All part of George Bush's "service" economy.

Formerly referred to as feudalism.

I have been unemployed since May. Every job interview goes one of two ways:

1-Wow, you have a PhD, why are you applying for this entry level job?
I can only assume that "because I need to eat and pay bills" is not what the interviewer wants to hear.

2-Wow, you have PhD, why don't you have the experience for this job?
A tad difficult to have 7-10 years of experience on top of a PhD, unless of course you are 50 years old. And how can you get experience without the job and how can you get a job without experience?

I thought America was suppose to add those temporary holiday jobs this time of year?

If nobody's shopping...no need to hire those temporary, seasonal employees.

You should be glad that you are under 50 years old. Eventually things will turn around and your PhD will serve you well. Older people who have been laid off are in a much worse situation since "ageism" is running rampant in this country - and this was true even before the economic collapse. And all of the hoopla about companies wanting to hire older workers is a bunch of bunk. Everyone is frustrated and depressed.

I will be 52 in a few weeks...you are right, sadly enough...

Temp agencies don't want us...I don't know why...no one wants us.

Maybe I should fly to Manila...because that's where my job went?

I don't have a PhD, just a bachelors but then again, the "Bush Patrol" has been letting in quite a number of PhD's from overseas:(

The utterly ridiculous thing about all this is ... there is huge opportunity here for any "real" industry that wants to return. But it's going to take a few critical changes in our thinking ... or I should say, returns to the ways that we used to think:

(1) "It's a leprechaun, nothing more." You cannot invent $4 trillion at the stroke of your pen, and use that "money" to bail yourself out of anything.

(2) The core problem is that you allowed your industry, and the hundreds of satellite industries that necessarily support them, to go "off shore" in quest of "a lower price." Trouble is, without the circulation and re-circulation of wages (that you took for granted when you also took for granted that a U.S. Dollar equaled 1/32 of an ounce of gold), you don't have anything to buy them with.

(3) "We Can Do It!" Ourselves, thank you very much. I happen to know where to find a nation of 305 million people, in a land criss-crossed with dormant factories and railroad lines, brimming with raw materials, and accustomed to "living well." What would your costs and profit look like if supplies were a few hundred miles away (not ten thousand), and your customers were rich enough to pay with "as good as gold" (again)?

Duh.

This is just the beginning. By March, we'll be counting job losses in the millions.

Count me among those who lost their jobs. Yesterday was my day.

I'm still working, but it seems that every single day I'm told that the work might not be there tomorrow. It is very frustrating.
