Bush Neighbor

As was reported this week, George Bush has bought a new house in a wealthy part of Dallas, called Preston Hollow, to live in after he leaves office. Preston Hollow homeowners are used to having well-known neighbors; the area is already home to Dallas Mavericks' owner Marc Cuban and former presidential candidate Ross Perot. And while many of the Bushes' new neighbors seem perfectly happy and excited to welcome the former first couple, a few of them, reports the Wall Street Journal, have some significant reservations:

The impending presence of a former President is ratcheting up security fears. "I am afraid with all the negative press the president has been getting, the whole neighborhood is going to be a target," said a woman, who wouldn't give her name. She carried her King Charles spaniel Friday past the Bushes' new abode.

But Raw Story reports that the area had some issues long before Bush made it his new home.

Until 2000, the neighborhood association's covenant said only white people were allowed to live there, though an exception was made for servants. The document, enacted in 1956, reads:

"Said property shall be used and occupied by white persons only except these covenants shall not prevent occupancy by domestic servants of different race or nationality in the employ of a tenant."

Oh, puhleeze! The only 'target' this people need to worry about is the Target store moving in adjacent to their racist neighborhood! 'W' is a a worldwide laughing stock and NOBODY will even care where he is! This is such a non-issue from these people. If they are truly afraid, they have more than enough money to hire bodyguards. GAD!

From Whaco to Dallas -- hot, dry, bigoted, ignorant, and often visited by God's wrath in the form of tornados. Only place I would live in TX is Austin -- it it weren't so HOT there in the summer. Sure people act friendly, but there are a lot of nasties who feel justified to do whatever they want because first they're Texans, second they're Christians, and third you must have deserved it. I've lived in the area between Lubbock and Amarillo, Denton, and Austin and know whereof I speak.

The last part of the article is cheap journalism. all homes built during that period contained this deed restriction. It's a cheap political issue that is brought up all the time. These restrictions we deemed unlawful years ago and most deeds are not changed because there is no need to change the paperwork. C'mon, everybody knows this stuff.
I have been OPPOSED TO BUSH for 16 years, living in Texas, Iknow this guy is the worst, but not a racist.

I think the point is that THIS neighborhood didn't remove that clause until 2000. Look I lived in Dallas and am very familiar with the Preston Hollow / Highland Park / SMU area, and believe me when I tell you that it is the most common thing in the world there to see folks pulled over and harrased by the police for nothing more than Driving While Black. It is a VERY racist area, though you'd never get any of those blue-bloods to admit it.

I don't think anyone accused Bush of being a racist....he'll just be "palling around" with racists.

NYT, " Supreme Court ruled against racially restrictive covenants in 1948, and they were outlawed by the federal Fair Housing Act of 1968. But because so many of them remain in deeds and neighborhood bylaws, some states, including California, have moved to eliminate them. Advocates for their removal reason that the restrictions, even if illegal, provide justification for subtle racism..."

The proof would be in the pudding. What does GW's new community look like?
