Obama-Clinton Rapport Will Be Key To Her Success

Leaving the news conference in Chicago yesterday where he introduced his national security team, President-elect Obama strolled out of the room arm in arm with his choice for secretary of state and one-time rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton. The gesture may have been a subtle indication that Obama is aware that one of the biggest questions about his choice of Clinton is the kind of relationship they will be able to forge in the months ahead.

Many of the most successful secretaries of state, though not all, enjoyed great influence with the presidents they served, giving them crucial leverage with foreign leaders and inside the national security establishment. But Obama and Clinton are only starting to develop the kind of rapport that could lead to that trust, and the ultimate success of the senator from New York in her new role may depend as much on Obama's willingness to admit her to his inner circle as her ability to master the intricacies of the Middle East peace process or North Korea's nuclear weapons program, according to senior foreign policy officials from past administrations.

Here's something the writers of this article might consider:

Why appoint her SOS if his REAL intent is to exclude her from his inner circle and undermine her effectiveness in a very dangerous world?

That could only mean he seeks friction with his SOS and failure for his administration and his country.

Have the writers considered at all what it means to walk "arm in arm" with her to announce her appointment before the world? Has that occurred with any other appointee?

Have two writers and a newspaper MIS-READ a person more than they have Obama?

Clinton is a bad pick for SoS. It may be Obama's administration, but the Clintons have been known to be the Clintons and that won't be good for Obama. With so many other great potential SoS candidates why in the world would he select Hillary with all the baggage that comes with it? Bill Richardson, a hispanic, would have been a much better pick and a wonderful tribute to the hispanic community that overwhelmingly supported Obama's candidacy. I must say I'm disappointed with this pick as well as with the Gates pick.

The press is bored and talking about economics is depressing. They want the 2008 election to last at least until the Florida straw poll in 2011.

Hillary-Barack seems like the Bennifer of 2008. They personally never disliked each other. Clinton knew that Obama was her blocking her only chance to become president. However, once her bitter disappointment ended at losing, she became a staunch supporter. She is grown up enough to realize that her career and the fate of the nation rests on Obama succeeding. She wants to be part of that success.

Unlike McCain, who still seems to hate Romney, Huckabee and anyone else who ran against him, Obama holds know grudges. He knows that elections are winner-take-all affairs and has nothing personal against those who play the game against him. He can spot talent and realizes that harnessing Clinton's social capital and abilities for his ends brings about the global changes he wants to see.

Sending Hillary Clinton, a global celebrity, to talk to the Queen of England, to President Medvedev or even to Raul Castro brings a lot of weight to Obama's message. People in Ottawa, Tokyo, Rome or New Delhi will flock to see the Secretary of State coming to visit, especially if she brings her husband.

Obama ran the most brilliant primary campaign against Clinton. He defused the Rovian Swift Boat operation without breaking a sweat. He has already proven to be a much smarter man than he likes to let on.
