LAS VEGAS - A broken O.J. Simpson was sentenced Friday to as much as 33 years in prison for a hotel armed robbery after a judge rejected his apology and said, "It was much more than stupidity."

The 61-year-old football Hall of Famer stood shackled and stone-faced as Judge Jackie Glass rattled off the punishment. Moments before, Simpson made a rambling, five-minute plea for leniency, simultaneously apologizing for the holdup as a foolish mistake and trying to justify his actions.

He choked back tears as he told her: "I didn't want to steal anything from anyone. ... I'm sorry, sorry."

Simpson said he was simply trying to retrieve sports memorabilia and other mementos, including his first wife's wedding ring, from two dealers when he stormed a Las Vegas hotel room on Sept. 13, 2007.

But the judge emphasized that it was a violent confrontation in which at least one gun was drawn, and she said someone could have been shot. She said the evidence was overwhelming, with the planning, the confrontation itself and the aftermath all recorded on audio or videotape.

Glass, a no-nonsense judge known for her tough sentences, imposed such a complex series of consecutive and concurrent sentences that even many attorneys watching the case were confused as to how much time Simpson got.

Simpson could serve up to 33 years but could be eligible for parole after nine years, according to Elana Roberto, the judge's clerk.

The judge said several times that her sentence in the Las Vegas case had nothing to do with Simpson's 1995 acquittal in the slaying of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

"I'm not here to try and cause any retribution or any payback for anything else," Glass said.

Simpson was immediately led away to prison after the judge refused to permit him to go free on bail while he appeals.

Simpson's co-defendant and former golfing buddy, Clarence "C.J. Stewart, also was sentenced to at least 15 years.

Outside court, Goldman's father, Fred Goldman, and sister, Kim, said they were delighted with the sentence.

"We are thrilled, and it's a bittersweet moment," Fred Goldman said. "It was satisfying seeing him in shackles like he belongs."

The Goldmans took a measure of credit for Simpson's fate, saying their relentless pursuit of his assets to satisfy a $33.5 million wrongful-death judgment "pushed him over the edge" and led him to commit the robbery to recover some of his sports memorabilia.

Simpson and Stewart were both brought to the courtroom in dark blue jail uniforms, their hands shackled to their waists with chains. Simpson, who looked weary and had not been expected to speak, delivered a somber statement to the judge.

As he spoke in a hoarse voice, the courtroom was hushed. His two sisters, Shirley Baker and Carmelita Durio, sat in the front row of the courtroom, along with his adult daughter.

Both men were convicted Oct. 3 of 12 criminal charges, including kidnapping and armed robbery.

"As stupid and as ill-conceived as it was, it wasn't something that was from this evil mind they teach us about," Simpson attorney Yale Galanter said before sentencing.

"Not bright, not smart, not well thought out, but certainly not from an evil mind," Galanter said.

Most of the 63 seats in the courtroom were taken by media, lawyers and family members of the defendants. Fifteen members of the public were also allowed.

After sentencing was over, the Goldmans left the courtroom and Kim threw her arms around her father and wept.

Simpson's sisters declined to comment, but Shirley Baker said on her way out: "It's not over."

Jurors who heard 13 days of testimony said after the verdict that they were convinced of Simpson's guilt because of audio recordings that were secretly made of the Sept. 13, 2007, robbery at the Palace Station casino hotel.

The confrontation involved sports memorabilia brokers Alfred Beardsley and Bruce Fromong. It was recorded by collectibles dealer Thomas Riccio, who was acting as middleman.

"Don't let nobody out of this room!" Simpson commands on the recordings, and instructs other men to scoop up items he insists had been stolen from him.

On Tuesday, Glass is scheduled to sentence four former co-defendants who took plea deals and testified against Simpson and Stewart.

Michael McClinton, Charles Cashmore, Walter Alexander and Charles Ehrlich could receive probation or prison time. McClinton could get up to 11 years; the others face less.

I'm hoping he has to share a cell with Boy George for the rest of his life.

Thank you Judge Glass.

