Obama-Clinton Rapport Will Be Key To Her Success

Leaving the news conference in Chicago yesterday where he introduced his national security team, President-elect Obama strolled out of the room arm in arm with his choice for secretary of state and one-time rival, Hillary Rodham Clinton. The gesture may have been a subtle indication that Obama is aware that one of the biggest questions about his choice of Clinton is the kind of relationship they will be able to forge in the months ahead.

Many of the most successful secretaries of state, though not all, enjoyed great influence with the presidents they served, giving them crucial leverage with foreign leaders and inside the national security establishment. But Obama and Clinton are only starting to develop the kind of rapport that could lead to that trust, and the ultimate success of the senator from New York in her new role may depend as much on Obama's willingness to admit her to his inner circle as her ability to master the intricacies of the Middle East peace process or North Korea's nuclear weapons program, according to senior foreign policy officials from past administrations.

Obama is the president. All the people in his administration must follow Obama's directives, policy and vision. Hillary's job as SoS is to implement Obama's policy. Not Hillary's policy, which was defeated during the democratic primaries. It's up to her whether she wants to serve Obama the president or herself.

First, they leaked the trial balloon that HRC was to be SOS...and it turned out to be true. Now, they're leaking that Bill will be appointed to her Senate seat. I'm not a Clinton hater...don't want anything bad to happen to either of them...but their egocentric, Baby Boomer "adventuring" style, even in the midst of grave international danger, is self indulgent and depressing for those of us who can only stand by and watch helplessly. I still can't believe that Obama made this silly appointment. Let us devoutly hope and pray that David Patterson does better.

Yes, I agree that there will be a lot of Hillary for a bit... it's probably up to posters. I'll certainly give her a fair shake...it was difficult after her campaign, but Obama is smart in his choices. I'd like to hear a little more about the others and I expect we will. I liked Joe Biden's speech...I sure do miss that energy, real, passionate energy. It was nice to see; I needed it and it made me smile. Go Joe! Ya did a great job my man.
