Obama

The Obama team's decision to drop the idea of forcing oil and natural gas companies to pay a tax on their windfall profits has caused a firestorm among liberals and small business coalitions.

As first reported in the Houston Chronicle, Obama's reference to a windfall profits tax, which he articulated during the campaign at a time of skyrocketing gas prices, had been removed from the transition team's Website, change.gov:

President-elect Barack Obama has quietly shelved a proposal to slap oil and natural gas companies with a new windfall profits tax.

An aide for the transition team acknowledged the policy shift Tuesday, after a small-business group discovered the proposal -- touted throughout much of the campaign -- had been dropped from the incoming administration's Web site.

"President-elect Obama announced the policy during the campaign because oil prices were above $80 per barrel," the aide said. "They are below that now and expected to stay below that."

At liberal blog Campaign For America's Future, David Sirota writes:

Between this move and the move to wait to repeal the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, it seems like the Obama team is buying into the right-wing frame that raising any taxes - even those on the richest citizens and wealthiest corporations - is bad for the economy. Of course, that frame is debunked by history. And while sure, it's OK to rack up deficits so as to spend our way out of the economic crisis, it's sorta silly to ignore the tax moves that could be implemented to limit those deficits where possible.

Oh, and one last thing - if oil prices are down and oil industry profits are truly down, what's the harm in passing a windfall profits tax? Even if you buy the right-wing nonsense about a windfall profits tax "hurting the industry" or "hurting the economy" when it is applied, if there really are no windfall profits to tax, then it won't be applied.

On Mother Jones' blog, Nick Baumann wrote a post asking, "Did Barack Obama just break his first camaign promise?":

Obama talked about a windfall profits tax as early as April. As crude oil prices topped $110 a barrel, Obama promised to "put a windfall profits tax on oil companies and use it to help ... families pay their heating and cooling bills and reduce energy costs." And in August, the Democratic nominee issued a campaign ad that promised "a windfall profits tax on big oil to give families a thousand dollar rebate." The windfall profits tax was a key point of contention between President-elect Obama and McCain in June, when McCain criticized Obama for the plan, calling it "dangerous".

The removal was noticed by the American Small Business League which fumed in a press release:

The American Small Business League questions whether the sudden elimination of this issue is a further indication that large corporations are already demonstrating their ability to influence the Obama adminstration...

President-elect Obama owes the American people an explanation as to why these campaign promises have been pulled from his agenda.

The Obama team's decision to drop the idea of forcing oil and natural gas companies to pay a tax on their windfall profits has caused a firestorm among liberals and small business coalitions. As firs...

why not give obama credit for the drop in oil price? just maybe that's why the price came down below $80/barrel! and just maybe he'll resume the profits tax if they try to jack the price of oil up again. he got credit for the market rise as a result of his wise choices in the treasury department. why not support him, it's in our best interest to do so?

Here is how bad big oil is.

Anyone out there with a HS education, good back and work ethic, drug free body and a can do attitude can geta job with Big Oil, get trained and at a starting position, with overtimem make 60,000-90,000 a year. Plus full benefits. No union and no BS but steady work, good pay and a loyal employer for a loyal employee.

What is in your wallet????

if your friends had been really interested in job security, fair pay and good working conditions, they would have joined up under the umbrella of the united steel workers union, which is who protects most of those who do work in the oil fields. or perhaps they were intimidated out of it by the generosity of their underpaying employers.

The oil companies profits are through the ROOF right now & they deserve to be taxed as windfall profits.... but President-Elect Obama is CORRECT to wait for a while, & this is why....

If the oil companies are hit NOW with this tax, they'll use that as an excuse to jack up the PRICES NOW... this WINTER.... which will INDEED have an affect at the pump... but the central concern is NOT gasoline... it's HEATING OIL.

