NEW YORK — Rush Limbaugh has seldom been a fan of Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton. But the conservative radio pundit has given his blessing to her selection as the next secretary of state.

He calls it "a brilliant stroke" by President-elect Barack Obama, who opposed Clinton for the Democratic nomination.

Limbaugh weighs in on the new administration as one of Barbara Walters' "10 Most Fascinating People of 2008," which airs Thursday on ABC.

Says Limbaugh: "You know the old phrase, 'You keep your friends close and your enemies closer?' How can she run for president in 2012? She'd have to run against the incumbent and be critical of him _ the one who made her secretary of state."

On Monday, Obama announced Clinton as his nominee for secretary of state.

Rush Limbaugh is no longer relevant, even though he tries really hard to be by riding on the coat tails of those who are.

Nobody has any idea of how Clinton will work out as Secretary of State. She's smart, confident, and has many previous contacts. The problem is that she may have an agenda as well. A good test for Obama in terms of how strong a president he will be. Lincoln let Seward initiate much of his administration's foreign policy. Things are, of course, totally different now. Obama can't afford to stand back and let Hillary loose, especially considering her hawkish tendencies. It could work out well, or not. I don't think this appointment was a way to minimize her potential as a presidential candidate, because there's always a chance things go south and he fires her. In which case she will be in a strong position to criticize his administration and run as an opponent in 2012.

This is quite sad.....

1. Obama names someone to their cabinet
2. Limbaugh or Kristol praises the choice
3. Progressives / left wing bloggers freak out over Limbaugh's endorsement
4. Limbaugh/Kristol/Hannity sit back and laugh at the left's reaction.

They're messing with the democrats and enjoying the reaction.
At some point the democrats/left/progressives need to STOP WORRYING about what Limbaugh, Kirstol, NRO, Sean Hannity, et al think and say.

Progressives aren't 'freaking out' about anything Fattie McHatePants says...I for one think it's hilarious and as transparent as W's brain scan.

I see very little "freaking out" on this post. I would summarize the reaction as amused, sarcastic and dismissive--Rush is "irrelevant", "a bloviator", "a dullard", "moronic"--and primarily, "who cares"?

For the dumb and moronic, ordinary deeds seem extraordinary.

Although I agree with Rush about that one aspect of Hillary's appointment, I disagree with any insinuation that Rush made that Hillary is not worthy of this position. She's intelligent, experienced, respected in the world community and she has it in her to want to be the best Secretary of State EVER. In my opinion, it was not only a brilliant appointment in that it addressed the liabilities and risks that Hillary posed, but it also addressed Obama's determination to include the best and brightest minds in his cabinet.

However, I think Rush is making an issue of this to distract his loyal listeners and disciples from thinking about and holding him accountable for all the lies he told them about Obama leading up to the election! He's still referring to Obama as a "Chicago thug," to keep them worked up, but I notice that he hasn't made any reference to Wright, Ayers, Rezko or the radical Marxist socialist friend of terrorist that he ranted about for the last two years! Now that Obama is exposing Rush for the liar he is, both Rush and Sean will be finding new ways to distract their listeners from wondering what happened to the lies and smears they were told to believe!

I may agree with Rush this one time, but he's still a scum-bag!!!

Rush take it easy on the endorsements, your ditto heads will get so confused they will start bumping into each other. They won't know who there for or against anymore.

Limbaugh is trying to do two things here:

One, make Obama look like Macchiavelli by "keeping your enemies close."

Two, he implies that the Democrats are fractured along two poles, one the netroots and Obama and the other the DLC and Hillary.

So this is just the old Republican meme of making the Democrats look like an entity that will have trouble taking this country in a cohesive direction.

So yeah, the headline is so naive as to render its writer a completely clueless cypher.

All of a sudden I feel that Obama may have a big mistake in naming Clinton as Secretary of State. If Bill Kistrol also comes out in favor of her maybe he should rescind the offer.

So let's see, Rush Limbaugh, Karl Rove, and "Fritz" Lieberman . . . all approve of Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, and of several other selections for the new cabinet.

We must remember that Rush prefered Hillary Clinton to John McCain.

I'm not quite sure what to make of all this, but any credit certainly goes to Barack Obama.
