Three major media companies all revealed grim news Monday.

The Tribune Company announced
it would be seeking bankruptcy protection:

Media conglomerate Tribune Co., smothered by $13 billion in debt and a drop-off in advertising, on Monday became the first major newspaper publisher to seek bankruptcy protection since the Internet sent the industry into a tailspin.

Most of the company's debt comes from the complex transaction in which the company was taken private, with employee ownership, by real estate mogul Sam Zell last year. Although Tribune's next major debt payment isn't due until June, the company has been in danger of missing financial targets set by its lenders.

The New York Times Company
said it would try to ease a cash problem by borrowing up to $225 million against its mid-Manhattan headquarters.

The New York Times Company plans to borrow up to $225 million against its mid-Manhattan headquarters building, to ease a potential cash flow squeeze as the company grapples with tighter credit and shrinking profits.

The company has retained Cushman & Wakefield, the real estate firm, to act as its agent to secure financing, either in the form of a mortgage or a sale-leaseback arrangement, said James M. Follo, the Times Company's chief financial officer.

NBC Universal Chief Jeff Zucker told investors
that he was considering scaling back the network's programming hours:

A terrible fall season at NBC is forcing the network to consider scaling back the number of hours it airs programming, Chief Executive Jeff Zucker told an investor conference Monday.

While NBC will continue to fund the creation of pilots, Zucker told analysts at a media investor conference sponsored by UBS that NBC is considering cutting the number of hours or perhaps even the number of nights it provides programming.

I agree with everyone here. Let them all fail. Foreign companies will buy them so the jobs will be saved. China and Japan make better products anyway. Its all the unions fault anyway, and that will be corrected when the new foreign owners move these companies to Alabama.

FOOTNOTE: cool how one post can apply to six different threads today!

The failure has nothing to do with the unions it has everything to do with greed! short term profit instead of long term goals.
If you believe unions are the cause you must be an ignorant republican!

I disagree. If NBC had been concentrating on more efficient shows ten years ago, they wouldn't be in this situation now. And they would be much more competitive if they didn't have to carry all those legacy actor's healthcare and pensions. I know for a fact that the average Japanese comedy show actor only is paid $5/hour, compared to the $10M/show US actors get! No money for NBC!!!

America needs Hybrid shows. Think: "Meet the View," or "Everybody Loves Nightline," etc. We need to make shows that average 38 laughs per segment or how can we possibly compete?

Right! And we need shows that run on their own electricity. Its the 21st century - why should I have to plug my TV into the wall!? Such a waste of energy. In Europe, where TVs are three times the cost as here, people peddle their own TVs to power them. And don't get me started on mass viewing!

There are right wing nut-jobs just as there are left wing nut-jobs but those groups are the fringe and to cater to one single group would not bring the ratings necessary to keep the network afloat. Is it possible that there are more mainstream types viewing those types of media outlets and if so, wouldn't it be good business for Tribune, NBC, etc to broaden their appeal?

The NY TIMES is reporting that NBC has signed a new contract with Jay Leno to give him the 10:00 PM time slot five nights a week in an effort to keep him at the network. This is good news for Leno fans.

And with this meltdown, they announced David Gregory as host of MTP? No wonder they are losing money and ratings. Jay Leno needs to retire. I really like his monologue but that is it. He is showing signs of Alzheimer's. I have it too and I am not that old. He means to say something, but instead says something else. It is time for a younger person to take over and I don't think it is Conan O'Brien because he is really not that funny to me.

Nor to me. But, I disagree about Leno not being sharp anymore. I think some of his monologues (which are all I watch too) are right on target. Not all of them, but enough of them to make him worth watching.

Jeff Zucker has platooned the line-up at NBC with all his no-talent cronies. It never fails that when I get disgusted at a pathetic example of TV programming, the TV is tuned to NBC.

NBC deserves to fail, just like those other dinosaurs of American capitalism, GM and Lehman Brothers.

What a sneaky, snarky way to silence the voices of the public. I think I have seen it all. God forbid if the mdia was to allow the news and voices of the public, and show thier dissent. This is nothing more than a means to shut down any form of media at all. This is becoming more and more a communist country all the time. Why not just skip the damn election and force us all to wear a burka and get it over with. SOB's. Media must be allowed to be our one vice, means to get actual news, use our voices to scream our dissent. Screw this.

For all of you who say 'let the media die' let me clue you in. There are alot of non-celebs who work at these companies many in your towns. My husband worked for local TV that is owned by one of the big three. He has been laid-off and the prospects look bleek. ONLY THE FAT CATS OF THE COMPANIES WIN WHEN THE CHIPS ARE DOWN. THE LITTLE GUY GETS SCREWED.

These media companies toss out middle management, secretaries and admin staff. They never take a cut in their big bonuses or paychecks.

Why bail out a dying breed? We're looking at a complete facelift of American corporations here and nobody's so much as consulted Oprah, what gives? Why is there reason to believe paper news companies will be ever able to payback a loan? Why don't they resolve the imminent and put their rags online in total? The business people will still get them because they look so coy with them tucked under their arms, and they'd open up more positions for more writers with more space in an online format.