This winter is predicted to be a particularly NASTY one & with the general economy where it is, there are low income people.... elderly, the poor that would most likely D.I.E. if they were unable to afford it.

collusion with regards to price fixing within the industry, something strictly prohibited by law, has already been proven to be happening, and has been systematically ignored by this administration.

I won't hold my breath. But I'm still waiting for Obama to actually DO something that he promised, not just talk about it. Still waiting to see if hope will be able to turn into trust. Again, not holding my breath there, either.

If he performs his presidency like he did as senator and state senator here (I live in Illinois) then what we'll have is alot of great talk and very little performance.

You should probably consider holding off on the breath-holding until he actually takes the oath of office - that's not until January 20th.

His flip-flops and broken promises, thus far, have been good for the country. If he keeps it up, I may vote for him in 2012.

I wonder how much of them really were broken promises from the start. Many of these so called promises of change were nothing more than a pipe dream to win an election. They worked.

Having said that, he is my president come Jan 20th and I hope he continues in this trend. I WANT him to be successful.

And I agree, I want him to succeed. It doesn't help me if he fails.

He promised to hire no lobbyists. Broken

He said troops out in 16 months. Now says will defer to advisors and biggest advsor is Gates who is in favor of surge and staying. Broken.

He promised new faces and ideas in his admin. Yet its all Clinton and Washington insiders. Broken.

Give credit where credit is due. PE Obama's transition to power is well manage. Indeed, EXPERIENCE aside, he came PREPARED to appoint his Cabinet. I also praise him for reconciliations, effectively appoints the best qualified and reaching out to those who opposed him during the campaign. A+.

By the same token, "TRYING TO FULLFILL ALL THAT HE PROMISED", or at least he intend to try IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Taxing windfall profits was a major contention between Obama and McCain. Having been elected, he cannot and should not back track on that promise. Oil price reduction is a RUSE. To expect this artificial pricing will last is a sign of INEXPERIENCE. Lest he forgets, the oil companies have looted our pockets for the longest time and will continue to do so. Will he sqaussed the Royalties too ? The price per barrel picked at $110, the Royalty Act demands royalties back to the government when the price go up over $34. Did he not promised that he will fund our infrastructure and green initiatives ? He should be demanding reimbursements from the Oil companies. That he suddenly change his mind, and reward these Oil barons IMO, is criminal.

BREAKING THAT PROMISE IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. How many more will he break ?

Where rewards are due, PE should be praised. Conversely, he should criticize when he wanders away from his campaign promises. It's our duty as a citizen.

What about the Oil Royalties Act. The cost per barrel has exceeded $34. It peaked at $110 last April. Where are those Royalty reimbursements ?

I was encouraged by that campaign promise. Taxing the oil companies would have provided the much needed financing of green and infrastructure repair, which in turn will create jobs.

This issue has been a major

where the Oil Companies by Clinton ? This Act was suspended Will Obama imposed the Oil Companies Are the Oil Companies will That $34/barrel cap where oil companies will reimburse the govt royalties for any gain over , for anythin

raising taxes on the people with all the money who haven't been paying their fair share will be a very good thing for the economy. it will get that money back into circulation where it belongs.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:27 AM on 12/04/2008

Beg to differ. Obama promised not to raise taxes on the middle income, but in his campaign, he denounced McCain for not reinstituting the Royalties Act, and Obama promised to make taxation more fair - that is, he promised to tax those billions of windfall profits by the Oil companies. Raising taxes on the Oil companies is a VERY GOOD.

It will certainly help to finance the infrastructure, and create good paying jobs.

Are you sure Obama didn't already know this ? You are probably wrong - didn't everybody say Obama is very intelligent man ? And I honestly believe that he is. He need not be told by his team.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:31 AM on 12/04/2008

Small potatoes ? Hundred of Billions - you consider that a nuance ? That amount will not only fund the green initatives, but also solve the infrastructure problems of this country. Our road and bridges are very dangerous.

Imagine the jobs that will be created - good paying jobs for Americans, and these jobs cannot be transported to China, Singapore or India.
