Dean

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, in politics and elsewhere. And after two straight cycles of congressional pickups, outgoing DNC chair Howard Dean is no longer a boogeyman for his Republican counterparts -- he's a template for success.

This past weekend, a candidate for RNC Chair, Michigan Republican Party Chair Saul Anuzi, said the Grand Old Party would do well to follow the example set by the former Vermont Governor.

"There is a perception that we are a regional party and that we are a party from the South because that's the region we're consistently winning today," Anuzis told Politico. "I do think we need to have our version of the 50-state program that [Democratic National Committee Chair Howard] Dean had."

This prescription came days after Karl Rove, the architect of the current Republican Party, made a similar plea of his own. Noting incredible margins that Barack Obama had among black and Latino voters, the former Bush strategist -- appearing at a debate on the Bush legacy in New York -- said the GOP had to "be a party governing all Americans... It can only do that by making the case to African American and Latinos."

Implicit within these critiques is the notion that Republicans have become regionalized -- overly reliant on strong turnout among white working class voters, primarily below the Mason-Dixon line. In this context, Dean's vision of building infrastructure across the electoral map -- which, it should be noted, was initially taken from the GOP -- makes sense for the current Republican Party. Why cede the entire New England House delegation when, at the very least, they could force the DCCC to spend resources defending those seats?

But the sticking point, as one DNC staffer argues, is ideology. Putting together institutions to make gains in non-Republican regions only will help if the party has a political message that can resonate among non-conservatives.

"By relying on wedge issues to win, they've used issues to divide people and worked to appeal to an increasingly smaller group of people," said the aide. "Dean's point has not just been that we need to show up in all 50-states but also that as a party we need to ask people for their votes, listen to what they have to say and be willing to work to solve issues in areas where we have common ground, even if we don't agree with everything."

Part of that is simply showing up. The leading Republican presidential candidates this cycle famously shunned an African-American themed debate, much to the chagrin of moderates like Jack Kemp, who worried that the party had become too country club. The handling of immigration reform and other related issues, meanwhile, has led students of the political process -- like NDN Simon's Rosenberg -- to seriously consider the idea that Democrats will have a generational lock on the growing minority vote.

Finally, there is the age gap. Rove, appearing in New York, lamented the fact that young voters had abandoned the Republican Party, many driven by anger towards the Iraq War. This may be true, but it is also incomplete. The problem, the DNC aide said, is more systemic.

"Look at the voting habits of under 30 voters," she said. "they are more multicultural and less partisan, they want to be inspired, not lectured to and not manipulated in the way that Rove has used "anger points" to manipulate voters. Those voters are the future of our party, and the GOP doesn't seem to be speaking to them at all. So just because they show up in all 50 states, if they don't understand the voters they are trying to reach, it won't improve their electoral chances."

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, in politics and elsewhere. And after two straight cycles of congressional pickups, outgoing DNC chair Howard Dean is no longer a boogeyman for his Republic...

I wonder why, other than outright corruption and lawlessness that the Repubs did so badly. If you do not count the fact that they have openly demonized hispanics, blacks, gays, and women who believe in controlling the destinies of their own bodies there is no reason that they could not have won. They publicly promote hate as a platform and still wonder why they cannot get certain votes. Go figure.

In his Oxford-style debate, recently, Rove, indeed, did call for the party to take its message to African-Americans and Latinos. I note, nevertheless, that he failed to include pro-choice and gay voters. The GOP used to enjoy electoral success by following the traditions of representing only white, straight, anti-choice voters; that demographic now seems only to reside in the south, and the Deep South at that. Maybe god chose to send Katrina to punish GOP policy, not liberal, gay lifestyles. (I had to say this because it mirrors what some Christian right preachers claimed. Since I am an atheist, Katrina was caused by that uncontrollable force, Nature!

I hear Dean is unemployed since Obama and his Chicago gang dumped him and the 50 state strategy. What we really need is a third party. Republicans and Democrats are corrupt and need to go.

