WASHINGTON — An alarming half-million American jobs vanished virtually in a flash last month, the worst mass layoffs in over a third of a century, as economic carnage spread ever faster and the nation hurtled toward what could be the hardest hard times since the Great Depression.

Underscoring Friday's dismaying signs of a rapidly deteriorating economy, General Motors announced yet more job cuts, and a record number of homeowners were reported behind on mortgage payments or in foreclosure.

Somehow Wall Street found a silver lining, betting that so much bad news would force fresh government action to revive the foundering economy. The Dow Jones industrial rose 259 points.

Staring at 533,000 lost jobs, economists were anything but hopeful. Since the start of the recession last December, the economy has shed 1.9 million jobs, and the number of unemployed people has increased by 2.7 million _ to 10.3 million now out of work.

Some analysts predict 3 million more jobs will be lost between now and the spring of 2010 _ and that the once-humming U.S. economy could stagger backward at a shocking 6 percent rate for the current three-month quarter.

"The economy is in a free fall," said Richard Yamarone of Argus Research. "It is as if someone flicked off the switch on hiring."

"It's a mess," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Economy.com. "Businesses, battening down the hatches, are concerned about their survival and are cutting workers."

President-elect Barack Obama said the crisis "is likely to get worse before it gets better," and no one was going to argue that point. Economists predicted the unemployment rate, which rose to a 15-year high of 6.7 percent in November, could soar as high as 10 percent before skittish employers begin hiring again.

Story continues below

The jobless rate would have bolted to 7 percent for the month if not for the exodus of 422,000 people from the work force for any number of reasons _ going back to school, retiring or simply abandoning job searches out of sheer frustration. When people stop looking, they're no longer counted in the unemployment rate.

The rate was at 4.7 percent just one year ago, 6.5 percent in October.

Employment shrank in virtually every part of the economy _ factories, construction companies, financial firms, accounting and bookkeeping, architectural and engineering firms, hotels and motels, food services, retailers, temporary help, transportation, publishing, janitorial and building maintenance, and even waste management. The few fields spared included education, health care and government.

The United States _ already in recession for a year, may not be out of it until the spring of 2010 _ making for the longest downturn since the Great Depression of the 1930s, economists are now saying. Recessions in the mid-1970s and early 1980s last 16 months.

Unemployment peaked at 10.8 percent in 1982, terrible but still a far cry from the Depression, when roughly one in four Americans were out of work.

That said, more pain is certainly in store. Fresh evidence:

_ A record one in 10 American homeowners with a mortgage was either at least a month behind on payments or in foreclosure at the end of September, the Mortgage Bankers Association reported.

_ General Motors, already pleading with Congress for billions of dollars to survive the month, said it would lay off an additional 2,000 workers as it cuts shifts at three car factories starting in February due to slowing demand for GM cars.

President George W. Bush, who used the word "recession" for the first time to describe the economy's state, pledged Friday to explore more efforts to ease housing, credit and financial stresses.

"There is still more work to do," Bush said. "My administration is committed to ensuring that our economy succeeds."

President-elect Obama said the dismal job news underscored the need for forceful action, even as he warned that the pain could not be quickly relieved.

"There are no quick or easy fixes to this crisis ... and it's likely to get worse before it gets better," Obama said. "At the same time, this ... provides us with an opportunity to transform our economy to improve the lives of ordinary people by rebuilding roads and modernizing schools for our children, investing in clean energy solutions to break our dependence on imported oil, and making an early down payment on the long-term reforms that will grow and strengthen our economy for all Americans for years to come."

On a personal level, right before Thanksgiving, Mark Pierce, 51, who was executive pastor at a church in Mansfield, Ohio, was given a choice: get laid off or take a lesser job with a roughly 40 percent pay cut. His last day of work was Tuesday.

"Anyone in that situation looks at it very personally," he said. "You say, 'Is this a cut across the board, or it just me?'"

It's not just him.

Employers are slashing costs as they cope with sagging sales in the U.S. and in other countries, which are struggling with their own economic troubles.

