SAN FRANCISCO — Voters' economic status and religious convictions played a greater role than race and age in determining whether they supported the Nov. 4 ballot measure outlawing same-sex marriage in California, a new poll shows.

The ban drew its strongest support from both evangelical Christians and voters who didn't attend college, according to results released Wednesday by the Public Policy Institute of California.

Age and race, meanwhile, were not as strong factors as assumed. According to the poll, 56 percent of voters over age 55 and 57 percent of nonwhite voters cast a yes ballot for the gay marriage ban.

People who identified themselves as practicing Christians were highly likely to support the constitutional amendment, with 85 percent of evangelical Christians, 66 percent of Protestants and 60 percent of Roman Catholics favoring it.

The poll also showed that the measure got strong backing from voters who did not attend college (69 percent), voters who earned less than $40,000 a year (63 percent) and Latinos (61 percent).

The proposition, which passed with 52 percent of the vote, overturned the state Supreme Court's May decision legalizing gay marriage in California. The measure inserts language into the constitution limiting marriage to one man and one woman.

The poll found that, overall, 48 percent of voters oppose the idea of making gay marriage legal. Forty-seven percent support it, while 5 percent are undecided.

The results mirror previous PPIC polls from the last three years, suggesting that the $73 million spent for and against the measure did not do much to change public attitudes on allowing gay couples to wed, said survey director Mark Baldassare.

"At no point in time, before or after the election, did we have a majority of Californians saying they supported gay marriage," Baldassare said. "My takeaway from this is that until there is a major shift in public opinion one way or another, it's going to be another issue where voters are deeply divided."

Geoffrey Kors, executive director of the gay rights group Equality California, said the PPIC poll demonstrates that same-sex marriage advocates "need to make inroads in every category. If 2 percent of voters had voted differently, we would have had a different result," he said.

The poll was based on a phone survey of 2,003 California voters in the Nov. 4 election who were interviewed from Nov. 5-6. The sampling error was plus or minus 2 percentage points.

If I had voted in California, I would have probably voted yes on Prop 8 also because unless you are really into politics the way it is written it sounds like you are voting for and not against gay marriage. I bet many people that voted did not know they were voting against gay marriage. The polling booth can be confusing and tricky. I say they should re-vote and put the measure in laymans terms--For Gay Marriage vs Against gay marriage.

Ballot initiative are almost always worded to be nearly incomprehensible. That's because private interests get them on the ballot and are in charge of the wording. It's often in the best interests of those who want it passed to make it confusing, so they do.

How is this headline news? We already knew it was Latino Catholics and A.A. evangelical Christians and flowers-in-the-attic Mormons.

I think the point was to counter all of that blame the Blacks and Latinos nonsense. The vote never was about race, but some refused to see that.

Your right. 1)rights should not be up for vote. 2) No on prop 8 had a horrible ground game and didn't really reach out to minority populations.

Duh! The whole 'Blacks and Hispanics did it' is a silly way to divide a new coalition that is about to make big changes.

And yet Barack has yet to make a statement... You would think with his twice daily press conferences he would have gotten some chance ... But then again he has not weighed in on much of anything of substance ( that was also true in 7 years in Illinois ) .. Nothing on the bailout, Nothing on George Ryan , nothing on Prop 8 , nothing on Iraq , he did say no to windfall gas taxes though......Then again have not heard any heavy Democrat hitters speak out ....And what about the fact THAT WOMEN MORE THAN MEN?

That's not surprising really. Religion has helped a lot of bigotry over the years.

But only girlie/man love--not girlie man/girlie man love or girlie/girlie love.

Apparently, his love comes with a few restrictions.

Why doesn't the headline mention age. One popular response to the argument that race was a factor is to say, "No, age is." There has been a tendency all along to criticize old people, as if old people are a group that it's okay to target. If this new poll debunks the idea that race alone is a factor, it also debunks the idea that age alone is a factor. Now, how much the black churches play a role in the African-American community to marginalize glbtq people is an issue that still needs to be responded to.

My wife and I walked out of the Black church we belonged to when the preacher started on his "Adam and Steve" tirade and have never gone back. The religious community, regardless of race, has been hostile to gays for quite awhile.

Fortunately, there are gay-friendly churches, and a great many, when faced with what they have allowed to have happen to somone's rights, are seeing the hypocrisy in the California vote. Even my wife, who up to Nov. 4 didn't get the issue, understands that no matter what you may think of another's lifestyle, you should not be involved in stripping anyone of their humanity.

Gay marriage is inevitable. We have to keep pushing.

Please avoid using "lifestyle" when you mean "orientation." A style is chosen. The religious nuts use "chosen lifestyle" to muddy the issue. Thanks.

But I thought it was the black people's fault according to the media and some gays.

They really drove that crap hard didn't they? The media loved the story for it's sensationalism and some white gays craved it like catnip because some people will take any venue they can to express their racism in socially acceptable ways. For some people this is better than dogging on black athletes.
