I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Dean

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, in politics and elsewhere. And after two straight cycles of congressional pickups, outgoing DNC chair Howard Dean is no longer a boogeyman for his Republican counterparts -- he's a template for success.

This past weekend, a candidate for RNC Chair, Michigan Republican Party Chair Saul Anuzi, said the Grand Old Party would do well to follow the example set by the former Vermont Governor.

"There is a perception that we are a regional party and that we are a party from the South because that's the region we're consistently winning today," Anuzis told Politico. "I do think we need to have our version of the 50-state program that [Democratic National Committee Chair Howard] Dean had."

This prescription came days after Karl Rove, the architect of the current Republican Party, made a similar plea of his own. Noting incredible margins that Barack Obama had among black and Latino voters, the former Bush strategist -- appearing at a debate on the Bush legacy in New York -- said the GOP had to "be a party governing all Americans... It can only do that by making the case to African American and Latinos."

Implicit within these critiques is the notion that Republicans have become regionalized -- overly reliant on strong turnout among white working class voters, primarily below the Mason-Dixon line. In this context, Dean's vision of building infrastructure across the electoral map -- which, it should be noted, was initially taken from the GOP -- makes sense for the current Republican Party. Why cede the entire New England House delegation when, at the very least, they could force the DCCC to spend resources defending those seats?

But the sticking point, as one DNC staffer argues, is ideology. Putting together institutions to make gains in non-Republican regions only will help if the party has a political message that can resonate among non-conservatives.

"By relying on wedge issues to win, they've used issues to divide people and worked to appeal to an increasingly smaller group of people," said the aide. "Dean's point has not just been that we need to show up in all 50-states but also that as a party we need to ask people for their votes, listen to what they have to say and be willing to work to solve issues in areas where we have common ground, even if we don't agree with everything."

Part of that is simply showing up. The leading Republican presidential candidates this cycle famously shunned an African-American themed debate, much to the chagrin of moderates like Jack Kemp, who worried that the party had become too country club. The handling of immigration reform and other related issues, meanwhile, has led students of the political process -- like NDN Simon's Rosenberg -- to seriously consider the idea that Democrats will have a generational lock on the growing minority vote.

Finally, there is the age gap. Rove, appearing in New York, lamented the fact that young voters had abandoned the Republican Party, many driven by anger towards the Iraq War. This may be true, but it is also incomplete. The problem, the DNC aide said, is more systemic.

"Look at the voting habits of under 30 voters," she said. "they are more multicultural and less partisan, they want to be inspired, not lectured to and not manipulated in the way that Rove has used "anger points" to manipulate voters. Those voters are the future of our party, and the GOP doesn't seem to be speaking to them at all. So just because they show up in all 50 states, if they don't understand the voters they are trying to reach, it won't improve their electoral chances."

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, in politics and elsewhere. And after two straight cycles of congressional pickups, outgoing DNC chair Howard Dean is no longer a boogeyman for his Republic...

To any GOPer who might be reading this, I have a couple of questions for you:

1) Were you A. in favor of the Wall Street "bailout", or B. opposed to it?

2) Are you in favor of an oversight group that would prevent these "bailout" funds from being used to pay CEO bonuses or salaries?

Now, regardless of whether you chose A. or B. to question 1), if you answered YES to question 2), I'd like for you to provide me with one good reason why a single (unnamed per his request) Republican legislator should be allowed to hold up the appointment of the final member of that oversight group, it's chairperson?

Now, if I were a Republican (which I'm not - I'm a GDI), and I had opposed this "bailout" (which I DID), I'd certainly want to know WHY an anonymous member of my own party is not working in MY best interests. Can ANYONE explain that to me?

I was against the bail out. I do not think ceo's should get any money from the bail out period. I don't like that Raines got over $100million dollars in bonus while Fannie and Freddie was going off a cliff and I don't like that Maxine Waters said anyone that tries to slow it down is a racist.

I do not know enough about the the hold out you speak of, but I will say that after watching Chairpersons Dodd and Frank give statement after statement that Fannie/Freddie was good and solvent and doing what it was meant to - and hearing about chairperson Rangel dodging taxes and all - well thank God the same people aren't appointing this new chairperson.

"I do not know enough about the hold out you speak of...blah, deflect, point finger, blah, deflect, point finger..."

You should have stopped at "enough" skippy.

Find out, THEN get back to me.

Rove: the GOP had to "be a party governing all Americans... It can only do that by making the case to African American and Latinos."

It won't work! Lie, use religion, scare, or/and cheat...it still won't work. Make the case to Asian Americans, Latinos, African Americans ,Native Americans, European Americans, etc. Make the case to all Americans then maybe.

Rove was in Sweden this summer to consult the gorvernment on 'health care' and other issues:

See the Democracy Now website for today's progarm for more:

"We have a prime minister who in the 1990s wrote a book, The Sleeping People, where he said that the welfare state should only prevent starvation, nothing beyond that, no other standard should be guaranteed. After being elected, Fredrik Reinfeldt, one of his first major visits abroad was to George Bush in the White House, this in spite of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, a visit that many people thought shouldn’t have happened, his coalition then getting—bringing over Karl Rove for advice and support—Karl Rove, the architect of President Bush’s electoral victories."

it won't matter what the republicans try to steal from the Democrats they will still suck -- everything they stand for is so damn undemocratic, racist, sexist, homophobic, jingositic, irrational, idiotic and down right irrelevant.