In recent days, AT&T Inc., DuPont, JPMorgan Chase & Co., as well as jet engine maker Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corp., and mining company Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. all have announced layoffs.

Tom Solso, chief executive of Columbus, Ind.-based manufacturer Cummins Inc., said Friday the company planned to cut 500 jobs, or about 3.5 percent of its work force despite other cost-cutting moves such as temporarily shutting down plants, shortening work weeks and extending holiday shutdowns.

Fighting for survival, the chiefs of Chrysler LLC, General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. returned to Capitol Hill Friday to again ask lawmakers for as much as $34 billion in emergency aid.

Workers with jobs did see modest wage gains in November. Average hourly earnings rose to $18.30, a 0.4 percent increase from the previous month. Over the year, wages have grown 3.7 percent, but paychecks haven't stretched that far because of high prices for energy, food and other items.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is now expected ratchet down a key interest rate _ near a historic low of 1 percent _ by at least a half-percentage point on Dec. 16 in a bid to breathe life into the moribund economy. Bernanke is exploring other economic revival options and wants the government to step up efforts to curb home foreclosures.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, whose department oversees the $700 billion financial bailout program, also is weighing new initiatives such as tapping the second half of that rescue money to ease the economic crisis.

Obama, who takes office on Jan. 20, has called for a massive economic recovery bill to generate 2.5 million jobs over his first two years in office. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has vowed to have a package ready on Inauguration Day for Obama's signature.

The measure, which could total $500 billion, would bankroll big public works projects to create jobs, provide aid to states to help with Medicaid costs, and provide money toward renewable energy development.

For now that's cold comfort to Gary Cope, 33, who lost his communications job this week at Roanoke, Va.-based high-tech research and development company Luna Innovations Inc.

Cope was called into a meeting first thing Thursday morning. The message: He was being laid off, for financial reasons, effective immediately.

He left with a box of his belongings and about two months' severance. As Cope walked out the door, all he could think was, "I have a 3-year-old son and I'm a single dad."

"I came home and did my initial pity party, then I got myself together, talked to my family and went right to work" rewriting his resume and sending it out, Cope said.

Well, I have to get on with my day. There is much to do if we are going to bring corporate America to its knees and b.l.u.d.g.e.o.n it into a coma from which it can never again awaken.

But hey, it's been fun stirring you folks up. Thanks for the laughs.

'Bye for now.

I am deeply worried about the economy. Fewer people have the funds to purchase goods. So whether they are made here or anywhere else, the treasury is suffering. How will we ever be able to pay our debts?

Just couple of days ago I heard a Republican commentator on NPR say that the economy was doing great just a few weeks ago but now is sinking. What is wrong with these idiots? How can anyone actually say that this just started - implying that Bush couldn't possibly have time to do anything about it?

I watched series of online videos from Red State Road Trip right after the 2004 election. The folks in the Southern states desperately needed help then, but they couldn't bring themselves to not vote for the War President. See where that got us?

In 2004 Bush had convinced the country and John Kerry we were right invading Iraq and would prevail. If George had won the war, enslaved the Iraqis and introduced 30 cent gasoline to the US, John McCain would have won the election in 2008.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again..... When are Economists' predictions EVER correct? or even close?
I cannot recall ever, there being 1 month, where they correctly predicted job losses, or gains, CPI changes, GDP changes, Inflation changes, energy price changes, market ups and downs, etc.

I have to wonder if there really are any actual economists making any predictions anywhere, and if there are just some media people who say that every month to make economists sound dumb, and make the news headlines sound more crazy!!
Like: "Economists Stunned at how wrong they were on everything...There must be something Amazing and Incredible, Never before seen, unbeleivable going on!!"

Economists use numbers GIVEN to them (if they have all of the information) and then make predictions. Considering the fact that government hid for a whole year that we've been in a recession, its quite normal that they didn't have all the facts. Btw, as a economic/international business major, I take offense at what your implications

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:01 AM on 12/05/2008

sorry for the offense, but if the shoe fits, wear it. You tell me how many predictions you have made that have been accurate within 5% on the topics listed above, that are Then announced to the public and the stock market which depends on substantive estimates with accuracy to plan ahead?

if you can beat the last 10 yrs of Every Single Month Bar None, where it was reported by the Business Media that economists were wrong on every single topic every single time, by a Wide margin, then i take my comments about Economists back.
BTW, my brother actually has a Degreen in macro economics, but it doesnt change my opinion of their ability to make useful predictions.

