Since California voters approved Proposition 8 last month and repealed the right of gay couples to marry, initiative opponents have marched, held rallies and blocked intersections.

On Wednesday, they're asked to do something different: nothing at all.

Modeled loosely after the 2006 immigrant rights demonstrations, "Day Without A Gay" is scheduled for Wednesday and billed as "a nationwide strike and economic boycott" at www.jointheimpact.com, an organizational site for supporters of same-sex marriage.

As a gay-friendly supporter of same-sex marriage, I find the whole "Day Without a Gay" thing as illogical and nonsensical as the "Recycling Black Dollars" movement. Because when it comes to putting back "Black Dollars" into the "Black Community," what's one to do if the "Black Dollars" turned out to be actually mulatto?

well as a californian I noticed nothing different today, went to work, the store, dentist, the mall, and out for dinner and what do you know just like a day without a mexican I did not see any difference, no crippling effect and I work and live in san fran. but as a site manager I did a head count to see who did call in and guess what out of 63 employees no un-excused absents.hmmpf go figure.

How about it? And what kind of "leadership" calls for anyone, in this economy, to "call in sick" on a day like today? Apparently democracy only works when your side wins? The people spoke in the recent election. Get over it.

it is amazing to me that people think that it is ok for the majority to get to decide on minority rights. the constitution is designed to protect minorities from the tyranny of the majority

It's really up to legal scrutiny, legal arguments, and the courts now.

On November 3, 1992, Colorado voters, with a vote of 53.4 percent, enacted the infamous Amendment 2. From Wikipedia and other online sources: "The amendment was drafted and promoted by the organization Colorado for Family Values, and it would have effectively prevented any laws banning discrimination against gays, and thereby nullified gay rights laws that already existed in Aspen, Denver, and Boulder."

Among the appeals/rulings, which went all the way to the SCOTUS (it upheld the unconstitutionality of Amendment 2 by 6-3), was language from the Colorado Supreme Court's 2-1 ruling of July 19, 1993 upholding the original injunction.

I have always remembered the language highlighted in my caps below:

"That Amendment 2 was passed by a majority of voters through the initiative
process as an expression of popular will mandates great deference. However, the
facts remain that "ONE'S RIGHT TO LIFE, LIBERTY, AND PROPERTY. . . AND OTHER
FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS MAY NOT BE SUBMITTED TO VOTE; THEY DEPEND ON THE OUTCOME OF NO ELECTIONS," West Virginia State Bd. of Educ. v. Barnette, 319 U.S.
624, 638 (1943), and that "{A} CITIZEN'S CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS CAN HARDLY BE INFRINGED SIMPLY BECAUSE A MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE CHOOSE THAT IT BE."
Lucas v. Forty-Fourth Gen. Assembly of Colo. , 377 U.S. 713, 736 (1964).

I hope it turns out you're not allowed to violate others' rights just because you want to.

8:15am in my office and guess what? Business as usual. Just like the Day without Immigrants, the impact will be nil.

I am, however, planning on visiting a great Indian restaurant in Hillcrest tonight, since there will undoubtedly be fewer patrons and I can get a table quickly. Hillcrest is a little burrough with a high gay population and great restaurants.

What makes California great is the diversity and acceptance (present company exempt). That's why many Americans who are free from emotional issues, can think critically and appreciate life move there.

I think you, and your neighbors, would be much happier if you moved to Texas. The entire state is filled with people just like you.

American's in California? Really? California is a bastion of illegal immigrants, criminals and socially unacceptable people hiding among other misfits such as themselves.

Ahh, so because I chose to go to work and because I understand the impact of protests like this are minimal, I somehow need to move.

I'll bet if you asked those receiving State assistance if they would want my tax dollars from work, a business and a home to leave the State, my guess would be that they would like me to stay.

Your comments make no sense, but nice try. Have a great day!

2% of the work force not showing up on one day will have no impact on the day to day activities in the US. Protests that show violence and intolerance is not the way toward equal rights. How can someone protesting, shouting, assaulting and insulting people all in the name of tolerance expect to be tolerated themselves?

You've just completely contradicted yourself- unless you intended to completely not make sense.

You say 2% of the workforce not showing up will have no impact, but protests that show violence and intolerance is (are) not the way towards equal rights. ?? Which is it? Do you really mean Gays should just shut the heck up and sit down, so as not to inconvenience people like you and sandiegoconservative who would rather we just go away?

You and your ilk remind us why it's so important to keep speaking up. If Gays are so unworthy of attention, as you'd love us to believe, why bother commenting or spending any energy telling us so?

I work for a company that is very gay friendly and is one of the few companies to make up the gap in cost for benefits between married straight couples and gay couples.

I'm not boycotting them today but my spirit is with those who did.

Likewise. My company has been a staunch supporter of gay rights, offering same-sex partner insurance benefits and even publicly opposing Prop 8. I feel no desire to punish them, but to all my brothers and sisters fighting for equality, I say: Go get 'em! (peacefully, of course)

So there is even a "gay company". What state is it?. I want to visit it in order to reach some conclusions in my research on gays. Thanks
