I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Karl Rove

In what was a remarkable admission that contradicted - to a large extent - the past statements from his onetime boss, former Bush strategist Karl Rove said on Tuesday evening that had the President known Iraq did not possess weapons of mass destruction, the United States would not have gone to war.

"In the aftermath of 9/11 the concern was about a tyrant accused of enormous human rights abuses," but who also possessed weapons of mass destruction, said Rove. "Absent that, I suspect that the administration's course of action would have been to work to find more creative ways to constrain him like in the 90s."

The remarks, delivered at a debate in New York on Bush's legacy, came amidst a vigorous defense by Rove on behalf of the war's purpose and outcome. At no point was it mentioned that the administration -- specifically Vice President Dick Cheney -- reportedly advanced faulty or poorly sourced information to fit the conclusion that Iraq possessed WMD, or that intelligence reports from the run-up to the war suggested that such a case was flimsy. Later in the event, Rove argued that Saddam Hussein was supporting terrorism, poised a grave threat to the region, and had systematically duped the international community into assuming he was armed.

"He told his interrogators it made him look big in the neighborhood," said Rove, before noting all of the Democratic officials who believed as much.

As such, Rove argued, the Bush administration was justified in the course it chose and the world better off for its actions.

And yet, his remarks stand in contrast to those offered by the president himself, both recently and in the past. In an interview that aired last night with ABC's Charlie Gibson, Bush declared that the greatest regret of his presidency was "the intelligence failure in Iraq." But he claimed it was "hard... to speculate" as to whether or not he would make the same decision to invade with the correct information.

Back in December 2005, however, Bush did just that, declaring the WMD issue effectively irrelevant when he said that, "knowing what I know today, I would have still made that decision."

"So, if you had had this -- if the weapons had been out of the equation because the intelligence did not conclude that he had them, it was still the right call?" Fox News' Brit Hume asked.

"Absolutely," replied Bush.

On Tuesday night, Rove wasn't the only Iraq war protagonist indulging in a bit of retrospection. Bill Kristol, of the Weekly Standard and Project for a New American Century fame, said he agreed with the sentiment that "the President would not in fact have gone to war if he had known what seems to be the case, that Saddam did not have functioning weapons programs at the time."

At the same time, Kristol too, argued that the decision to invade was ultimately correct, asserting that with Hussein still in power, radical groups would be more empowered, and radicalism would be resurgent far more than it is today.

Didn't know about the WMD? Oh really. Do the W.H.I.G., Plame, Brewster Jennings, and the N.I.E. tell us something about what Pinky didn't want us to know? Does Pinky anticipate some heat? Because this is a poor attempt at a history rewrite. It will not fly in an informed environment.

If a genie gave me 3 wishes, one of them would be for liars like Bush and Rove to show physical signs when they start a whopper: first the nose starts to grow, then horns sprout from the forehead and, just so they actually care, the "wedding tackle" starts to shrink away. Irreversibly, of course.

Rove and Bush and Cheney are ALL full of bulls**t! They wanted to invade Iraq for the oil. DO THEY think we are stupid? Maybe since we elected Bush twice they do. BUT, we are on to them and their rampant lies.

Unless comments of Rove are recorded in a state penitentiary why are we publishing recording or spreading them among decent women children and men? Really I mean have we no self respect? Isn't manure always manure?

NO RAQ WAR NO PRESIDENT OBAMA.

If you lefties believe that the historic election of Barack Obama will be a good or great thing for America and the world then expalin to me how this could have happened without the Iraq War? It was Obama's oppostion to the war that gave him the edge over Hillary in the primaries.

No President Bush, no war against Saddam Hussein; no war against Saddam, no President elect Barack Hussein Obama. It's that simple.

What's your point? It has no relevance the discussion of the current administration's behavior, it's just more hate spewing.

"expalin to me how this could have happened without the Iraq War?"

Freudian slip "expalin" ???

Anyway, Iraq war or not, GW Bush is so incompetent that Barack would have been elected anyway. America is sick of the NeoCons and the GOP.

Not true. If there were no Iraq War Obama would never have bested Hillary in the primaries.

I agree. That is the one thing that Bush did that is positive. He was such a bad President that all of the people that couldn't see Barack's outstanding qualifications because of his skin color or his name were able to look past that and ignore the right wing hate attacks and give this man a chance to put our country onto a better path. Things were so bad under Bush that the usual tendency of fear in our voting patterns was turned into demanding a brighter future. For this I say, Thanks President Bush!

So, I should be thankful Bush and his administration and the entire mainstream media lied and concocted stories of an imminent threat of "mushroom cloud"s and lethal crop dusters over America? Explain THAT to me. The election is over and WE the people have spoken. If you supported Bush, you supported everything he did. If you are "Country First", why aren't you supporting the President Elect and giving him a fair chance? BTW the middle name thing didn't work, none buys it but bitter angry people like you, whose candidate LOST.

Actually the underlying equation for the unprecedented election of Obama is as follows: 9/11+George Bush+Saddam's intransigence, lies and strategic blunders=Operation Iraqi Freedom. Remember, Saddam intentionally deceived the world about having WMD which wasn't hard to do given the fact that he had stockpiled such weapons and used them against Iran and the Kurds. If Saddam had taken the path of Khaddafi and fully cooperated with the UN instead of playing a game of strategic ambiguity-I have WMDs, I have them not-there wouldn't have been an Iraq War and he would still be in power. 9/11, Bush, Saddam=President Elect Barack Obama by the mysterious hand of Providence. Am I bitter that Obama will be our 44th President? What purpose would it serve to be bitter at God?

There's an awful lot of fine-tuning in your analysis of causation on the grand stage of history.

In your logic, probably president Lincoln was not great, because he depended on the slave-owners to provide him with an opportunity he could never have created all by himself.

Well, fortunately enough, politics and leadership is not about being great. It is about avoiding flaws in policies and administrative decisions that stink.

Repeat of my response to fried2styles below, sorry, but I don't want it to be buried.

I agree, but blame one more - me. I knew what Bush meant, what those dirtbags were up to, for a long time, and I did nothing, really, but vote for Gore and Kerry. This time, I gave money, worked the phone banks for the Dems since May, and went door to door on Election Day. If it's close next time I'll do more. May I encourage anyone else who wants to indulge in the blame game to look in the mirror as I did, and take their commitment to democracy and their patriotism beyond the voting booth and spouting off on blogs? GET INVOLVED, PEOPLE. YES WE CAN!

Interesting, Mr. Rove's comment is his version of the truth.

Isn't there proof that the administration made up the WMD's, to incite a war in Iraq? Something about national security at stake because Iraq could use the WMD's against us?

The world knew there were no wmds. Seven yrs of inspectors said it, but they needed a big war to steal all they could and the american people, at least the 45% with low iq's believed them and voted for them again.

I really don't feel too bad for the people, because they did it to themselves.

Of course he's lying.

But this is mistaking the forest for the trees: Blame the American media for rolling over for YEARS on this story, never doing even the most rudimentary journalism. Blame the tens of millions of idiots in this country that re-elected Bush in 2004 after the lie was finally made public (and who STILL beleive Bush's lies!).

The crime is not that Rove is engaging in historical revisionism, but that he's still getting away with it.
