Damon Weaver

Hey, everybody! You all remember Damon Weaver? He's the ten-year old kid from Kathryn E. Cunningham/Canal Point Elementary in Florida who interviewed then-Senator Joe Biden during the campaign, heroically holding his microphone aloft as Biden yammered on and on, without stop, for a million hours. Anyway, Weaver charmed the internets with his poise and polish, and now, he's looking for bigger fish to fry -- namely, President-elect Barack Obama.

Weaver wants to snare Obama for an interview, and in a wonderful four minute spot, he lays out his case, discussing his school's news studio ("Where the magic happens!"), getting a testimonial from Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat*, and, more importantly, his reading teacher. Plus, he's not afraid to dig up the gotcha video of Obama's bowling failure! Weaver also points out how he comes from a part of Florida where sugar cane is grown, setting up some very probing, substantive questions on free trade and protectionism.

In short, THIS INTERVIEW MUST HAPPEN, AMERICA.

*It should be noted that Dwyane Wade's support for Weaver does not extend to letting Obama beat him in a game of one-on-one. It's all good, though -- Weaver still makes Wade an honorary homeboy. Besides, letting Obama win basketball games is Reggie Love's job.

Here's a novel idea. . . . .how bout using a picture of the young boy ACTUALLY SMILING instead of grimacing like 50 Cent? Is that so hard? Is it really so difficult to present young black males in a humane light? Just wondering. . . .

You're kidding, right? He's a little kid doing cool things. Leave him alone. It's hard enough to get ahead in this world.

I'm not downing him. My beef is with this choice of picture. Please get some comprehension of the context in a discussion before responding.

If you are black and this is the first thing that comes to mind, then you definitely have an inferiority complex. Why do you have to trash something so real and beautiful? He's 10 years old. I wish my 13 year old could have the qualities Damon is exhibiting. Go Damon!!

No. This is not my first comment on this article. You need to relax! You seem to have an
a**hole complex if you can't see the problem with presenting this young boy that way. Of all the moaning and b*tching we here about how girls are portrayed, I think it's only fair to review how males are done. Specifically black males. So how is that "trashing him"? The problem is the choice of picture not the boy himself. Some of you need to past 10th grade reading comprehension before responding with these petulant teenage comments that miss the point.

Mr. Linkins, I saw the original interview to which you are referring. Biden did not "yammer on and on without stop for a million hours." How grossly inaccurate and needlessly spiteful your comment was. Biden gave the young man a very nice, clear and CONCISE answer.

speakyourmind,

I hope Jason reads your comment and replies. I would like to know why he and the vast majority of the rest of the media and blogosphere continue their assault, ad nauseam, against the Vice President-elect and why they can't seem to understand a word Biden says.

If , instead of dismissing Biden's leadership and denigrating his statesmanship, they spent more of their time listening and learning from the preeminent leader on foreign policy and national security, then they might be able to share with their many readers some critically important insight.

By the way, if I recall correctly, Damon was impressed with Senator Biden and went so far as to say that he "is now my homeboy!". You can't fool Damon - he knows the real deal when he sees it. We need more of the kind of intelligence in reporting demonstrated by Damon in today's media and blogosphere - he puts most of them to shame.

I used those exact same words about Biden during the election; well, I actually said he was my "homie," but who's being knit picky. Give this kid the darn interview b/c he rocks!

"Where the magis happens"....so cute. You can tell these kids have school pride and take their work seriously. All the kids in the district watch their own news crew...I think that's great!! I know PEO will grant his request if possible.

Yes, and the school seems to have a lot of programs to get kids interested in learning.

Seriously, I think Obama might actually give this kid an interview. I can't believe he got Dwyane Wade and Shawn Marion. This kid is awesome.

For eight long years our nations pulse was weak, erratic and beating faintly. This past 4 November 2008 the life support was removed and she reemerged from hibernation. She has not lost one step coming back vibrantly as before with hope fulfilling her destiny. An experiment that continues to beam light to places where there was none. I see this in even this simple jubilation of a young man who has a personality, smile and eyes radiantly filled with something which has so desperately become anemic within our society - HOPE.
Godspeed Damon, Godspeed.

I am hopeful that the president-elect's people will contact Damon's "people" and grant him an interview. After all folks isn't this what it's truly about - our children and their dreams represents our nations future.

I loved the presentation and see a promising future for this young man. All he needs - or any of us is that chance to break through and grasp that brass ring.

I've only read a few negative comments here and those are from heartless individuals whose hopes and dreams died long ago. The rest of us remain young because we are not afraid to dare and dream.

Keep the faith.

I missed Damon's interview with Biden, but if he gets an interview with President-Elect Obama my advise is to memorize his questions so that he can look directly at his subject (President-Elect Obama) and not at a paper. If necessary, use an index card with questions in case you forget in all the excitement.
