Politico:

Is there a lesson to be learned from the defeat of William Jefferson, an incumbent indicted on bribery charges and found with $90,000 in cash in a freezer?

Sure: Don't get indicted, and don't get caught with $90,000 in cash in your freezer.

But Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) insists there's something more. In a memo to colleagues called "The Time is Cao," Boehner says that Anh "Joseph" Cao's win over Jefferson in a heavily Democratic district points the way out of the wilderness. The House GOP focus, he argues, ought to be ethics, ethics, ethics.

THIS IS WHY THERE WILL NEVER BE A REPUBLICAN "BARACK OBAMA"

Piyush Jindal is transformed into the “more acceptable” BOBBY Jindal.

And the newest GOP congressman Anh Cao is known as JOSEPH Cao.

Sure there are more examples… but I ask WHY?

If this how the GOP supposedly embraces diversity?

No wonder they couldn’t wrap their brain around the fact that Barack Hussein Obama had the audacity to use --- GASP--- his real name.

If he were a Republican... Our President Elect would be called the much less cool "Barry Obama" or something mature like Mitt, Skip, or Scooter Obama!

As a minority, I'm always curious when other minorities align themselves with the Republican Party. I've always felt that minorities would not be where we are if it weren't for Democrats. (I apologize if I am offending anyone - those are not my intentions. These are just my personal beliefs.)

Well, I come from a very Republican background and I'm a person of color born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. Down here, there are plenty of black Republicans. I think it has a lot to do with religion and heritage. You sort of inherit your political party. For instance, I know folks who wouldn't dream of voting for a "conservative" but would NEVER change their party affiliation as Republicans. A lot of the middle-class (blacks, whites, Latinos, and Asians) seemed scared of being pushed back down to the bottom rung and they think the Republicans will look out for them since they are a part of the "good, working-folks" in Louisiana. The economically disadvantaged people who are ethnic minorities tend to go Democratic down here. I don't know if there is a real explanation for it, but that's all I've got.

The only reason why Cao won that seat is beause of Jefferson's scandal. I would like to say congrats to Cao forwinning that seat and you can enjoy that seat for 2 years because that is a heavily Dem district and I believe you will lose to a Dem in 2010.

The unintended humor of the piece is that you can just about hear Mr. Boehner say 'hey, we should give this honest broker crap a shot'.

Lemme see now... barely a month past the election and... The future is Palin. No, the future is Jindal. No the future is Cao.
How many futures does this bunch get?
04:03 PM on 12/08/2008

i had to do that. Sorry
03:49 PM on 12/08/2008
WTF??? What happened to Bobby Jindel????
02:53 PM on 12/08/2008
Translation, the republicans have nobody.

The new strategy for Republicans: implicate as many Democrats as possible to corruption rings until they can win back the House. One down, 39 more to go!
02:52 PM on 12/08/2008
Jefferson implicated himself...no help needed.

For every Democrat involved in a scandal, how many Republicans are involved in their own scandals?
02:23 PM on 12/08/2008
The GOP is trying to brand themselves as the United Colors of Benetton or something. lol
12:58 PM on 12/08/2008
I thought the future was Palin.

No, wait, I thought it was Jindal.

Once upon a time, it was Jeb Bush.

Now it's Cao.

I can't keep up.

They're backing and filling pretty fast these days.

The same people who weren't allowed, until eight short years ago, to live in the neighborhood hand-picked by george and laura are now considered the future of the Republican party? This gives me a sick feeling it's about tokenism rather than transcendence, opportunism rather than optimism, and a teeth-gritting ends justify the means mentality. And that's nothing new with that crowd.

Don't feel bad for William Jefferson. He has $90,000 in cash in his freezer to help pay for his lawyers or to live on until he finds a real job or gets thrown in jail.

If he does go to jail, he can continue to live off the Federal Government.

Great news!
