Three major media companies all revealed grim news Monday.

The Tribune Company announced
it would be seeking bankruptcy protection:

Media conglomerate Tribune Co., smothered by $13 billion in debt and a drop-off in advertising, on Monday became the first major newspaper publisher to seek bankruptcy protection since the Internet sent the industry into a tailspin.

Most of the company's debt comes from the complex transaction in which the company was taken private, with employee ownership, by real estate mogul Sam Zell last year. Although Tribune's next major debt payment isn't due until June, the company has been in danger of missing financial targets set by its lenders.

The New York Times Company
said it would try to ease a cash problem by borrowing up to $225 million against its mid-Manhattan headquarters.

The New York Times Company plans to borrow up to $225 million against its mid-Manhattan headquarters building, to ease a potential cash flow squeeze as the company grapples with tighter credit and shrinking profits.

The company has retained Cushman & Wakefield, the real estate firm, to act as its agent to secure financing, either in the form of a mortgage or a sale-leaseback arrangement, said James M. Follo, the Times Company's chief financial officer.

NBC Universal Chief Jeff Zucker told investors
that he was considering scaling back the network's programming hours:

A terrible fall season at NBC is forcing the network to consider scaling back the number of hours it airs programming, Chief Executive Jeff Zucker told an investor conference Monday.

While NBC will continue to fund the creation of pilots, Zucker told analysts at a media investor conference sponsored by UBS that NBC is considering cutting the number of hours or perhaps even the number of nights it provides programming.

I think we are now seeing people wisening up and realizing that there are more options out there than just tabloid TV. People just want some sensibility and that times are changing. I for one really enjoy BBC news. Its more informative and there is so much that is happening in the world that they cover well.

oh, and a ps to NBC, blocking Canadians from your web videos is not going to win you fans or viewers of sponsor supporters up here. So, yeah, go away.

This is all George Bush's fault. Obama will save the media.

He'll certainly improve the count of complete sentences spoken vs. Duhmbya.

No, the media will need to drastically update their technology because of Obama. All those pesky complete sentences and coherent thoughts.

No worries though, $25B will be set aside for media to embrace literate efficient technologies.

The media saved Obama

How did the media help Obama exactly? They attacked him whenever they could. The problem was there wasn't anything legitimate to attack him on.

I generally watch NBC nightly news, Olbermann and Maddow, and the occasional football game. On rare occasions, I might watch SNL. That's absolutely it for my NBC television viewing. I haven't seen one of their dramas or sitcoms in years and years. Sure, the economy's bad, but things might be easier for them if they had a decent product. They've been a vaste wasteland for most of my life.

It's so weird. Entire series have ended and I then realize I haven't seen even one episode. Oh well, doubt I've missed much,

All is forgiven though if this downturn forces a layoff of Hannity and O'Reilly. :)

Americans and their government should, after this crisis, apply severe laws on mass concentration in Banking and Media. When these large corporate structures collapse, they reek havoc. If there were multiple smaller corporations involved and 1 fails, there is much less impact on society.

Can Fixed News go under already? I will be pleased to see them standing in the breadline. Hundreds of Republicans asking for a bailout...oh that would be sweet irony. Who will be redistributing the wealth then w i n g n u t s?

Hopefully after a couple of years standing in the snow waiting for Obama's press corps to toss them breadcrumbs, they'll start folding their tents. Fingers crossed!

Prime time network TV will never be able to compete with prime time cable TV until the FCC loosens up regulations. HBO and Showtime show the edgy shows people want to watch, but they would never be able to get by the network censors.

True. Heck the best shows I watch are on cable anyway. True Blood, Entourage, Weeds, The Wire (When it was on HBO), and Mad Men.

Same thing happened to OZ

I would like to see the FCC do more to make free broadcast TV competitive with cable by censoring basic cable. Not the premium channels, but basic cable. The people who subscribe to cable are not expecting the junk that the TV programmers dream up and force on them.

They do censor basic cable. Have you ever watched Comedy Central? It's a chorus of *bleeps*.

No bailout for these companies. Let them fall. We are in the internet revolution and papers are a dying breed. Let those in power change. Get rid of the old and in with the new.

This is what happens when your company is taken over by trust-fund kids - NYT is an awesome example of this.

I hardly watch TV. If I do its like a said before BBC and Hardball, Coundown and Rachel Maddow. After that I mostly watch the shows I missed on HULU. And then I spend my time on the net...mostly here. I just hardly watch TV nowadays.

Companies are shooting themselves in the foot by getting too big and expanding into areas outside their core businesses.

GE is supposed to make machinery and appliances, not run a TV network.

The Tribune is supposed to report the news, not run a baseball team.

A lot of companies need to be broken into smaller pieces that can focus on the things that made those brands successful years ago.