Instead of actually changing the party they will just lie to people that they have changed.
Then once they get into office it will be business as usual.

The only way for the GOP to come back is if they completely revamp the party. This means ALL new blood...no Fred Thompson's, Newt Gingrich's, Sean Hannity's....it won't happen due to the stuborness of the leadership. Face it guys, you ideas, ideals, and what you think is right, is long over.

The party of hate and exclusivity will first have to learn to be HUMAN before all else. They simply don't like people.

Don't hold your breath for a change. Remember they hate CHANGE.

When they finally stop crying the GOP will fragment and become 2 , maybe 3 different factions - each battling for the traditional brand name.

As has been said before - THERE WILL BE BLOOD.

The G.O.P. is basically done. KAPUT. Going the way of the Bull Moose party or the Whigs. There is no more base. Even the evangelicals are split. What you have left is a completely fractious group of people that have nothing left to identify with. And their "dear leader" Sarah Palin is supposed to be the savior, of the so-called base. A very loosely afilliated group of intellectually challanged yahoos. That's what's left of the G.O.P!

Thanks to Karl, the Republican Brand just may reach Whig Party status . . . one can only HOPE.

Gee, everything about the GOP screams exclusive, no Blacks, Latino's at least in their neighborhoods, no gays, unless your a Republican in the closet like Larry Craig, no women, unless your Sarah P. and help the old boys get the flag up the pole!! White, evangelical, Southern men, now thats the stuff that made Dixie shine from 1860 to 1864!!!

Is it some kind of crime to be Christian, white, and from the South? I mean this whole post is just chock full of generalizations, the types of which anywhere else would be deemed racist/offensive.
Seems nowadays to be anyone of the three subjects one to an open season of insults. I thought or was lead to believe we are in the midst of some kind of social transformation with the election of Obama and I'm feeling quite alienated due to geography, belief, and skin color.

The man hasn't even assumed the office yet. Let's wait and see what happens when he does.

I, too, am from the South, but I am a Native American of the Pagan faith. I am tired of Christians shoving their religion down my throat (particularly during Christmas time), and I am especially tired of dealing with racism from the dominant white populace surrounding me. Therefore, excuse me for not having bunches of sympathy for Southern, white Christians. You guys have been on a gravy train for a long, long time now, but it's time to move over and let others ride for awhile. You'll be just fine, so don't worry about it so much. If this is any solace, you will never have to endure the suffering that your people inflicted upon my people and other minorities over the centuries. What little discomfort that you may experience from Democratic Party rule will be miniscule by comparison.

I know that it hurts to lose that most coveted of all things called power, but that's the way it is. Get on the new train, get out of the way, or get run over, my friend.

Not that I'm aware of drvck. I think you can still worship in the church of your choice. There is some controversy about whether you can move the church of your choice to government property on holidays, even if your sect of Christianity is the local majority, Guns & hunting? You got 'em. So do people North, Midwest & West. Heck, I don't live South and can get all the hand guns I want just looking for what folks leave under the theater seats at the local multi-plex. Whites don't seem under represented in politics, including Southern White Chrisitans. You've got some pluses, like not shoveling as much snow & your pan fish are bigger. If you vote GOP you may be a bit disoriented and lonely for a while. Especially if you are an older white male watching cultural norms shift under your feet. That happens up North & West too. Buck up pal. Southern white Christians are doctors, engineers, businessmen, scientists & soldiers. We of other regions don't think you're any dumber, or more intolerant than we are. You're just different. To paraphrase the philosopher Bart Simpson, it's not the stupid little regional differences between us that are important, it is the big stupid regional similarities. You'll always have Fox News.

Don't forget what party put in Condi Rice, Clarence Thomas, Colin Powell, a VP with a gay daughter, Alberto Gonzales, and many many more. Oh - and ended slavery too.

Maybe they don't count because they are "republican women and minorities"? Maybe what you should say is I am bigoted against anyone that is not a liberal democrat that thinks just like me?

Sounds kind of like those "southern men" huh?

Puppets, whose only purpose are to have their credibility completely destroyed by the white men at the top.

The only thing Powell will be remembered for his speech of fabrications justifying the Iraq War to the UN. Rice will be remembered as the worst NSA (9/11 happened on her watch) and Sec. of State (Israel-Labanon war happened) ever. Gonzo is shopping his resume around. Thomas sits quietly as the intelligent justices thoughtfully analyze the most important legal cases of our day. Thurgood Marshall he isn't.

Seriously, do you have a point?

Can we say that this VP was put in (actually he put himself in) DESPITE he had a gay daughter (a fact that he tried to hide the best he could, if I'm not mistaken)? Or rather, can we say that the liability of the gayness of the daughter paled in comparison to all of the VP's great assets that he brought...?

Ended slavery ? are you comparing the party of Lincoln, the republican party of 1860 to this rabble of thugs and segregationist who call themselves 'republicans' today? These people migrated from the democratic party in the 60s, 70s and 80s; in response to the racist appeals of nixon and reagan. They are "southern democrats" dressed in republican feathers. Any one who has lived long enough or at least read some contemporary history of america can tell you what the term "southern democrat" means

Dick Cheney was so proud of his gay daughter that he got offended when John Edwards brought her up in the VP debate. Her partner wasn't even in the official Cheney family portrait. You could only name 3 african americans and one hispanic american. That doesn't represent diversity. How many republicans congress people are minorities? There is not one black or asian republican in the US Congress. There are 4 hispanic republicans in The House, and 1 in the senate. That is not diversity.