The judge said that there was more to the story. I wonder if Simpson had given the items to these "friends" so they could be liquidated in a way that would allow Simpson to hide the money and thus avoid the Goldman judgment. If his "friends" wanted to stiff him for all or most of the money, what could Simpson do about it? Call the cops? Don't think so! The "friends" aren't going to tell the whole story because they would be admitting that they conspired with Simpson to cheat the Goldman judgment and possibly the IRS. Fred Goldman said that the judgment was the cause of Simpson's predicament although he didn't elaborate. I hope the Goldman's find some measure of peace now as they did a great public service helping to cage this monster.

Given the response of most people to Simpson, do you really think the police would have helped him retrieve his items? I'm not saying this a a reason to "stick up" the people who take your stuff, but it is an explanation, and one that figure in understanding his desperate actions.

But, the decision to get OJ was made long ago. As the Goldmans said, and quite accurately, they were simply hounding him until public, collective sentiment could use a more "appropriate" and "officiacl" methods of carrying out retribution. This was a collective (white) lynching of a Black "fugitive" they thought got away with murder. It's really not all that different from post-1960s in the way it played out.

I know this will fall on deaf ears of most white readers, but for AfricanAmerican readers, the characterization should play special significance as a reminder, especially in these "post-racial" times.

He was judged by jury of his peers. found guilty and sentenced to a reasonable term.
End of story-- move on.

That was not a jury of his peers and I think the sentence was excessive. His kids should file a lawsuit on the dealer that has his merchandise.

What would be a jury of his peers?

Twelve former Heisman winners? Or perhaps twelve former USC halfbacks.

Peers means equals before the law, not total matchups.

I actually don't think the sentence was especially disproportionate.

Put aside OJ and this particular cast of characters. In California, there are periodic home invasion robberies where people come in with guns blazing, robbing homes, terrorizing the home owners. If this were the sentencing of one of those people, would I be upset with a sentence of 9-33 years? Probably not.

The act of breaking into an inhabited dwelling with deadly weapons is pretty serious on its face, regardless of whether or not you care for the victims in this case.

Almost every robbery has weapons involved. So, saying that because there were weapons is not muc of a distinction when it comes to crimes of this nature. One could reasonably expect 5 years for this type of offense and narrative of events. OJ pretty much receive the same sentence as the most brazen, violent, and well-planned armed robbers would receive, the 95th percentile of sentence length.

The Judge blew it with the complexity of the sentence.
This case will be revised on appeal.
She was grandstanding for publicity; expect a book and TV appearances.

OJ blew it when he gave such a long statement to the judge. He made many damaging admissions that will come back to bike him on appeal and at future parole hearings.

One of the greatest cosmological theories that exist is the idea of only One Soul in the universe! If that's the case, then, all that we "hate", and all that we "love" are one and the same! So where does that leave vengeance? Who does it belong?

As far as O.J. is concern, finding material, and celebratory success, is no substitute for finding oneSelf, which maybe life's only worthwhile vocation.

the saddest thing about this story and some of the people that make post on this website.. is the pure ignorance which is bliss... i think this man got a raw deal..raw deal i tell you... and i think a lot of black folks are still happy with Obama being president and it hasn't sunk in yet... the sad thing is in America its plenty of black men and white men who are O.J... more black then white.... locked up due to the media hounds and the mob mentality of the majority in this country... and we wonder why no one has pitty on our problems around the world but look how we act towards each other in this country... look how things work when so-called justice is served with a mob mentality... dude won the criminal trial 10 plus years ago.... but he got hit with a sentence like he go convicted...where is all the white liberals at to fight this battle...where is the black folks who know better... we know we are our brothers keeper no matter what the brother did.... if he has done wrong convict him and sentence him just... but if the sentence doesn't fit the norm... than we know that this is revenge.....good luck to those who laugh at or celebrate another mans downfall may the creator have mercy on your soul....

What you want was denied 13 years ago. For better or worse, he got away with a double homicide. You cannot blame people for not standing up for him. He is no example for the oppressed crowd. He is the opposite. By the way, he was charged with more than one crime. There was armed robbery and kidnapping to name a few. If he hadn't had a gun...

