LAS VEGAS - A broken O.J. Simpson was sentenced Friday to as much as 33 years in prison for a hotel armed robbery after a judge rejected his apology and said, "It was much more than stupidity."

The 61-year-old football Hall of Famer stood shackled and stone-faced as Judge Jackie Glass rattled off the punishment. Moments before, Simpson made a rambling, five-minute plea for leniency, simultaneously apologizing for the holdup as a foolish mistake and trying to justify his actions.

He choked back tears as he told her: "I didn't want to steal anything from anyone. ... I'm sorry, sorry."

Simpson said he was simply trying to retrieve sports memorabilia and other mementos, including his first wife's wedding ring, from two dealers when he stormed a Las Vegas hotel room on Sept. 13, 2007.

But the judge emphasized that it was a violent confrontation in which at least one gun was drawn, and she said someone could have been shot. She said the evidence was overwhelming, with the planning, the confrontation itself and the aftermath all recorded on audio or videotape.

Glass, a no-nonsense judge known for her tough sentences, imposed such a complex series of consecutive and concurrent sentences that even many attorneys watching the case were confused as to how much time Simpson got.

Simpson could serve up to 33 years but could be eligible for parole after nine years, according to Elana Roberto, the judge's clerk.

The judge said several times that her sentence in the Las Vegas case had nothing to do with Simpson's 1995 acquittal in the slaying of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

"I'm not here to try and cause any retribution or any payback for anything else," Glass said.

Simpson was immediately led away to prison after the judge refused to permit him to go free on bail while he appeals.

Simpson's co-defendant and former golfing buddy, Clarence "C.J. Stewart, also was sentenced to at least 15 years.

Outside court, Goldman's father, Fred Goldman, and sister, Kim, said they were delighted with the sentence.

"We are thrilled, and it's a bittersweet moment," Fred Goldman said. "It was satisfying seeing him in shackles like he belongs."

The Goldmans took a measure of credit for Simpson's fate, saying their relentless pursuit of his assets to satisfy a $33.5 million wrongful-death judgment "pushed him over the edge" and led him to commit the robbery to recover some of his sports memorabilia.

Simpson and Stewart were both brought to the courtroom in dark blue jail uniforms, their hands shackled to their waists with chains. Simpson, who looked weary and had not been expected to speak, delivered a somber statement to the judge.

As he spoke in a hoarse voice, the courtroom was hushed. His two sisters, Shirley Baker and Carmelita Durio, sat in the front row of the courtroom, along with his adult daughter.

Both men were convicted Oct. 3 of 12 criminal charges, including kidnapping and armed robbery.

"As stupid and as ill-conceived as it was, it wasn't something that was from this evil mind they teach us about," Simpson attorney Yale Galanter said before sentencing.

"Not bright, not smart, not well thought out, but certainly not from an evil mind," Galanter said.

Most of the 63 seats in the courtroom were taken by media, lawyers and family members of the defendants. Fifteen members of the public were also allowed.

After sentencing was over, the Goldmans left the courtroom and Kim threw her arms around her father and wept.

Simpson's sisters declined to comment, but Shirley Baker said on her way out: "It's not over."

Jurors who heard 13 days of testimony said after the verdict that they were convinced of Simpson's guilt because of audio recordings that were secretly made of the Sept. 13, 2007, robbery at the Palace Station casino hotel.

The confrontation involved sports memorabilia brokers Alfred Beardsley and Bruce Fromong. It was recorded by collectibles dealer Thomas Riccio, who was acting as middleman.

"Don't let nobody out of this room!" Simpson commands on the recordings, and instructs other men to scoop up items he insists had been stolen from him.

On Tuesday, Glass is scheduled to sentence four former co-defendants who took plea deals and testified against Simpson and Stewart.

Michael McClinton, Charles Cashmore, Walter Alexander and Charles Ehrlich could receive probation or prison time. McClinton could get up to 11 years; the others face less.

Lets be honest this is double jeopardy. They basically broke the law to take vengeance on OJ. I wonder how many times the courts system have broken the law in order to get a conviction they wanted?

I don't feel sorry for OJ, but something doesn't seem right about the way they did it.

Justice has been served, for all the wrong reasons. I say the sentence was harsh today, because it was absent in the past. Why did the judge have to mention the past? If justice was served the first time and I don't believe it was, this would not have taken place. Though I believe this was his destiny, it was revenge not justice that was served today. He should be serving life for murder, not 8/15 for the trumped up charges. He had a gun... Someone could have been killed as the judge remarks, did that insinuation comfort the judges conscious with regard too her judicial discretion? If it truly brings comfort to the Brown's and Goldman's so be it, I wish them well.

When OJ Simpson was at the top of his game, he made Carlton from the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air look like Malcolm X. Christ, he was on the board of about 5 companies back in the 80's and 90's.

i'm sorry for their loss, but i think the goldmans should have just stayed out of it and should'nt have taken "credit" for what happened to him, even though he probably didn't call the cops b/c he wanted to get the memorabilia under the table so that he could hide the assets and not have to pay them.

that's the problem with narcissism - you think you're above the law and that you won't get caught. was it worth the risk, OJ? wouldn't it have just been better to call the cops and maybe have to pay up a little money to the goldmans rather than spending even one night in jail?

OJ's a dirtbag, but does this really serve the public good? did these dealers know the goods were stolen?

we won't know his final sentence until after they appeal.

