WASHINGTON — President George W. Bush publicly acknowledged for the first time Friday that the U.S. economy is in a recession and worried aloud that Detroit's Big Three automakers may not all survive their mounting troubles.

Four days after the long-suspected existence of a recession was made official, Bush used the word himself.

"Our economy is in a recession," Bush said flatly, speaking to reporters on the South Lawn only hours after the release of a government report showing the biggest month of job losses in 34 years. "This is in large part because of severe problems in our housing, credit and financial markets, which have resulted in significant job losses."

While repeatedly listing the serious problems in the economy, the White House has refused to embrace the actual term until Monday, when a panel for the National Bureau of Economic Research said the recession began last December and is ongoing.

With automakers, particularly General Motors, in fear of bankruptcy, they are seeking from Washington a huge cash infusion of up to $34 billion, beyond an existing $25 billion loan program. Lawmakers are considering the idea, but there is uncertainty about the level of support on Capitol Hill for that plan.

Bush displayed skepticism about the wisdom of new aid to companies that still need to make "hard choices on all aspects of their business." So while urging lawmakers to act next week to help the battered industry, Bush urged a Congress controlled by opposition Democrats to follow his approach.

The president supports adjusting the $25 billion loan program, so that the money would be available more quickly and for more urgent needs than its original long-term purpose of helping to retool factories to produce more energy-efficient cars.

"I am concerned about the viability of the automobile companies," he told reporters on the South Lawn. "I am concerned about those who work for the automobile companies and their families. And likewise, I am concerned about taxpayer money being provided to these companies that may not survive."

With only 46 days left in office before President-elect Barack Obama takes over, Bush declared: "It's important to make sure that taxpayers' money be paid back if any is given to the companies."

The president spoke not long after the release of a government report showing the biggest month of job losses in 34 years. Reacting to the jobs report for November, which also showed a huge jump in the unemployment rate to 6.7 percent, Bush expressed deep concern for Americans who have lost jobs, but also said there are some encouraging signs about the credit markets. "There is still more work to do," he said. "My administration is committed to ensuring that our economy succeeds."

At 12 months, the current recession is already the longest since a severe 16-month slump in 1981-82. Many economists say this downturn will ultimately set a new record for the post-World War II period.

During Bush's eight years in office, the United States has fallen into two recessions. The first one started in March 2001 and ended in November of that year.

He and Laura, are like Tom and Daisy in the Great Gatsby: "They were careless people—they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made..."

I wish Pelosi had at least initiated the impeachment process. Even if there weren't enough votes to get Bush impeached, at least the dems would have thrown a punch. And it would be on Bush's already horrible record that this was done. However, although he might be skipping off to his new Dallas mansion and leaving ruins in his wake worldwide, karma will get him. The wheels of justice, as they say, turn slowly. But they do turn.

BULLETIN: BUSH ANNOUNCES "FINALLY LOCATED ASS, WMD"
AP-
Braving a wintry chill, the president skipped merrily into the White House Rose Garden and proudly proclaimed that after much intensive study and using both hands, he had finally discovered his own posterior.
"An' look! I found at least one other WMD!" he bragged, and used both index fingers to point to his ears. Karl Rove, huddling behind a compost heap, giggled like a four-year-old and yelled out "SEE? He's NOT the worst!"
The president yelled "Merry Taxas", was sedated and is resting comfortably at Bethesda Naval Hospital.

About the auto industry bridge loans, he says he is "concerned" about giving money to companies that might not survive, but about the Paulson-demanded bailouts of world banksters, his first statement was that he's by default a "free market guy" but bailing out AIG, Citi, and anybody else whose business is NOT in the production of any kind of durable good, was absolutely necessary. Two problems:

(1) A real "free market guy" -- one who had done his own Econ 101 homework -- would understand that the value of any investor class is that is succeeds or fail with their investments
(2) Paulson's rationale for the importance of his bailout was the potential inability of large employers to meet payrolls, because they depend so much on credit.

The latter is *exactly* the problem that has brought GM, Ford and Chrysler to Congress for emergency financial relief.

