CHICAGO — President-elect Barack Obama said Saturday he's asked his economic team for a recovery plan that saves or creates more than 2 million jobs, makes public buildings more energy-efficient and invests in the country's roads and schools.

"We won't just throw money at the problem," Obama said in his weekly radio address and Internet video. "We'll measure progress by the reforms we make and the results we achieve _ by the jobs we create, by the energy we save, by whether America is more competitive in the world."

Obama's remarks come after the Labor Department announced Friday that employers cut 533,000 jobs in November, the most in 34 years.

Obama said his plan would put millions of people to work by "making the single largest new investment in our national infrastructure since the creation of the federal highway system in the 1950s."

WATCH:

He also wants to install energy-saving light bulbs and replace old heating systems in federal buildings to cut costs and create jobs.

School buildings would get an upgrade, too. "Because to help our children compete in a 21st century economy, we need to send them to 21st century schools," Obama said.

As a part of the plan, Obama said he wants to expand Internet access in communities. Hospitals also should be connected to each other online.

"Here, in the country that invented the Internet, every child should have the chance to get online," he said.

Obama said he would announce other details of the economic recovery plan in the coming weeks. He said he'd work with Congress to pass the initiative when lawmakers reconvene in January.

Natural gas is not an oxym oron. Millions of liters of natural gas are created every day in the environment. In fact it the only "fossil fuel" that is sustainable. It's all about harnessing and collecting natural gas from natural resources and mundane as garbage dumps and sewer treatment plants. As we speak thousands of garbage dumps have large pipes burrowed in them and they just bu rn the natural gas created so the dumps don't bl ow up. These out of the box ideas are needed to we en ourselves off of foreign oil. To put nature gas in the same category as oil is just plain wrong. Right now we mine for natural gas because we are just not willing to put in the investment to develop it, well naturally.

Every state should have three new science & tech colleges. State of the art research facilities with budgets to compete for the best professors available. In addition five new energy research labs sharing research and resources should be built, training engineers and technicians as well as being the leading edge of the American energy sector. The academies could be up and running in three years and be turning out their first graduates by 2014.
Places & academic scholarships could be based on an entrance exam open to anyone who wants to apply. Create a new academic tier, free of the some of the prejudices that exist in the ivy league.
We need to start churning out scientists and engineers, software architects and researchers.
America has allowed a learning gap, and it is time to gain the upperhand again.

We've fallen way behind in vital STEM education (science, technology, engineering, math), and it will take a massive effort to get back up to speed.

Many public schools across the country can't even get the 3 basics down: reading, writing and arithmatic. I am so glad I live in a state where the public school system is just as good as the private system. My daughter now goes to a state college and is having NO trouble at all working full time and going to school full time. Believe me when I say that there is at least one state out here that still has good schools. And that state is Texas.

She is a product of the Texas Public School System, and what a great example of excellence she is!

But first we need schools that can prepare people for these colleges. It's a good idea but we need to make our schools better first.

Innovation is needed. America must convert to a "renewal energy economy".

That's why it's called natural gas because it's the only gas nature produces in huge quantities every day.

It can also be easily generated by processing organic waste with methanogenic microorganisms, taking care of two problems simultaneously.

Yes yes yes. Some educated people instead of some knee jerk responses about how natural gas is unsustainable and hurts the environment the way we get it now. That is so backward looking.

After methane is the cleanest mobile energy source we have, save for plug in electric cars using wind or solar power.

Biodiesel produces more nitrous oxides and particulates than gasoline but far less CO2 and CO, so it is a good trade off in the long run.

Sounds good to me. What's really sad about the Bush administration is that he doubled our national debt, but what do we have to show for it? Victory in Iraq is a hoop dream and our economy is in the toilet. Although to be fair Clinton contributed as well.

Does anyone know how bad emissions are with biodiesel? They are just as bad as vehicles run with regular diesel.

Anyone who lives in a city with gas powered buses are amazed at how cleanly they run.

Also natural gas is sustainable and a possible renewable energy. Natural gas can be made from garbage treated with bacteria. It is years away but far from being off the table for a renewable energy souce. Because right now hydrogen is made with natural gas if you don't know so more investment in that field would be a huge payoff. So many of you are stuck in 20th century thinking.

We need a combination of strategies if we are going to succeed, depending on the location. Goteburg, Sweden runs buses on fuel made from fish leftovers from the cities main business, the fishing industry.
This won't work in Boise.
We need to get over the big business model that one solution is universal. Small and local is often better.

The emissions are less, but the net carbon footprint of most biodiesel is equal to regular gas due to the increased resources required to produce and harvest the crop. In addition it takes huge tracts of arable land and water. Biodiesel is a step towards energy independence, but not towards carbon neutrality.

Sorry as a chemist diesel and biodiesal are still complex hydrocarbons so they will have very similar limitations on emissions. Some impurities are different but the elephants for both diesels are in the same room.
