, a short list including Gregory, Andrea Michell, Gwen Ifill, and Chuck Todd had been considered the top candidates for the position, while Katie Couric and Ted Koppel were viewed as dark horses.

Brokaw will conclude his duties as interim moderator this weekend, when he will interview President-Elect Barack Obama.

NBC News did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Update: NBC responded to Politico regarding this report, saying," I don't know where they are getting this. We have nothing to announce." Gregory's agent, when contacted by the New York Observer said he could neither confirm nor deny the report.

Very disappointed decision.

David Gregory is such an ingratiating sycophant. The image of him as a chorus boy for Karl Rove's roast destroyed his credibility as a journalist forever, in my opinion. He really belongs on infotainment programs like Dateline or Access Hollywood instead of a major news program. Why did NBC go with the boring white guy when they could have made a forward thinking choice with Gwen Ifill?

Perhaps Gwen Ifill was offered the job and turned it down? She has a pretty nifty gig with PBS that she might not have wanted to give up. I'm just saying...

Oy Vey!

I don't know if they were trying to save money but not considering Gwen Ifill or even Ted Koppell (he's not working at Discovery anymore) but when the ratings begin fall, so will Gregory, contract and all.

Wonder if they're still hiring old anchors at FOX?

Gregory is NOT going to ask the tough questions, he never does. In fact he almost seems to relish NOT asking questions that will offend or challenge anyone's assertions. I am waiting to see if NBC actually makes this ridiculous choice, but frankly they SHOULD have chosen Gwen Ifil of PBS. She isn't afraid to ask the tough questions, she understands the issues and she is nobody's fool.

Plus, she's a more qualified and more interesting Journalist than Gregory will ever be.

Boy... now I REALLY miss Tim Russert.

Wow all that talent and they choose this hack. I would have taken Luke Russert over this clown. I mean really no one watches 1600/Race for the white house right now.

I am not into celebrity and tv personalities. But I really do miss Russert on Sunday morning. Gregory can't carry Russerts houseshoes, much less carry his show. Geez, I sure hope that someone at NBC is reading all of the comments on the blogs. The overwhelming majority of people seem to be pained and dissappointed by this choice.

Does anyone have a link to MTP comments?

No to Gregory! If they choose him I will choose not to watch!

David Gregory - nice guy, but not MTP material. His interview techniques are irritating and "scratchy." He could be one of the lay-offs as far as I'm concerned. The pick should have been Katie Couric! Her interview of Sarah Palin was brilliant. Katie has years of tough interview experience and is always a pro. Chuckie T. doesn't have the interview techniques necessary to carry off MTP. I guess I'll be moving on over to ABC and George Stephonopolous.

I like to watch the Sunday morning talk shows, but the over-the-top round-the-clock mourning frenzy that followed the death of Tim Russert was just silly. He was hardly the deity that coverage suggested. David Gregory -- whatever his views -- ALWAYS asks the first question to the conservative guest. ALWAYS. I kept track for 30 days because I had MSNBC on while finishing up the work day.

Not sure if that represents his political beliefs or bending over backwards to be fair, but true.

Of all the possible replacements, HE'S THE ABSOLUTE WORST! I can't stand him now, and I doubt that I'll be watching MTP again after he takes over.

They could at least pick someone who isn't so obviously an obnoxious Republican partisan. At least with the other people suggested, I might have an idea where they stand, but it isn't OVERWHELMINGLY OBVIOUS. The only time Gregory tried to break ranks with them was when Bush wouldn't answer his REAL questions (but Bush is a different kettle of fish altogether, lawbreaker that he is) ; however, when it comes to McCain and every other Republcan, he's all kissy-face.

NO THANK YOU!!!!!

I don't watch Gregory now, and I won't if he gets the MTP job
