Thousands Of Cab Drivers Strike, But Impact Slim
Thousands of holiday travelers leaving O'Hare International Airport found plenty of cabs waiting in line outside the airport Sunday, despite the decision of some drivers to strike that afternoon in protest of current fare rates.
Taxi driver advocacy group United Taxidrivers Community Council said drivers want a 16 percent fare raise by Jan. 1. The council said most drivers work 12-hour days and make less than minimum wage even though living expenses continue to rise.
Not all of the city's approximately 15,000 drivers belong to the group, and some other taxi groups opposed its call for a strike. The Chicago Professional Taxicab Drivers Association said its members would not strike for fear of angering customers during a troubled economy.