But in regard to an above comment, that they often dont have all the info.
Thats a given, but they still make predictions anyway and are incorrect by still wide margins every month on national economic data and trends.
When are Economists going to have ALL the pertinent data about our country's economy down to the Constant stream of Financial Fraud being committed on Wall street to make accurate predictions?
I'd like to know when.

The economists are not always wrong. Many have been saying a serious recession was coming for well over a year now, but maybe some of them were just seeing the numbers that Bush and co were working hard to keep away from the people.

While I'm not getting any satisfaction out of this (I'm hurting like a whole lot of folks).... a part of me does want this economy to collapse. Just like the Great Depression drove people to challenge their leaders and forced them to enact legislation that really put the people first... I think it's going to take something just as great... if not worse, before we will really begin to challenge ours. Right now... things aren't so bad... so we are content to just "wait and see" what happens. We need to be proactive and actually make things happen.

Its funny that people are jumping down Obamas throat already. If you look at history FDR did the same thing during the great depression. He did not get involved untill hoover was out of office. Please do a google search and educate yourselves. Once he got in we all know what happened. It is acctually the reason the inaguration day was moved up to Jan 20. It used to be march untill presidents were inagurated. Right now bush is the president and maybe for once he should do his job as well as congress. They are all a joke. I also feel if we are truly a capatilistic society we should let these companies fail. That is the nature of capatalism. If a company fails it is there fault not anyone elses and then once they are gone usually someone will step in and take there place. Maybe if these ceos werent so greedy and going after the quick money we would not be in this siuation. Same goes for the goverment.

This is why Obama must finally step up to the plate and lead. Present and non-answers aren't options for the president. "Democrats are growing impatient with President-elect Barack Obama's refusal to inject himself in the major economic crises confronting the country. Obama has sidestepped some policy questions by saying there is only one president at a time. But the dodge is wearing thin. "He's going to have to be more assertive than he's been,""

Not so, Obama should can moving today. He can publicize his economic policies, get the debate on legislation started, have the congress start writing legislation, build public support, reassure the markets and fully lay the foundations to hit the ground running on the 20th. "The Obama team has to step up," Sen. Christopher Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee and one of the lead negotiators, said Nov. 21 in Hartford, Conn. "In the minds of the people, this is the Obama administration. I don't think we can wait until January 20."

Let's see,.... 2008 - 34 years = 1974,.... Middle of another Republican-led, scandal ridden, Presidential term,... Right after a commodity-based (oil / energy) crisis hit the fan,... Right at the end of a losing War of Occupation (OK,.. so we aren't quite done in Iraq/Afghanistan yet),...

History does seem to repeat itself in a lot of ways,... now doesn't it?

Too bad we never seem to learn from History.

True, except the average American was still better off then by any number of measures. We're are entering this downturn with a already weak middle class, swamped in debt.

In the 70's there was a larger segment of the workforce unionized, and "cost of living" raises were more common during the inflationary spikes. Now there is less elasticity, the oil shocks today came as a direct hit to disposable income.

All true SCG,... many of the root causes of the 1974 vs 2008 crises are similar,... but we are most certainly less well set up to rebound from this crisis than in 1974.

It is going to be a long, cold Winter for many - and the Spring ain't going to warm things up that much for most of us.

History in that type only repeats itself not because of mistakes, but because one party the GOP, is always seeking ways to take money from consumers/taxpayers and deposit into their accounts.
They do this with War, with fraud, with banking, with living requirements such as fuel, heat, electricity, food.

The GOP always has its allies in the industries Americans depend on, so they can keep them over a barrel(of oil) literally and figuratively.

Until the GOP changes, corporate america changes, the Sheep that support them based on fraud change, our country will continue this cycle regardless of some good years in between with democrats in charge.