A third political party will not be successful in the U.S. Our country was set up so that there would be a ruling class. At this point the two major political parties have the power that they can keep out a third.

The two parties now control media access of candidates, and the majority of Americans make decisions on who they will vote for based on what they see on TV. In addition, a third party could not mount a funding drive sufficient to compete with the two major politcal parties.

To understand the reality of our system, I would suggest you read "The Irony of Democracy" by Dye & Ziegler. You can find it used (cheap!) online. Many political science classes that have a critical-thinking emphasis use this book.

It will change forever how you look at politics, our founding fathers, and the realities of the political system we have.

P.S. The one thing third parties are really good for is to force, during the campaign, the two major parties to talk about issues they wouldn't normally want to talk about. Except this year...this year the third-party candidates were totally shut out of the campaign process. And i wasn't by accident, either.

Perhaps the GOP will become increasingly irrelevant and open the door for a new party. I think that internet will eventually change the dynamics of the two party system. It's a variable that neither historians nor the founding fathers could have anticipated.

Never mind a 50-state strategy. How about a two-gender strategy? Maybe if the GOP had something in mind for women besides rescuing us from our misguided desire to be fully enfranchised citizens they'd start getting somewhere. (Sorry, guys. Sarah Palin was worse than ineffectual in getting our vote. She was a gross insult.)

I think the GOP has got to face facts and realize that a revolution of some sort has begun.

Wake up GOP!!! Fear-mongering and character-assassination are passe. This will be the last million you make off the backs of the middle-class. The economy will not run without the middle-class. An agenda of pulling-up-your own-boot-strap legislation and reduced government will create chaos in this country and will not save a home or put food on the table.

The key to Dean's and the DNC's success was simply the (correct) belief that the country is "democratic". Dean said if we just made it clear to voters what we stand for, we would get their votes. The problem is ideology and the perception of what each party stands for. The GOP's "message" is tainted and they simply do not speak to most of America.

The Republicans just don't get it. Amazing.

They still think the country is one big board game, and all that's needed is a new strategy on how to move the tokens around the board. ("How to manipulate this ethnicity, this region, this demographic into our court?") And they have yet to figure out that it's no longer enough to simply build a case *against* Democrats. In order for these tactics to be effective, the Republicans need to actually stand for something. Anything.

The Republicans had a good run on oogedy-boogedy demogoguery, but people are sick and tired of being scared. It's time to retire the Atwater & Rove gimmicks and the zealot candidates and seek, instead, a return to some semblence of the sort of principles, ethics and ideals it takes to actually govern a country.

A 50-state strategy will never work for the GOP while its still dominated by southern evangelicals. The chief problem with Republicans today is that they are so tied to ideology as opposed to pragmatism or moderation.

Unless you're a fire-breathing conservative, you have virtually no chance to advance in the national party. The southern voting block can veto any moderate agenda, so any moderates will be more likely to be independents or become Democrats. The problem with Republicans isn't that they don't have a 50-state strategy, its that their very core ideology is flat out wrong. They need to let go of Reagan and understand that ideas that worked in the 80s are very out of date.

Katrina showed that there is a role for Government so the idea that Government is bad is no longer valid.
The crash of the Financial system showed that deregulation is bad.
The war in Iraq has shown that hawkish-militaristic foreign policy simply doesn't work.
The "Drill baby drill" mantra is only valid amongst core Republicans. Center-Right and left are all in favor of Green energy.
Most Americans want universal health care--they may disagree on the methodology of providing it but the concept that the Government should have a role in health care is favored.

The so called "liberal" ideas are now centrist so the Republican ideas are now more right wing and radical. Until the party as a whole moderates substantially, they will find their base shrinking.

If Rove is such a genius, how come he didn't see this train coming while he was standing on the tracks? He has almost single handidly destroyed the Republican party. Their only message is hate and fear.
