Palin Rally

As the Senate race in Georgia rushes to Tuesday's climactic runoff election, Republican incumbent Saxby Chambliss and Democratic challenger Jim Martin spent Monday on the stump across the state as the latest polls showed Chambliss with a 4 to 7 percent lead.

"The race will turn on whether the tradition of Republicans returning to the polls in greater numbers than Democrats in runoff elections will prevail, or whether the almost 1 million automated phone calls by Barack Obama to African-American and longtime Democratic voters will somehow motivate Democrats to return to the polls," Matt Towery, CEO of Insider/Advantage, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The Wall Street Journal reports that unprecedented amounts of money are being spent on both sides leading up to the runoff:

Overall, interest groups, candidates and political parties have spent more than $17 million during the four-week runoff campaign. That is about as much as was spent during the nine-month run-up to the November election, according to figures collected by the Federal Election Commission, the candidates and their political parties.

Keeping an eye on the race were several dozen Huffington Post volunteers, who have attended campaign rallies and monitored robocalls and mailers sent out by both Chambliss and Martin.

Pureterrah Witcher reported on Monday morning's Chambliss rally in Savannah featuring Sarah Palin:

One of four stops she will make in a state that backed her GOP ticket with 52 percent of the vote, at the rally Palin challenged her supporters to join her again in an effort to "maintain checks and balances" on an administration that could receive a "blank check" from a Democratic majority Congress.

"This is an attempt to put government back on our side. Let it begin in Georgia. In the months and years ahead we must build the case for reform with more than words, but action. The United States is counting on you to send Saxby back to the U.S. Senate," Palin said to a spirited crowd of supporters.

"We all have Georgia on our minds. All of this depends on you," Palin said referring to the song by the late musician Ray Charles...

And as the Republicans are faced with steep political dilemmas; losing a number of Senate seats in the final tally of the Nov. 4 election, Palin commented on the party's future; acknowledging reform would have to be priority.

"I will admit we've got some fixin' to do. But we need your help to do it; to reignite the common sense, pro-working class conservative cause," said Palin.

Getting out the vote alongside Palin, the state Republican Party lineup included, Georgia Gov. Sunny Perdue, Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson, Rep. Jack Kingston (R-Georgia), State Sen. Eric Johnson (R-1) and Rep. Jerry Keen, (R-Georgia).

With the security check points gone and nearby parking available to those who arrived on time, supporters filled the auditorium space quickly to see the woman who has become a political dynamo in less than six months.

"I predicted she would be McCain's running mate. She's got what it takes to make it in politics. She's tough, bold, smart and can rally the troops like no one else," said Steve Beveridge, of Richmond Hill, Georgia. "This is show time and they brought in the right one to get the job done."

Watch this video of Palin's rally:

Here are some pictures taken by Mony Morgan of Palin's appearance at a Chambliss rally at the James Brown Arena in Augusta at 8:30 on Monday morning:

According to Morgan:

- No Chambliss T-shirts, buttons, etc. It was ALL Sarah Palin. She was all the others talked about and all the merchandise purchased there or worn there was about.

- No one attacked Barack, they all talked about checks and balances and keeping one party from controlling all branches.

- It was an all-star cast of GOP locals from the sheriff up to the Governor.

- When she finally came out the crowd went wild, and during her speech people (mostly men) screamed "I love you Sarah."

Morgan also photographed a meeting of Martin supporters at Richmond County Democratic party headquarters:

The headliners were 30 minutes late, invoking the memory of Dr. King and his famous CPT. Colored People Time. By the time they had arrived we had already done the prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, and sung the National Anthem.

Jim Powell spoke, then Congressman Hank Johnson from GA's 4th District was at the rally in John Lewis' place. Then Jim Martin. Jim reran the change message and talked about supporting Barack Obama in the changes for America. He also talked about Chambliss' rubberstamping whatever Pres. Bush sent forth.

The Democratic office was packed. The rally was originally scheduled to be held outdoors but the morning temperatures were at 36 degrees, that is very cold to a southerner. In contrast to the Palin event, this rally was more like attending a black church. With speaker and the audience answering back. It was passionate and we were in very close quarters. When Jim Martin arrived everyone joined in singing "America the Beautiful." The songs were led by union workers in the crowd. These union workers were from all across the U.S. as far away as CA.

Several volunteers, including Rubbie Major and Margaret Ann Shick, reported receiving robocalls from the Chambliss campaign highlighting the candidates' positions on abortion and taxes. Rupert Fike reported receiving a push poll call that asked "Do you share concerns that Jim Martin would become a rubber stamp to the far-left policies of Barack Obama?"

Frank Mack reports on early voting, predicting a good turnout for Tuesday's runoff:

I monitored this center daily during the general election. During the week of early voting preceding the general the lines extended out the doors from opening until close every day. A reasonable estimate would be crowds of 350-400 outside while the interior held approximately 100 at all stages of waiting and voting.

For this runoff there was not a line outside the building at all any day of the week yet. I would estimate that 75-80 people either stood in line inside the building or were in the process of voting at all times during the 30 minutes or so it took me to pass through.

In other words the early voting numbers will not touch the general in this area. On the other hand there is a line of people early voting......for a run off.... I'm 50 and I have never seen that before as we had never seen what took place in the general before.

