Obama-Clinton Rapport Will Be Key To Her Success

Leaving the news conference in Chicago yesterday where he introduced his national security team, President-elect Obama strolled out of the room arm in arm with his choice for secretary of state and one-time rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton. The gesture may have been a subtle indication that Obama is aware that one of the biggest questions about his choice of Clinton is the kind of relationship they will be able to forge in the months ahead.

Many of the most successful secretaries of state, though not all, enjoyed great influence with the presidents they served, giving them crucial leverage with foreign leaders and inside the national security establishment. But Obama and Clinton are only starting to develop the kind of rapport that could lead to that trust, and the ultimate success of the senator from New York in her new role may depend as much on Obama's willingness to admit her to his inner circle as her ability to master the intricacies of the Middle East peace process or North Korea's nuclear weapons program, according to senior foreign policy officials from past administrations.

I read an interesting piece a few weeks ago about SOS and working with foreign leaders. The article (may have been NYT, or possibly Washington Post -- I just don't remember) made the point that the truly effective secretaries of state were so, because the foreign leaders knew they were dealing not with the SOS but with the president himself. The SOS wasn't just a figurehead posturing or relaying "maybes," but facts. James Baker and Henry Kissinger were cited as the two truly superior and effective secretaries.

So -- for Hillary to be effective, and boy I want her to be! -- it's incumbent, really, upon Obama to give her the authority that she needs so that when she's dealing with foreign leaders it's as HIS emissary, not a figurehead official of the U.S. It's not so much whether she can do the job, it's whether she can do the job she needs to do if he doesn't give her the authority and backing she needs. I'm sure hoping he's smart enough to do that.

Only last March did Obama have Greg Craig put out a campaign statement completely ripping Clinton on foreign policy as utterly unqualified. Now it turns out Obama didn't mean it. He was just pandering for votes, nothing more.

The Obama campaign letter ends with these words, "Barack Obama does not use false charges and exaggerated claims to play politics with national security." a claim that the information presented is true and not inflated. Now, the very same Clinton is the MOST qualified person in the whole country to be Secretary of State!

So what else didn't Obama mean. Words, just words.

Is there a list of all the electioneering promises (lies) Obama committed to during the election? It seems his followers will spin for him no matter the size, number, magnitude or significance of the "electioneering" claims versus "governing". This is the we all should have known he was lying during the campaign while he, Obama, was swearing he wasn't that kind of politician, so his lying doesn't count argument.