Their decades-long track record of large, fuel-guzzling vehicles was already being addressed. The outrage toward the automobile manufacturers is well-placed but long overdue, and the near-ubiquitous scapegoating of their laborers is just completely idiotic. The major advantage that foreign automakers have is not the average wage or salary of their line worker, it's that their countries provide national health care. The wage gap is negligible, and has more to do with our Congress' failure to set our import tariffs to match the import tariffs imposed on us.

American companies, in a perfect world, wouldn't need to take out a loan just to make payroll. That type of nonsense doesn't go on in Europe. Any multi-billion dollar company worth it's salt should have enough cash on hand from profits to pay salaries and expenses. The only time a line of credit should come into play is when it's time to retool or expand, something like that. But if you need to take out a loan every month to pay off your employees, while your upper echelon is making 99 million dollars a year, something is seriously wrong with your business model. My cousin "invested" in 4 apartment buildings in Connecticut, and has plenty of tenants...but is still always broke...after doing it for years. I keep asking her.."what's the point?". So big 3...you're making billions per year, but can't even make your monthly expenses without "bridge" loans...so what's the point of you being in business? Maybe we should let them go under, and start from scratch...

Not so slow and out of touch, Bush owns a lot of stock in MANY credit card companies. He ends up lining his pockets with the walkin' around people's money anyway.
So, maybe not so slow.

And did you know the elder Bushes own stock in Keefe and Unicor, the publicly traded business end of the US Federal Prison System? Look it up...Unicor makes all the prison furniture and Gov't office furniture used in most US Gov offices, as well as maintains it's own trucking company, and retrieves gold and other precious metals from used cell phones. Oh, and also makes parts for planes and weapons. How convenient, huh? I am extremely hopeful that President Obama will address the Gulag system we have implemented in America, where so many people have criminal records now that we can barely find anyone qualified to be a Cop or a Correctional Officer. The last 24 years has been one slippery orgy of circular greed and immense immoral profits by Big Bush/Clinton/Lil Bush, et al, and it may be so ingrained in America's heirarchy that even Obama can't eradicate it.

Whow, so President Bush finally realizes we're in a recession. Isn't this the same man that didn't realize gas was at $4 a gallon months ago. This man has failed at so many things. His baseball team, his oil company, his presidency and the American people. This is what happen when voters have no respect for intelligence.

Listen, this economy has been in trouble for 8 years. Yes, 8 F'n years. If it wasn't for the home mortgage scam, that the Fed let run amok, that screwed millions of honest well meaning Americans, it would have appeared it's ugly head long ago. Oh! And our dear president has for the first time acknowledged "we are in a recession!" I am sure he got that bulletin from god too. That is god with a small "g." Not my God!!! I don't know who he's been listening to!

The worst part is this sorry excuse knew the economy was in trouble months ago and did nothing other then to say everything is fine go out and shop. Rather than get the best people working on a fix before the whole thing imploded he decided to do nothing, much like on 9/11, or during Katrina. See you neo cons it matters a lot who you elect. When you elect morons you end up with moronic things happening that didn't need to happen. All I can say is good job you 51 percenters, I just hope the 49 percenters do not suffer too much because of your short sightedness.

Actually, their is no magic cure that the government can provide. Doesn't matter who you elect, as soon as you realize that the government creates as many problems as they attempt to solve, you will be on your way to real knowledge.

Sadly enough, he won't feel a bit of remorse, or suffer from this in any way. He'll always have it good. He'll never be broke or feel financial hardship. This seems much like his pre-prez business record, anything he touched crashed.

It's just like the CEOs who have been running our financial institutions (auto ind, etc.) in to the ground. They'll all be fine.

The rest of us?

The rest of us who can least afford it will be paying for it. But a huge number of Americans did tolerate this culture and even celebrated it, for a very long time. I hope those who did finally get it that GREED IS NOT GOOD.

If he says that we are in a recession then we are actually in a depression. He is a slow on the uptake so when he acknowledges a fact he has previously denied then you have to magnify it by a factor of 5.
