Washington Post:

Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who is in Washington this week to press his foundation's education and global health agenda, said he is keeping an open mind about taking a role aiding the incoming Obama administration.

Asked in an interview yesterday with The Washington Post whether he would consider serving in the new administration, Gates left the door open.

"Certainly my full-time job is being chairman of the foundation," Gates said. "If there was some committee or pretty focused task where I could contribute, I'd be glad to consider that, and I hope that the things we've learned about education -- including the mistakes we've made -- I hope we do get a strong dialogue and I'm very optimistic we'll have that with these people."

is bill gates smart,,,,,,,,depends how you define smart. being one of the top 5 richest men in the world, yeah i'd say he is pretty smart. is he ethical,,,,,,,,not for me to decide. does he know more about education than the ave. teacher, most definitely. he sees the entire picture, he is a visionary, a forward thinker. would i want him as an adivsor to obama, definitely. doesn't mean you have to agree with him, but getting all points of view is something obama wants to do. bring him on board. p.s. please don't let him buy ford stock until i get in first.

Karl Rove also is a visionary who tends to see the big picture - let's get him too!

Especially if we get our hands on MSDOS from the actual programmer for pennies on the dollar (by hiding the existence of a contract with IBM).

You know what the difference is between God and Bill Gates?

God doesn't think he's Bill Gates ...

He could help out the US by donating Vista to Iran. On second thought, that would just make them hate us all the more.

Hmmm. Is Bill putting out feelers for that CTO job Obama speaks of? If he wants to create this position he should eliminate the labor secretary post and re-merge it with commerce.

Wrong. What he wanted was endentured servitude, labor without any ability to negotiate in a free market. Exactly the kind of upper class twit that got America into the mess it's in. NO GATES!

Maybe - but his safe is filled with money he got from all of us by violating anti-trust laws for over a decade. Microsoft was well on its way to being broken up in 1999 and 2000 when the bush administration charged in and cut the budget for the Justice Dept. to pursue the case that they and 13 state's attorneys general had waged on behalf of consumers - which let them off the hook here. Of course, the EU had much of the same evidence and ultimately convicted microsoft a few years ago, fining them heavily.

Some of us don't forget that sort of crap, so please pardon our noise while you glue your knees to the floor in front of your idol.

Microsoft is a monopoly . There are better, more innovative products out there, but its hard to compete with a monopoly. I don't want Bill Gates anywhere near President Obama.

Yes indeedie, but of course, he has 1000 times more money than all of us here too. I guess the only question would be, how did he end up having 1000 times more money than all of us. Hard work? Luck? Opportunism? Lobbying? Reliable product? Hmmmm, endless questions.

Gates vesrion of trickle down economics..Give me all the money and I'll trickle down what I deem necessary for you to purchase a copy of microsoft..

Sort of like, I'll empoverish a whole segment of the world's population to get rich, then I'll dole out charity to those poor people that I want to help. Nice.

I was worried when I read this article's headline, but mollified after reading Gates' response. However, we all suffer from this one American Myth: the richest are the smartest.

I won't smear Bill Gates, but does he really know education as well as a public school teacher in this country?
