David Gregory To Moderate "Meet The Press"

David Gregory will take the reins as moderator of NBC's "Meet the Press," the Huffington Post has learned. Gregory has been a leading contender for the permanent spot since Tom Brokaw stepped in as interim moderator following Tim Russert's death in June.

In recent weeks, a short list including Gregory, Andrea Michell, Gwen Ifill, and Chuck Todd had been considered the top candidates for the position, while Katie Couric and Ted Koppel were viewed as dark horses.

Brokaw will conclude his duties as interim moderator this weekend, when he will interview President-Elect Barack Obama.

NBC News did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

Update: NBC responded to Politico regarding this report, saying," I don't know where they are getting this. We have nothing to announce." Gregory's agent, when contacted by the New York Observer said he could neither confirm nor deny the report.

I personally like David Gregory, but find him a terribly boring interviewer.
He's good as a White House press correspondent, but filling the big chair should be reserved for someone with a lot more personality.

I think Rachel Maddow would be a whip smart choice for her sheer brilliance, affability, intellectual rigor, probing questions and intelligent follow ups. She can go off script in a heartbeat and ask questions in response to unexpected answers from guests.

I also like Chuck Todd, though I'd like to see an audition before I'd sign off on him.

Have to agree on this one. I watch all the MSNBC news shows except Gregory's - he seems to miss the point. Will probably be the end of Tim Russert's masterpiece.

Long before David appeared on the Today show he played the same part on Imus, seemingly afraid to contradict anything Don said for fear he would be banished from the show. He wasn't alone, (Tim didn't stand up either, frankly, and he could have because Imus adored him and Brokaw) but David, Harold Ford Jr. & Lieberman were particularly spineless. David was the only one who stood his ground with Bush one or twice, and it was so unusual and got such a lot of press that one wonders whether he only did it to raise his profile. I think he could be a good interviewer if that was what drove him, but unfortunately it seems like David doesn't have a real sense of himself as a journalist and will do what he thinks he has to do to become a "star". MTP needs someone like Brian Williams who amazingly maintained his integrity when every show on MSNBC but his was a piece of garbage, John Gibson's prime among them. Apparently DG is not liked by NBC staffers either.

I think there are better choices out there for this job. I am not a fan of his. I Love Lucy reruns on TV LAND maybe a better choice than watching Meet The Press if David Gregory gets this job.

Devastated that Chuck Todd didn't get the job and feel sorry for Gregory because NBC has set him up to fail and he doesn't deserve that, it is just that he doesn't fit on MTP. You need an insightful person who has something special. Chuck Todd has something special, very different from Russert's but uniquely his and very worthy of MTP. NBC has made a big mistake. Chuck Todd will go elsewhere.

I predicted this pick and am sorry I was correct.

The smug, unbalanced repertorial style and clearly right leaning political bent of Gregory makes this pick a sad legacy leap after Tim Russert.

Not sure what the honchos were thinking ....but no one really could discern Russert's politics through his unwavering balanced and tough inquiry.

David Gregory is no Tim Russert. No one could be.

I would have preferred Brian Williams, a deeply thoughtful and smart as hell chronicler of the times.
Knowing that would remove Williams from Nightly News, I guess there was not much of choice for NBC.

Charlie Rose could have risen to it, but probably loves his own niche in which he runs the show, literally and figuratively.

What will we watch on Sunday morning?

Glad Obama is on with Brokaw.

Gregory and Barack? The Prez Elect is way too smart to make that a pit stop anytime soon.

Under the wire goes our soon to be Commander in Chief.
