CHICAGO — President-elect Barack Obama said Saturday he's asked his economic team for a recovery plan that saves or creates more than 2 million jobs, makes public buildings more energy-efficient and invests in the country's roads and schools.

"We won't just throw money at the problem," Obama said in his weekly radio address and Internet video. "We'll measure progress by the reforms we make and the results we achieve _ by the jobs we create, by the energy we save, by whether America is more competitive in the world."

Obama's remarks come after the Labor Department announced Friday that employers cut 533,000 jobs in November, the most in 34 years.

Obama said his plan would put millions of people to work by "making the single largest new investment in our national infrastructure since the creation of the federal highway system in the 1950s."

WATCH:

He also wants to install energy-saving light bulbs and replace old heating systems in federal buildings to cut costs and create jobs.

School buildings would get an upgrade, too. "Because to help our children compete in a 21st century economy, we need to send them to 21st century schools," Obama said.

As a part of the plan, Obama said he wants to expand Internet access in communities. Hospitals also should be connected to each other online.

"Here, in the country that invented the Internet, every child should have the chance to get online," he said.

Obama said he would announce other details of the economic recovery plan in the coming weeks. He said he'd work with Congress to pass the initiative when lawmakers reconvene in January.

Every year the population of US increases exponentially. In the next ten years, the current (obsolete) infrastructure will not be able to support the growth in population. None of the candidates talked about how to handle this, during the election. I hope Obama brings up this country to the 21st century standards. Though we like to call ourselves a superpower, we are living in the medieval ages with so much racisim, hatred, corruption, intolerance, divisiveness and venom.

God bless us all...

I found Obama's desire to link all hospitals and doctor's offices via the Internet intriguing.

I read Robert Reich's comments about calling this fiasco a Depression. Frightening to think of it. We were never able to save for retirement. We depended on the value of our home to help us. Which is worth less than it was when we paid for it. This isn't just about freeing up loan money and getting business to function again. My husband is 68, He can't retire, but his job ended because the company he worked for downsized....so he is now looking for work. Two Master's degrees...... Highly skilled..... and no one will hire him, partly due to his age. My business has been slow and I don't know how I will keep working. An ice floe looks good right now. We are going under and none of what President Obama is going to do will help us in time. I am not faulting him, but we do fault the cowardly criminal who unfortunately occupies the oval office. He has a lot to apologize for. But we are not holding our breath. We expect he will enjoy his new home in Texas. But I believe that O.J. has two beds in his cell in Las Vegas. Maybe W. could bunk with him? Both being lying murderers, they have a lot in common........

I can already hear Rush Limbaugh's comments about how many federal employees it takes to screw in a light bulb...

It's about time some one lead us into the 21st century...Al Gore is the last high tech visionary leader we've had..Bush and Cheney contibutions to the advancement of technolgy and science to this country will be compared to what Catholic Church's contribution to Europe's Dark Ages..

I know! To see most of Europe and Japan surpass the U.S. in terms of scientific research is outrageous. It actually makes me mad. Its time to remedy this

It pisses me off...This country has been hijacked with relgious fanatics that is so caught up in biblical nonsense that it has stagnated our advancement in educaiton, health care, science, etc.. Most of them are unemployed now as an indirect result of this craziness but you all they're going to do is wait for God to help them..

shut up matty! give the man a chance to get in office. if it wasn't for bush's lies and blunders we wouldn't have troops in iraq or the need for a bailout package. Obama is going to be the best President the United States of America has ever had.

I understand they can build an elevator into space. I'm not sure how its done but physics says its possible. It was on TV.
We should do that. It may be cheaper than a rocket. And it will create science jobs.

I hope that the majority of "stimulus" packages are of the public works variety. I'm tired of hearing about how we need to boost consumer confidence and get people shopping again to recover the economy. If there's one area that I disagree with Keynesian Economics (or what passes for it amongst the laymen, at least) it's the notion that the government can fix the economy solely by stimulating the demand side.

What we need are investments into productive assets, not just new consumer crap. Buying too much crap on credit is what got us into this mess in the first place.

It's a shame whenever the government has to march in and try to play the white knight for the economy, because it rarely works the way we hope. But if the government is going to step in, revitalizing and expanding public infrastructure is the way to go, rather than throwing cash at people through ill-advised tax cuts. That new video game you buy might stimulate the economy at some fractional level once, but better infrastructure can pay dividends for decades, even if it takes a little longer to get the projects off the ground.

I so agree with you. We don't build any more. Our economy is based on the intangible...credit. Give the people more credit so they can dig themselves deeper. People need good paying jobs and those jobs are obtained by building things. Give people a decent wage and they will take care of stimulating the economy.

linking the hospitals sounds interesting, but the data is not there, the data is in the insurance systems...the results are in the hospitals, and the lab result system was being added as early as 1984 at Valley General in Washington State...

Single payer is going to be the only way to cut costs, we have been talking about tweaking the system for the last 30 years with HMOs and bene id cards, but the insurance companies AND the employers did not see any reasonable return on the investment or they would already have done the bene id cards... The HMOs are interesting, in Maryland, the HMO started in Columbia, a town that was less than 10 years old and affiliated with Hopkins and the residents were in their 20s with little healthcare expenses... The healthcare story of the last 30 years has been ADVERSE RISK SELECTION and they are not going to give that up without REGULATION....

There's only one way to achieve single payer health care in this country, and that's to first expand Medicare/Medicaid to cover the 47-50 million now totally without health insurance, and later open it to anyone who wishes to drop whatever sorry insurance they might currently have.

It's called competition...and once the insurance companies are finally forced into a competitive situation, they'll either learn to play like adults or they'll fold. Simple as that.

As far as I'm concerned, the overall health of this country's citizens is far too important to "entrust" to a few rapacious corporations.

I think Obama's healthcare plan is on the right path. Its a start, and introduction to the American people that nationalized healthcare is not a scary thing. Once people see how well it works, he might be able to expand this. Lets not repeat the Clinton debacle

I hope Boehner and Sanford keep screaming "we need to bring down the deficit" while 70% of the country wants the government to be active in solving this emergency. It will guarantee the death of the GOP ideology once and for all. As Chris Matthews said the other day, "Deficits only seem to irritate the Republicans when they're not the ones spending the cash."

This is great, but we also need a new railroad system across the USA modeled on the Japanese bullet train so that it becomes a major form of transportation across the country. We need this new rail system to replace cars and make it more convenient for users. Replace highways with a new and efficient rail system.

I ran across an interesting factoid the other day...subsidies to the oil and gas industries cost each American taxpayer approximately $2000 a year. What do subsidies to Amtrak cost us? $40 apiece.

Hmmm...and to think Republicans are always yappin' "Amtrak is a waste of public money".

I agree.t high speed bullet trains that does not interrupt road traffic.. Also, new high tech interstates/freeways with sensors that allow interface to cars computer system to reduce traffic jams..too many productive hours spent sitting in traffic.