While I would agree that the GOP gets the lion's share of the blame for this fiasco TrooAmerican,... I would lay a sizable minority chunck (30-ish %?) of the blame firmly at the feet of the DLC-type Democrats who have benefited from these policies, and that have enabled them in near lock-step with the GOP-ers.

In a lot of ways - we really do only have one party in this country any more - the DemoRepublicrats - also known as the Corporatist party.

Someone on the Left, who is known nationally known, needs to be added to the Obama cabinet who can counterbalance those who lean to the Right. I nominate Senator John Edwards for the position of Labor Secretary. America already knows who John Edwards is, and he was the only candidate who dared speak against the moneyed interests who have taken over our government and the U.S. treasury, your tax money, which is being sent as "bail out" money directly into the pockets of the already super rich. So far, Obama has chosen, mostly, Wall Street promoters to in his cabinet. John Edwards would be a refreshing change. Is not change what Obama is supposed to be about? John Edwards is for the workers and unions, i.e. Main Street, not Wall Street.

John Edwards is, also, the only candidate for President that actually went down to New Orleans on several occasions and worked along side those striving to try to bring back the areas that remain so devastated from the effects of Hurricane Katrina.

John Edwards is a public speaker, not an administrator, so I doubt he'd be effective in that role. His trips to New Orleans BTW were a media stunt done to get more attention for his campaign.

Edwards might very well have been a valuable addition, however he couldn't keep it in his pocket. He destroyed his usefulness, at least for a while. I doubt it was worth it.

Relax - Obama put his security and economic groups in first with more centrist folks and has given the right wing absolutely NOTHING to whine about. Next up will be his picks for Education, HHR, Labor, Energy and EPA. That's where we'll start to see the real progressives taking the stage. The mantra of competence over ideology is already out there with his picks thus far and I"m sure will be carried through in the remaining cabinet posts more focused on important progressive issues.

And we can add 3 million to the grim totals unless Obama finds his "presidential voice" and forces Bush and Congress to push through a Big Three/union bailout.

Nope. The auto industry carries a ripple effect of 7. 3.1 million UAW jobs lost actually translates to an additional 20 million supplier-related jobs gone. That's 10% of America's workforce, for those of you playing at home.

At which point our government spends 25 billion more so that 3 million can wait and become unemployed next year when they still go bankrupt anyway. I have yet to hear a single idea from the big three that demonstrates that they know how to be remotely relevant in a global market where they have to compete with more efficient corporations that make better products like Toyota, Honda, VW, etc. Unless they can seriously get the UAW to back down, drastically reduce a large number of people's pension and post retirement health plan (it may be harsh, but if they go bankrupt those people will lose it entirely), lower salaries that are simply too high in the company's condition, and then unless they can prove to be capable of manufacturing a better and more desirable product, we could give them a trillion dollars and it would do nothing. They are stuck in an old, inefficient, poorly conceived, bloated model and without radical change the money would just be wasted and people will still lose their jobs. The house is on fire and you're wanting to hand them a Dixie cup full of water.

All good points except for one thing. You seemed to forget the huge salaries of these incompetent fools which also needs to take a drastic cut. Why only the UAW be forced to reduce their salaries and not the CEOs?

I'm from Texas so I might be biased here, but Chrysler has been making decent vehicles for awhile now, and are now offering lifetime powertrain warranty on nearly all new cars. They're quality products and have been for the last 3-5 years. Ford's been getting high marks for reliability (better than most foreign makers) and GM is rolling out a "new generation" of fuel efficient vehicles right now and in the near future. They've started the turn around.

It's easy to say they were making SUVs and trucks when we wanted small cars, but look at what has been selling for the last 5 years. Even the foreign makers went outside their norm to start making in-roads into trucks and SUVs.

Ford turned a profit in Q1 of 2008. Then the recession hit, which no industry was prepared for (short of Walmart maybe). And anybody that blames the unions for the auto industries current problems has a nice warm spot in hell waiting for them. They've done everything we've been bitching about with the TARP companies. I agree with appointing an oversight board BEFORE we pass legislation, but Chapter 11 = death to "Buy American".
