Silicon Alley Insider:

During the FCC's December meeting, chair Kevin Martin plans to push for a free, but porn-free Internet service that would be available to all Americans. Reports the Wall Street Journal:

The proposal to allow a no-smut, free wireless Internet service is part of a proposal to auction off a chunk of airwaves. The winning bidder would be required to set aside a quarter of the airwaves for a free Internet service. The winner could establish a paid service that would have a fast wireless Internet connection. The free service could be slower and would be required to filter out pornography and other material not suitable for children. The FCC's proposal mirrors a plan offered by M2Z Networks Inc., a start-up backed by Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers partner John Doerr.

Another, "We believe in freedom unless we don't approve.", sort of argument.

This is simply a foot in the door, a behind the back way for the FCC to gain control of the internet and what you are allowed to access. Don't be fooled people, the right wingers are out to control your mind, they're don't give a rats butt if you have a piece of bread much less free internet.

good luck with that. porn makes more money than hollywood. we're hard wired. to paraphrase kurt vonnegut's friend to him re: "Slaughterhouse Five" - 'you're writing an anti-war book? you might as well write an anti-glacier book.'

He wants Internet too be free of porn not free of charge. Our streets and movies and TV are want too be porn merchants just watch the shows. There's a family show with children based around who got who the night before and put downs of women.

No porn what are Judges and our fearless leaders too watch.
What about my rights and free capitalism are we now balling out the Internet biggies.

This is what they did back in the fifties with Playboy CENCERSHIP.
IF ITS BLOODEY ITS OK NUDE ITS BAD.

Seems like a good idea that would allow poor and low income students and elderly
access to the net without a monthly subscription bill. I mentor a high school student
who has an old computer but cannot afford internet service and this would be
perfect for her. She does use the free local library for access to research information
for her homework assignments, but getting to and from the library is not always possible
as her mother does not own a car.

I don't see that this harms anyone or has a downside, and it would certainly
have an upside for a lot of people who cannot otherwise afford to use the internet.

That is good. However to really 'close the loop' the Gov. needs to complement this with FREE internet access in public places (airports, train stations, big cities) and promote/stimulate the idea of free wireless internet access everywhere.

Hmm, for some reason I keep thinking that 'nothing in life is free' and this 'free' internet doesn't sound so free to me. With that said, if we're talking a parallel internet for users who just want information, hell go for it. Me, I think I'll pay for the internet and keep the 'porn' option open since I have no idea what these guys are gonna consider porn or objectionable. Is it cool to show an Alien fighting a Predator is that not suitable even though it's science fiction? How about animals mating? The problem with this sort of thinking is that it allows the privileged few to dictate what is 'suitable'. If a parent wants to regulate the internet there are programs for that and something called parenting.

Why can't the FCC do something constructive like reverse the mass media giant mergers? Always with the smut chasing and fining the Howard Sterns of the world. Who cares?

Sensing the coming Armageddon danger, I suggest for the FCC, Christian Holy Warriors and Bush Administration Corporate Crime Fighting a new holy incantation, after they cover their ears with their hands, start humming ...la la la la, I CAN’T HEAR YOU! la la la la”.
