CHICAGO — President-elect Barack Obama said Saturday he's asked his economic team for a recovery plan that saves or creates more than 2 million jobs, makes public buildings more energy-efficient and invests in the country's roads and schools.

"We won't just throw money at the problem," Obama said in his weekly radio address and Internet video. "We'll measure progress by the reforms we make and the results we achieve _ by the jobs we create, by the energy we save, by whether America is more competitive in the world."

Obama's remarks come after the Labor Department announced Friday that employers cut 533,000 jobs in November, the most in 34 years.

Obama said his plan would put millions of people to work by "making the single largest new investment in our national infrastructure since the creation of the federal highway system in the 1950s."

WATCH:

He also wants to install energy-saving light bulbs and replace old heating systems in federal buildings to cut costs and create jobs.

School buildings would get an upgrade, too. "Because to help our children compete in a 21st century economy, we need to send them to 21st century schools," Obama said.

As a part of the plan, Obama said he wants to expand Internet access in communities. Hospitals also should be connected to each other online.

"Here, in the country that invented the Internet, every child should have the chance to get online," he said.

Obama said he would announce other details of the economic recovery plan in the coming weeks. He said he'd work with Congress to pass the initiative when lawmakers reconvene in January.

Obama's already doing a better job than Bush and he's not even in office yet.

This is great so long as the goverment knows that they work for US "We the People" and do not dictate how and when we shall live with respect to our individual right toward each other.
Freedom truly is, always a generation away ,and once it is all gone it will take a bloody revolution to regain it.

Hs this been you objective for the past 8 years, or just since the election? The reason I ask is, there is nothing in the statement, article or bog about civili liberties. This is about making American jobs, giving people a chance, creating oppotunities and re-igniting the spirit of America. Where did you read anything about the "respect to our individual right", or "freedom", that would indicate those values were up for ramsom?

We have lived through an 8 year period under the current administration that has caused a cessation of American civil liberties, by presidential fiat. It'sa little late in the game for your concern now. We voted the GOP out. Get it?

Both parties are at fault and it started before Bush, it is a great idea but we must keep the goverment in check no matter how much you love or hate the goverment.

See a video of the Tesla Electric Car.
This is the type of automobiles the Detroit automakers
should be making. This is where our tax moneys should be invested,
so the price can come down.

How the hell do you think the US will pay for that? US means us!! I am all for people who want to work having the opportunity to do so but somebody has to pay the forlks. Pelosi and Frank let the Treasury spend Trillions for Paulsons' Wallstreet friends, he's backed off of the windfall profit tax on oil companies, the troops will still be in Iraq for years with more going to Afganistan, trillions are going to everybody with a tin cup with no accountability. The great welfare state has turned to the great welfare stake through our heart. The next bunch with a tin cup will be our President kneeling before the Peoples Party in China asking for a "bridge loan for the US. I hope China doesn't run out of money for us to borrow

Give all politicians polygraphs one a week to monitor their graft and self serving actions. You see no one really wants to change this because if they did then they would have to live by the same constricting rules. Screw the Democratic Party and the GOP. Demand the people hold all politicians accountable. You have to start with almost all new rules because the present ones were written by less than honest people with clear political or monetary prejudices.

That's it Mr. President Elect, set the bar high. So many years of crappy Presidents, I'm not sure if America is going to know how to act with a President that is really doing his job.

For sure. This is so true. People have been beaten down and depressed so much since the 2000 election was stolen, they're going to be shocked how much can be accomplished when we are no longer discouraged, and have a brilliant man at the helm of the ship.

People that underestimate the U.S. will lose every time.

I was refering to members of both parties. I have searched the websites (right and left)
and it does appear that Demos have more ties to F&F Mac, if there were more Repos, we would hear more outrage in Congress for them to step down.

I don't think zippy really cares about who did what when, as long as everyone gets blamed equally, regardless of the truth.

Boy does this country need this! We're only going to be printing money faster than Zimbabwe for a time, then we'll tighten our belts. We just have to get out of the neocon-created crisis first.

More Jobs more taxes paid and more purchasing.

Cramer told everyone to go our and purchase home over 7 months ago. And was begging goverment to give more loans easy to purchase a home.

Cramer is not always correct and for sure his advice is often wrong.

This is how the American President should be communicating to the American People. In my history class, I learn about all these great presidents. I learn about the Fireside Chats FDR had to address the issues he would take on in the coming weeks. I watch movies that depict the ideal way a president addresses the American People. One such movie, is Deep Impact (not because he was black. but because he addressed the people on TV with honesty and authority). I always wondered when America would have a President like the ones I've read about in History Class or watched on a Movie.

Yep, jobs for a couple million, less than 1 percent of the American people. But financed through deficit financing that will destroy the dollar and therefore the savings of hundreds of millions and have unknown but significant impacts on the economy. But good for the corporates who stand to make $600 billion just on the interest from the borrowing, which is the real point. Hopefully the jobs won't all disappear when the bills start coming due. Most of them will, of course, but maybe a few will last. Looks like Obama is going to be the most corporate president ever, much, much more so than Bush, maybe even more than Clinton, if that's even possible.

Don't get me wrong. Love the idea of investing in the infrastructure. But to suggest such a plan without even mentioning the financing at a time when the US is verging on bankruptcy is staggeringly irresponsible. Almost criminal.
