DALLAS — President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush have bought a home among business leaders and prominent Republican donors in an affluent North Dallas neighborhood, where they will live after the president leaves office in January.

Laura Bush's press secretary, Sally McDonough, said Thursday that the Bushes purchased a home in the Preston Hollow area, where some of the state's wealthiest residents live in some of its most expensive houses.

"We picked out a house, but we don't have occupancy of it. So as soon as we do, we'll announce exactly where it is," Mrs. Bush told NBC News on Thursday. "We're looking forward to that."

While the White House has declined to disclose the address, local property records indicate that Robert McCleskey, a Bush family friend from Midland who has done accounting work for the family, recently bought an 8,500-square-foot house with a market value of $2.1 million on a cul-de-sac with about a half-dozen homes.

McCleskey is listed as a trustee on the ranch-style brick house on Daria Place, and he said the house was bought Oct. 1. He said he could not say for whom the home was purchased.

Property records list other homeowners in the neighborhood as Tom Hicks, owner of the Texas Rangers who has a $32.3 million mansion adjacent to the cul-de-sac, billionaire T. Boone Pickens and Republican donor Harold Simmons.

"If he moves next door, we'd love it," Hicks said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. "The secret service would make the neighborhood safer!"

The president is buying his post-White House home at a time of falling real estate prices and lowered mortgage interest rates.

A parade of reporters, TV news trucks and curious onlookers drove past the home on Thursday. A gate at the top of the driveway affords some privacy to the four-bedroom house, which was built in 1959 and has a wide front yard and dark shutters. The home also has four and a half bathrooms, a wet bar and a fireplace.

Property records indicate the gable-roofed home is in very good condition. The total estimated taxes on the property for 2008 are listed at $43,984.

A woman identifying herself as the home's owner confronted photographers and asked them to stop taking pictures of the house. She refused to give her name.

Dallas County records show that the house was previously owned by Daniel Boeckman, a Dallas investor, and his wife, Laura. Daniel Boeckman did not immediately return a phone call Thursday.

Christine Tomasides, a mother of two and corporate contract writer who lives a half-block from the home, said she knew something was up about a month ago when black SUVs began rolling into the neighborhood. Secret Service agents often use such vehicles.

"It all makes sense now," Tomasides said.

She described the neighborhood as peaceful, quiet and a place where people stay out of each other's business. She said she'd never seen as much traffic as there was on the street Thursday. Tomasides welcomed her new neighbors _ and the heightened security they'll bring.

"Laura Bush seems like such a fine person, and I can't imagine anyone not wanting her as a neighbor," Tomasides said. "And him, too, regardless of your political affiliation."

The Bushes previously lived in Dallas from December 1988 through January 1995, before moving to the Texas governor's mansion in Austin. The Bushes will continue to spend time at their ranch in Crawford, McDonough said.

Dear lord,

I hope it is across the street from Homer Simpson!
It's not like W has ever learned from his father's mistakes.

Dont look for Bush to use his time helping others with charity work.

1. Get eletected President
2. Start war
3. Approve record amounts of military spending to defense contractors
4. Own shares in those defense contractors, thereby enriching the Bush family
5. Retire Rich
6. Mission Accomplished

It was the plan all along to push the economy down the drain so he could get a nice house cheap when he left office.

Now where are all the outraged comments from the tin-foil hat wearing right wingers harping on about President Bush and First Lady Laura spending millions of dollars on a house in these harsh economic times?

Hmmm, I thought so...quiet as church mice.

And you can bet good money that we won't hear so much as a peep from Rush, Hannity, Palin or Joe the Plumber, for that matter, talking about how out of touch the Bush's are with 'real' Americans as they move into their 'elite' new home?

When, if ever, have the Bushes been seen as average Americans?
Bush, money and wealth...it goes with the territory...you didn't expect them to go down to New Orleans and stay in a FEMA trailer, did you? I mean, what are you thinking?

What do you mean?
Bush was on vacation the whole 8 years in office.
I think we should pay for George Bush's retirement with a lifelong stay at any Federal Prison!

Correction, he did something that one day so 8 years minus those couple days he made addresses and then that one or two disasterous things where he made an appearance. So you're at least off by like 5 to 7 days.

If I lived in Preson Hollow, I'd sell my house and move. (or stay and throw eggs at their house every single day). :)

Nice area, if you can afford it...I agree, I hope your property values don't go down. But look at it this way -- Dubya will get Mitch Rasansky and only 10 years of Secret Service protection (thanks to a federal law change in 1997, he'll be the first president NOT to get lifetime Secret Service protection). Give it time...by 2019, you'll see him & Laura at Tom Thumb shopping sans entourage ;-)

There is something not right that he is buying a large expensive house, while he has left the nation in recession (almost depression) conditions.

There is no place awful enough for that man to live. He has utterly ruined this country and now he just walks off stage with his millions and rubs it in our face like this. He has no conscious whatsoever to have done, and worse, continues to do so much harm with absolutely no compassion for the citizens he was entrusted to protect.