Nobody knows what happened when Nichole and Ron were killed.
Nobody knows who killed them. Marsha Clark and what's his name,
conducted the worst prosecution in history. An all white jury could not
have convicted him on the evidence presented. For all who are happy
and rejoicing in this, consider how easy it is to be set up, to make it seem
you are guilty of a crime. Circumstantial evidence is just that, circumstantial.
Go watch the movie Enemy of the State with Will Smith and see how easy
it is for you to get destroyed, innocent though you may be. I hold no brief
for OJ Simpson, but justice cannot be colored by emotion.

I watched the entire trial. I was riveted. OJ Simpson killed those two people jsut as sure as the sun rises in the east. The racial make up of the jury is the only reason he was acquitted.

One of the more racist comments here today.

I watched the entire trial myself and thought "Only a idiot can say that he did that without a doubt." You cannot convict someone if there is a shred of doubt, so without a witness, there was always doubt. His trial was fair and just years ago, and so was the trial for this robbery case. The sentencing in the robbery case was the problem. The punishment did not fit the crime.

Read OJs' book in his own words. The title "if I did it it", what a joke, he just could not stop himself from bragging about what he had done and gotten away with.

If he had not done it, it would be too horiffic to contemplate writting such a book. Did not his children suffer enough? What regard did he have for the Godlman and Brown families writing that atrocity?

Think about it. If your exwife and a waiter returning her property were slashed to death, with your children very possibly watching from their bedroom windows, would you write a book "pretending " you had done it?

After seeing all those horrible photographs of your dead exwife, throat slashed right back to the bones of her neck, blood everywhere. Could you even remotley think of putting yourself in the murderers shoes, and take the time to write a book about it?

Dredge it all up again for your children, their grandparents, aunts and uncles. Dredge it up for the family of the mrdered waiter?

I definitely think there was a conspiracy to get him. There's so many people that have been disgusted that he's been a free man. I'm not saying one way or the other as to my belief in his innocence or guilt. I also don't think this was a grand conspiracy of people targetting him. I do think there was a very small group, which most likely included these memorabilia dealers.

I mean, think about it. Why would they have audio recorded this encounter if it had been a spontaneous event? The recording implies planning.

Also, why would this have occured in Nevada, of all places? As I understand it, Nevada has very harsh gun control laws.

Definitely a small conspiracy to put him behind bars.

WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE BRINGING IN RACE???
this case is about attempted robbery ... oj should realize that bringing guns is criminal and illegal - PERIOD
the 1st oj trial was about 2 horrible murders - race was a distraction to fool an ignorant / biased jury - no race issue there either.
it was really sick to see "black america" jumping for joy when he was found "not guilty" ... that was very innappropriate - 2 people died horribly and the defense tricked you into believing that if ONE item of evidense seemed suspicious, then that constitutes reasonable doubt ... which is NOT true
THIS IS NOT ABOUT OJ the BLACK MAN ... IT IS ABOUT OJ the MAN THAT DOES WHATEVER HE WANTS AND IS NOW PAYING FOR THIS RECENT CRIME ... no others

Absolutely not. The black people who deny facts and evidence to protect a sociopath should be critiqued. The Browns and Goldmans probably wish they had never met the likes of OJ. Neither family has gotten any money from OJ. There has been no leeching. You need to get your priorities in order. Defending OJ? Wow.

i dont believe in black america or white america ... what the whites did to all non-whites is horrible ... the jews were slaughtered in europe and the pope and white american turned its back ... the indians were slaughtered here, the mexicans were slaughtered ... the japanese were imprisoned and the blacks were enslaved, tortured and murdered and in all these cases, white christian people turned their backs!!!
i do not condone race separation ... and i will always state my critique on their not being a "black america" ... did oj commit a crime this time??? then he got whats coming.
and the goldmans didnt jump up and down they cried ... have some empathy and compassion - it wasnt oj that was the victim!

You flouted the criminal justice system in order to enhance a sentence (double jeopardy) of a man who was found not guilty years ago.

I have no sympathy for OJ, but this is wrong. It showed clearly that the sentencing is subjective. Black get more time than whites. If you are rich and whites, you get the minimum. If you're black, you get the maximum.

"Both men were convicted Oct. 3 of 12 criminal charges, including kidnapping and armed robbery."

He did not get 33 years for just armed robbery! He was found guilty of 12 criminal charges! He will serve a minimum of 9 years...9 years for 12 crimes (including kidnapping) sounds pretty fair to me.

It does seem like a lot for this offense, but it is ironic that he got caught trying to retrieve some possessions or assets that he had probably been hiding from the Goldmans. And for those who think it was payback and say that they saw the whole first trial and think he was innocent I saw it too -- and I saw all of the dirty tricks and delays that his attorneys played on the court -- it was a real circus. Haven't seen too many of his defense "experts" making the rounds for every murder story lately, but I have no respect for any of them. One of them is trying to sell some law things on TV now -- to make a buck. This whole story has been a tragedy for many many people, some innocent and some not so innocent. I guess I feel a little sorry for poor O.J. -- he really does look pathetic.

The man is an arrogant piece of crap. And it was his arrogance that did him in. Even his faux contrition during sentencing today smacked of arrogance. He tried to weasel out of what he did by being self deprecating, but it didn't work. He messed with the bull so he got the horns.

The public needs to recognize, armed robbery is looked upon seriously. Its not a minor offense. He didn't just act in collusion, he lied about the guns. That is what really hurt him. Had he said, yes, I knew about the guns, what was going to happen, ect. He still might have been convicted, but his sentence would have been reduced. He chose to lie. Judges don't look kindly on this.

Especially when they thought he didn't get convicted the first time...

As I said earlier, his sentence was more than 95% of ALL robbery sentences, including those of armed robbers with hardened criminal records.
