Palin

Nearly a month after she and John McCain were soundly defeated in the presidential election, Gov. Sarah Palin took to the campaign trail, this time to help Republicans hold on to a potentially significant Senate seat.

The appearance by the Alaska Governor at a rally for Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss Monday was a highly anticipated affair -- not least because the Senate race could provide Democrats with a filibuster-proof majority in that legislative body.

But Palin's role as campaign closer said as much about her political fortunes as it did the national party. Still a veritable star in the GOP ranks, her draw seemed somewhat limited on the stump. While MSNBC carried the roughly 15-minute speech in full, CNN cut out only a few minutes in and FOX News didn't even go to the affair.

At the same time, Palin was actually tasked with speaking after Chambliss (usually the candidate himself gets the last word), and she did her best to rev up the crowd with a laundry list of red meat items: national security, pro-life measures, taxes, and spending. At one point she decried negative campaigning -- a tactic that led her to become the wildly divisive figure she is today.

"Republicans may be the opposition party today, but that doesn't mean we have to be the negative party," said the governor. "We have our path to follow. We have our own ideals to serve and we should always look for ways to work cooperatively with the majority party to serve the common good. America deserves no less than our greatest efforts today."

In between she offered praise for McCain, whose allies, according to campaign post-mortems, viewed Palin as a liability, diva and rogue political agent.

"It was just like Sen. McCain to put defeat behind him and see what more he could do for the U.S. Senate and see what more he could do to progress this nation," Palin said of McCain's own campaigning on behalf of Chambliss.

The Georgia runoff election will occur on Tuesday, after neither Chambliss or Democratic challenger Jim Martin were able to secure more than 50 percent of the vote on November 4. Public opinion polls show the race being similarly close the second time around, but Chambliss seems positioned to win reelection.

With Democrats currently holding 58 seats in the Senate, and with the Minnesota race in a recount, the contest in Georgia could give Democrats a filibuster-proof majority for Democrats. And, in the end, the idea of Chambliss serving as a buffer against one-party dominance was Palin's main pitch. On several occasions, the Alaska Gov. spoke of the need for political balance in Washington. Saying the Georgia was "on her mind," she concluded that the campaign between Martin and Chambliss had, nevertheless, drawn the eyes of the world.

"I'm kind of selfishly looking at this," Palin told the crowd. "This is not just for Georgia, this is for folks in Alaska, Hawaii and Maine... and in Washington D.C. This is for my kids and their future. We need Saxby because we need checks and balances in Washington. And we will not have that if Saxby is not reelected, Georgia."

It's a big mistake for us to pretend that Gov. Palin isn't going to be a strong Republican candidate in the future.

This little known Governor had just as many people at her rallies in Georgia as President Clinton, and more than any other Republican .......so she obviously has Republicans still standing by her and wanting her to lead her party.

Some say she is polarizing but let's remember that is also what they said about Hillary, and she was able to pull out 18 million voters. Being polarizing is no longer the negative people thought it to be.

So.......Let's hope the DNC will continue to keep a close eye on this newcomer and start preparing for 2012.

I am from Indiana, We went blue for the first time in my lifetime, thank God. Most of my friends, family, church members are republicans. Talking politics is not an easy thing for me to do with anyone in my neighborhood. I can say that for the most part I know of more Republicans who are affraid of Palin running in 2012 than Dems. Except for the base she is not highly thought of.

I thought that the folks in Alaska were going to take her back after the election. Why in God's name won't she just GO HOME - PLEASE. Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard, chewing on ice, cats getting it on in the middle of the night, etc. etc.

Maybe she could put those Nieman's clothes in a consignment shop & that would pay for her ticket back to AK where she can stare at Russia all day long.

Just have her go back to Alaska and never step foot in the lower 48's. Watching MSNBC this morning, you could tell the last thing they wanted to do was flash to Palin speaking......I for one, decided three minutes in that I couldn't take her BS anymore, turned off the TV and went to work very early....her look, her ridiculous vocabulary - trying to use the "right" words that she cannot even pronounce. She put herself out there, and she's going to get it back from the American public.

Please HP - NO MORE PALIN STORIES.... THE SHE'LL GO BACK TO ALASKA, I understand her kids love Caribou hungtin.....

This crowd is only concerned about check and balances when the Dems are the majority, when the Repbs are in power they couldn't care less about it. And this woman is the visit that never leaves.

Can't bring myself to watch her any more. *Yawn*.

If this LOSER is the future of the GOP, the party is over.

Nothing here to see folks.

It's like watching a funeral.

She's still wearing the election freebees.

And how much did the Alaskan taxpayers flip for this partisan trip?

Actually, that's a really ugly jacket- I don't think it was one of the freebies. If it is, she has horrible taste in what she decided to abscond with.

If Sarah is to be the "voice of the GOP", I say, AMEN to that. Let her speak, for God's sake and keep blathering on and on. It will secure the Dems in the White House and in every other house in America for the next 2 decades, at least.
One can hope..........

If Georgia goes red that will be a good place to carry out the conservative agenda of less government that Republicans love. If I were Obama, the first thing I'd do would be to cut all agricultural subsidies (Georgia got $252 million in corn subsidies and $700 million in Federal cotton subsidies), followed by cuts in highway funding, cuts in bridge maintenance, and pretty much cuts in all Federal subsidies so Georgians can enjoy all the government free investing they want to do out of their own pockets.

That's humorous. It's exactly how the Republicans would do it. While I think it would be deserving for them, I don't think Obama works that way.

Yeah,...... well......you know........I guess you're right. It sure felt good thinking about it for a second though. It'll be that much sweeter to see more Americans understand the role of government that Democrats espouse under Obama and to see the ranks of the radical right reduced. I'm back. Thanks.

Faux News didn't even show up at the event! That's awesome! LOL I thought for sure Hannity would pick up on the speech and gush over her yet some more. Is it just me, or when something doesn't benefit Palin directly she just doesn't seem to be as.. gosh, I can't even think of a good word to put here. She's not as effective, obnoxious, pious, hateful... She's still as stupid as ever though, that hasn't changed.
