Washington Post:

When Deborah Lawrence got the invitation from the White House, the Seattle-based artist decided to make a lefty political statement.

But she never expected it would hang on the official Christmas tree.

Laura Bush asked members of Congress to pick local painters to decorate ornaments for this year's 20-foot Fraser fir in the Blue Room. The globes (to be unveiled by the first lady tomorrow) are supposed to showcase something special about each congressional district. Washington state's Rep. Jim McDermott contacted a local arts organization, which asked Lawrence, a collage artist, to create the local entry.

Laura's press secretary: "I haven't seen the ornament, but I would hope that no one would take this as an opportunity to be divisive and partisan. There is a time and place for everything, and I don't think this is either."

Nonsense. The simple fact that the government is getting involved in a religious celebration is ALREADY most obviously political and divisive. Since it's a political event, there is no reason why this person's political view shouldn't be represented.

And don't forget, it is the Bush Administration which chose to include this ornament in the celebration, so they are 100% responsible for including something they consider to be inappropriate.

It has inspired in me the joy of giving! Giving subpoenas, that is.

I have issues with the war but that ornament stunt is just tacky and rude.

Of course no one at the White House read this ornament. That would involve reading. Now it will be even more awkward to dis-invite the artist. Well done, Ms. Lawrence - you nailed it.

And Pres Bush and Laura will treat her with their graciousness .... Lawrence will come to regret her rudeness.

While I agree about the graciousness of the current First Couple, honesty should not be misconstrued as rudeness.

"honesty should not be misconstrued as rudeness"

Really? After a big dinner, I usually have a monumental bowel movement. Honest.

So is it rude to disclose that "Truth" at the dinner table?

If art doesn't make a statement, it isn't art. If Laura wanted something pretty to hang above the sofa, she could have found people willing to paint a picture. Instead, she asked for art, and it looks like Lawrence obliged.

So what's the big deal?

The George and Laura already raised two girls, I'm certain they're quite familiar with childish hysterical tantrums.

Perhaps they might even get to teach Ms. Lawrence, a thing or two about graciousness and class.

Sorry Timmy, We are talking about a war criminal who carries the responsibility of the death of thousands upon thousands of innocents, who has tried his best to nap while his mandarins have run roughshod over our constitution, who continues to be the figurehead of a feloniously inept government. And it's childish and hysterical for Ms. Lawrence to say so to his face? What's childish is to continue to whistle a happy tune in fantasy land and let this man get away with his crimes.

"it's childish and hysterical for Ms. Lawrence to say so to his face?"

Yes.

She was asked to design an ornament for the Christmas tree, not to blurt out her ignorance of Constitutional procedure.

If she didn't support the President's policies, she could have turned down the invitation. That would have been the gracious thing to do.

It's like when a PETA member gets invited to a Thanksgiving party, and uses the opportunity to gross out everyone at the dinner table, with stories of factory farming practices.

Proper etiquette dictates, that polite company never engages in discussions of Religion or Politics. There is a time and place for everything, and this is not it.

yeah right-wingers are so all about graciousness & class -- just listen to 'em at a Palin rally!

Who said anything about Right Wingers? We're talking about the President, who was all about class.

And the story about the Palin rallies turned out to be fiction.

If you really wanted to hear people talk about doing harm to the President, you had to be listening to the Left-Wingers.

BDS. It's going to take years for some of these people to recover. Their entire lives revolve around their hatr.ed of Bush. It is reflected in everything they do and everything they say.

It's a Christmas tree, people. For one day each year you should give it a rest.

[For one day each year you should give it a rest.]

We will, on the soon-to-be National holiday, "Bush is no longer President Day," January 20th.

I plan to pop a cork and drink a toast, and happily let bygones be bygones. I'll stand up, ask for silence, clear my throat and say, "Later d. bag," or something appropriately reverential that sums up the man's worth. You won't be able to wipe the smile off my face for weeks.

From Sea-town----Actually it is rude, immature, classless and tacky. I find it more like a stunt from a talented but self absorbed adolescent. She had an opportunity to make something unigue that portrayed the NW and the season of good will.. Blew that one!

Looks like there is room on the Christmas Bush for a little dissent after all. (I'm guessing Laura was half in the bag when she hung it.)
