As Obama was preparing to present his foreign policy team and (finally) formally announce his pick of Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State, aides of both Obama and Clinton were feeding the press quotes about how they've both always respected each other, and that "the people around each disliked the other candidate more than they ever disliked each other." See, during that 19 year primary when they attacked each other like wild dogs, it was because they liked each other so much!

Not so fast. We did our own digging into the Clinton-Obama relationship and, well, we found very little. So we decided to dramatize how we imagine Hillary and Barack went from mortal foes to best buds. Check out our completely made up photo dramatization below, which we like to call "The Road To Obama's Decision To Make Hillary Clinton the Secretary Of State of America" because we don't like catchy titles...

It's best to keep your enemies next to you, because you can always see what's up next.

Um, "mortal enemies?" I don't think so. This is a media meme. They were opponents who fought hard in the primaries and said a lot of things that most people understand as primary rhetoric and that the candidates also understand has to be said in order to make the electorate see the differences between the candidates.

It's an American tradition to say the most awful things about one's political opponent in either a primary of presidential election, and then appoint him or her to a very important position in one's administration.

Hillary and Barack were never "mortal enemies." They belong to the same political party and share basic Democratic and democratic values.