Let's see.....Saxby shut down a Vet who fought for our rights, lost his limbs and was called a UnAmerican.
Now Palin has a son in Iraq. Guess according to Saxby her son would be classified as UnAmerican.
So, in my mind Sarah doesn't support her son. What a shame. She needs to go back to Alaska and begin doing her job! Both as a Governor and a Parent. Haven't your children gone on long enough without you there to guide them in school work, peer pressures etc etc?
She reminds me how my mother's words really do make sense to me now. And that was sometimes a REAL LADY should be seen and not heard. I now know what she meant.

Lying to the people of GA by stating that Jim Martin would make their families unsafe is a positive talking point?

For me, Sarah Palin on televison equals the mute button. Her voice grates on me, similar to Rosanne Barr or Rosie O'donnell. But, Palin is a gift to the Dems. You can educate someone but you can't make them smart, that's "you betcha's" problem. She just isn't smart.

Having perused Barrack Obama's two books, Dreams of my Father and the Audacity of Hope I have formed some generally positive opinions concerning his intelligence and character. The flimines of his resume causes me a problem, but I wish him well and hope for the best. What worries me more is the cultlike trance of his supporters. I am reminded of the prophesy and warning given to Americans by the great French writer, Alexis De'Tocqueville, that one day Americans, tired of the burden of liberty and pursuing utopian dream of 'equality' would 'prostrate themselves at the feet of a single master'.

Frankly, I prefer the cut of an ordinary citizen-politician like Govern Palin to such a terrifying prospect

The repugnican party can't survive without a majority of ill informed supporters.

When you read and ask questions, and stay knowledgeable, repugnicans are out of their element.
Obama talked issues Mccain used bigory/racism,character attacks on Obama, to fire up his supporters.

The repugnicans boasted, when Dubya was Appointed, that the office of the presidency
had it's first MBA. This MBA,almost brought down the American economy and life as we know it,because he wasn't qualified, but appealed to his base of,Evangelical-Bigots.

A lot of lives were lost needlessly,in Dubya's attempt of a Fathers day gift to his father,by invading Iraq,A MADE UP WAR!!!

I could not agree more!

I have never understood this silliness about wanting a president I can have a beer with or hang out with.

I have an IQ of 135. With the country in the trouble it is in, I want someone much smarter than me at the helm of the ship of state. Obama is a smart man and even he is going to need a lot of help turning this disaster around. Thankfully, he is surrounding himself with smart people.

Nevertheless, it is going to take all of us, doing whatever we do best, to help him drag our beloved country back from the brink.

Wow, GeneCar, you're just now looking into BO's resume? Where have you been? What, you just knew all along that you could never vote for him so you didn't even bother to check him out?

And what the heck is a "flimines"? Also, excuse the heck out of me, but I am not nor was I ever in a "cultlike trance". I've been studying cults for two thirds of my life, and only a rightie would call out a BO supporter for acting in a cultlike manner. Get over it. He won. We're no longer supporters. We are now constituents.

But then again, never mind, if you prefer abject stupidity to responsible leadership, there's no hope for you anyway.

The "cult-like trance" is to be found at the Palin rallies. I've never seen anything like that at the several Obama rallies and meetings I attended--just intelligent, well-spoken and caring people from all walks of life and all age groups trying to take their country back from the trance-induced right wing religious fundamentalists in our midst who used their bully pulpit to preach not the teachings of Christ but the theft of an entire nation's government for the most powerful and wealthiest in the world.

And take their whole "base" with them.

Funny, but appropriate, the many definitions of "base":

base

adjective, bas⋅er, bas⋅est, noun
–adjective
1. morally low; without estimable personal qualities; dishonorable; meanspirited; selfish; cowardly.

5. of illegitimate birth.

Sweatshop products and sweatshop employees.
Go to the show department - must keep hundreds of Sri Lanken children employed at 10 cents/hour.
Gotta have a continuing supply of ditch-diggers so the ultra-rich can feed off our labors.
As for unions - I will give you a fine example of how they have ruined our country. My father worked 37 years at an oil refinery. Every year that company posted increasing profits - never shared with employees. He retired about 12 years ago after putting 3 kids through college. He and mom had a nice house in the burbs. To stretch his pension they sold that house and bought a mobile home (still nice) out in the boonies. 8 years ago the company, after posting a record profit, got permission to reduce its pension burden by 25%. 4 year after that they got permission to reduce pensions another 25%. 2 years ago, after making more money than ever before, they eliminated medical benefits for retirees. One of the company board members actually has a landing strip for his airplane at one of his homes.
Yup - I have seen a lot of evidence that unions are to blame.

Yeah we don't need no stinking unions. Why they promote commie things like wages that families can actually live on and rights for workers. We don't need that we need everyone working for 50 cents a day. Those poor CEOs only get bonuses in the millions, that just doesn't go as far as it used to. Yeah you are right we need more downward pressure on wages until everyone is broke. That will be the greatest.

Pleaseeeee, do not clump all us Georgians together. I am definitely not a fan of Palin's and cringed when I heard she would be here to stump for Saxby. I am shocked that Georgia did not go blue, in fact I along with others, saw the early voting and the faces in the lines and wondered if the voting actually was not in Barack's favor. I am out the door in a few minutes to vote for
