Acupuncture works better than drugs like aspirin to reduce the severity and frequency of chronic headaches, U.S. researchers reported on Monday.

A review of studies involving nearly 4,000 patients with migraine, tension headache and other forms of chronic headache showed that that 62 percent of the acupuncture patients reported headache relief compared to 45 percent of people taking medications, the team at Duke University found.

"Acupuncture is becoming a favorable option for a variety of purposes, ranging from enhancing fertility to decreasing post-operative pain, because people experience significantly fewer side effects and it can be less expensive than other options," Dr. Tong Joo Gan, who led the study, said in a statement.

"This analysis reinforces that acupuncture also is a successful source of relief from chronic headaches."

Writing in Anesthesia and Analgesia, they said 53 percent of patients given true acupuncture were helped, compared to 45 percent receiving sham therapy involving needles inserted in non-medical positions.

How do you spell placebo? Pseudoscience.

So, if I inadvertently prick myself while repairing a loose button, will I cause harm to some part of my body, or heal some unknown ailment? Or, speaking of vibrations, is putting my phone on vibrate actually good for my health? How can such a low frequency vibration, like a thin needle vibrating in the upper levels of the skin dermis, have any more of an effect than putting my hands on a slightly out of balance dryer?

What that needle does is its vibrating at a sub-tactile level, you can't feel it but your body feels it. That vibration sends a message to the corresponding center in the brain that then sends a message to the body part or organ you want to calm down, or excite. The needle in the skin is just being anchored, its the vibration, like a tuning fork that is creating the dialog to the brain. Putting needles in haphazard like isn't a good idea, they can excite areas you don't want excited. You do need someone who knows what they are doing to do it right.

Yes, acupuncture is wonderful for treating infertility especially when used along side a medicated fertility cycle. There are numerous studies showing acupuncture's efficacy in regard to enhancing fertility. Also it can be quite helpful with the reduction of headache and/or migraine pain associated with side effects felt from the medication.