So you are still litigating a 13 year old murder trial where he was found NOT GUILTY? It matters not what you or I think he was found NOT GUILTY, by a jury of his peers. That is the problem! How can you NOT see this? I'm sympathetic towards the Brown and Goldman families, but NOTHING that happened 13 years ago should be reflected in this case or the sentencing thereof.

He got away with murder. He was fortunate that he had a good lawyer, the State of California had bad lawyers, and most of all he had a jury that could care ess what the evidence showed. After the trial, rather than leading a low profile life and staying out of trouble, OJ wrote a stupid book about how he did it and worse than that he has had several scrapes with the law. What a m0ron. Truth is he's arrogant and that arrogance caught up to him. My hope is that he spends the remainder of his days in jail because that's where he belongs.

Do you think that maybe, just maybe, there are more blacks than whites in prison is because more blacks than whites commit violent crimes?? Has that ever occurred to you?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:02 AM on 12/06/2008

no... its due to the system man... more whites get probation for crimes.... all brothers aren't locked up due to violent crimes..when we due kill tho it most of time isn't multiple its normally singular.... plus we have a lot of black males wit cases that get over turn due to the system not giving them a fair chance the first time around...now since we had this black white conversation let me add... its not about neither really its about justice... equal justice.. this was not equal and we all know it.... but since it was O.J people feel like it was just.. i wonder how hard people will protest for that clown of a president to be in jailed!! i doubt very few not in this country... and how many young Ron and Nicole's he's killed since ordering this bogus war!

That was my same reaction. They have all reason to be upset but there comes a point when you have to let that pursuit go because it will eat you alive! I think what is more interesting is that you do not see the Brown family acting in this manner. The American Justice system failed them yes, but you have to find closure through another means. Watching him up there, almost seeming to crave attention is almost as disgusting as OJ's book in my opinion.

You are so wrong. How do you know why Mr. Goldman comes acroos the way he does? Maybe his loss has been so huge he can't help himself. For me the idea of losing one of my kids to a monster is unspeakable. I would hope I would move on, but how do I know? I certainly do not want to know. Please stop blaming the victim's family.

the behavior of the goldmans including the relentless pursuit of OJ's royalties and showing up to watch OJ suffer...I understand that they want vengeance, but are they part of the solution or are they part of the problem? Revenge and vindication are emotions that are close cousins to anger and violence. I hope this judgement offers them a transformation

Their brother and son is dead. Nothing can bring him back. The anger the Goldman's show is the same type of anger I would show if my brother or son were killed.

The only thing they can do is make sure OJ pays for what he did.

I hope that when the Goldman's saw OJ go to jail this time, that it did give them some sense of peace. Kim Goldman said it best, "The judge sentenced him,and THIS TIME, he went out through the right door."....meaning jail instead of a free man.

I thought OJ was found not guilty? Either our justice system is flawed or it isn't. It seems to me that now that OJ got the sentence you feel he deserved, justice is restored. But when he was found not guilty, it was unjust. So basically, when things go your way, all is right? I don't understand.

Part of the problem in the criminal justice system in this country is that black defendents are often over charged and over sentenced. In this case, it appears that OJ may have been over sentenced given that he has no PRIOR FELONY CONVICTIONS - recall he was acquitted of the previous murder charges. However, I believe that this sentence was largely due to the prior acquittal for murder and not OJ's race. Then again, this judge has a reputation for being tough at sentencing. No one really knows for sure whether the judge was motivated by the prior acquittal or not.

So, the judge's sentences are in the 95 percentile of sentence lengths, even for aged 1st time offenders? Somehow, I doubt it. This sentence was excessive, even by "tough" standards. She pretty much sentenced OJ to death in prison, and she knows it. She has to consider these factors in sentencing, especially age, all the time.

First of all OJ put himself in this spot, not the judge, or the Goldman's.

Next time, don'tcommit a crime when you are of retirement age. If the sentence goes and he ends up dying in jail, he earned it by comitting armed robbery with a deadly weapon.
