Al Franken's campaign announced on Wednesday that, for the first time since the Minnesota recount began, the Democrat has actually pulled ahead of Republican Sen. Norm Coleman.

Speaking on a conference call with reporters, Franken's chief counsel Marc Elias said the campaign's own internal count showed them up 22 votes, a jump from the 13 vote deficit that they faced on Tuesday.

"We have approximately 138,000 ballots left to count," said Elias. "94.3 percent of the state has now been counted... Obviously that number is going to change, but we are pleased thus far with how things are going."

If true (the official state and newspaper numbers show a margin more favorable to Coleman, owing to the many challenges each campaign has logged), the tally underscores just how incredibly close the Minnesota race has become. On Wednesday, the state will go over ballots from Wright County -- a largely Republican area that could thrust Norm Coleman back into the lead.

Indeed, observers of the recount process and even members of both campaigns are bracing themselves for the near certainty that the courts will become involved. Among those aspects of the recount that have been or seemed destined to be legally debated: rejected absentee ballots (of which the Franken campaign says there are some 1,000 that should be counted), missing ballots (171 of which emerged in Ramsey County on Tuesday), and the pool of ballots that the campaigns have contested.

The last group has been building up into the thousands, as both candidates have filed both legitimate and frivolous objections. On the Wednesday conference call, however, Elias said that the Franken campaign would withdraw roughly 600 of their challenges.

UPDATE: Talking Points Memo's Eric Kleefeld explains why the withdrawn 600 challenges could be significant... from a PR perspective.

It's very obvious how it will end up - Franken ahead, and because of evidences like this:
http://www.electionjournal.org/2008/12/02/stuffed-ballot-box-in-minnesota-exclusive-photos/

There are other links along these lines - in all cases, the flow has been to Franken. It is far too important for the DNC to have this seat in the senate to allow this recount to go any other way. As a resident of MN, I'm resigned to the fact that our election process has now sunk as low as any third world country.

Are you going to run around up here stomping your widdle feet and shouting "Al Franken is a Joke" for much longer? It's getting tedious.

It now appears as though 62% of Franken's challenges occur in precincts he is currently winning. Coleman's percentage slipped from 50.8% to 49.4% with the inclusion of the newly posted data.

Franken's "lead" assumes that ALL of his challenges will go his way....

Coining the phrase 'i'm good enough, i'm smart enough and...gosh darnit(...) did not have to come from any other source than Minnesota's Voters For Change who refuse to let pettiness prevail.

Humble and committed to change, Al's wisdom is there and should prevail over the state that gave 'The Body' a voice. Something 'Too Close' is allowed to be in part, because ones that are not 'Close Enough' are blinded by things that haven't 'Changed'. And that he is the definition of, indeed.

I have to admit I'm not big fan of Al Frankin. But I would rather have anything in office rather than a born again artifically white cap teeth republician. Coleman is just so sleeezy!

Oh Minnesota, your cold weather and frozen lakes are nothing compared to the colorful cast of characters your state so comically provides:

I am astonished that Al Franken did not win in Minnesota with a comfortable margin against a lackluster candidate, and given the huge number of newly registered Democrats in an already Democratic state (the only state which in '84 voted for Mondale over Reagan). Too, this was formerly the seat of the brave and good Senator Paul Wellstone, who was heading for a landslide victory before his plane crashed just 11 days before the 2002 election. I have heard it said that Franken, who was a friend of Wellstone, ran an ascerbic, combative campaign with little mention of Wellstone's progressive accomplishments. In sum: a campaign that alienated Wellstone supporters who either didn't vote in the senate race or cast their ballot for a third party candidate.

The only explanation comes from Philip Adams, who has written that sustained celebrity has, as an inevitable consequence, permanent brain damage, marked by grandiose & egotistical behavior.

Are you somebody's stooge? You don't know anything about the race.

Franken ran a respectable, if somewhat lackluster campaign. He should have been funnier and edgier, imo. No, what killed Franken was not getting the backing of the Democratic Party of Minnesota, particular the women in charge, particularly Betty McCollum, the popular US Representative from St. Paul. She questioned Franken's integrity because she found some of his comedic writings sexist, etc. The average person up here is far from hip, and so instead of getting Franken's intelligence and hardworking honesty, they likely get more Norm Coleman.

Don't play dumb. Franken's a good man and you most likely are not.

"Most likely" I am not a good man. Such Rovian, ad hominem attacks are not surprising. And I rest my case.

Paul Wellstone had that rare ability to disagree without being disagreeable, a lost art.

Received this at noon CST today - I live in Edina MN -- Campaign mailing claims they are ahead by 10 votes. It ain't over till it's over....

Dear Friend,

I wanted to share the latest news on the recount here in Minnesota: Our latest internal report has Al Franken leading Norm Coleman by 10 votes with some 56,000 ballots left to be included in the hand count.

Key words: "internal report" Neither Franken's or Coleman's "internal reporting" is worth spit. If they substituted, "wishful thinking" for "internal report," it would be much more accurate.

Dear Minnesota,

All that cold weather and ice fishing must have rotted your brain. Thank you for six more years of Norm Coleman.

In Al's world he's always ahead. Unfortunately he's not the final word on this.
