CHICAGO — An embarrassed Oprah Winfrey says she's "fallen off the wagon" of healthy living and has ballooned to 200 pounds.

In January's "O" magazine, Winfrey, 54, details her recent struggles with an out-of-balance thyroid and how the condition made her develop "a fear of working out." She says she's gained 40 pounds since 2006, when she weighed 160.

"I look at my thinner self and think, `How did I let this happen again?'" the talk-show queen says in the article provided early to The Associated Press by Harpo Productions.

"I'm embarrassed," she says. "I'm mad at myself."

Winfrey's weight and height put her body mass index at 31.8, which is obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC says people who are obese are at higher risk for chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol.

Winfrey says she's abandoned trying to get thin. She just wants to be strong, healthy and fit. She hopes to get started with her upcoming "Best Life Week," starting Jan. 5 with an episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" during which she is expected to talk candidly about her weight.

Winfrey famously wheeled a wagon loaded with fat onto the set of her talk show in 1988 to represent a 67-pound weight loss while wearing a pair of size 10 Calvin Klein jeans. She had lost the weight with a liquid protein diet.

"When it comes to maintaining my health I didn't just fall off the wagon. I let the wagon fall on me," the chairwoman of Harpo Inc. writes. "I didn't follow my own fundamental rule of taking care of self first."

In 2005, Winfrey said she starved herself for four months to lose weight. Ever since, her weight has yo-yoed. She weighed as much as 237 pounds and by late 1990 acknowledged she had regained most of the 67 pounds, saying "I'll never diet again."

In 1993, she hired personal trainer Bob Greene and the next year finished the Marine Corps Marathon. By 1996 she said her roller-coaster weight saga was over.

But now, Winfrey finds herself tipping the scales again, telling AP Television last week that she has yet to choose a gown for President-elect Barack Obama's inaugural ball next month.

"I had a dress on the vision board, but I'm not sure that's gonna fit," Winfrey said. "So I have to work on something else."

I'd like to say that I've been diagnosed with hypothyroidism for several years now. I take synthroid daily.
I was over 200 pounds when I asked my thyroid doctor (endocrinologist) for some diet pills. Then I asked him if my thyroid were to blame for my being fat. He informed me that diet pills were dangerous which I already knew, I was just desperate. He also told me that THYROID DISORDER ONLY ACCOUNTS FOR SIX (6) POUNDS OF WEIGHT GAIN PERIOD! So that means I was fat because I was eating my a$$ off an not exercising. He sent me to a dietician and I lost 50 pounds (DIET AND EXERCISE). I kept it off for two years but only to gain 40 pounds back. Why? Because I started eating my a$$ off again and quit exercising.
One thing you need to do is be truthful with yourself. I know what makes me gain and what makes me lose. It's a matter of SELF-DISCIPLINE! WE WANT TO HAVE OUR CAKE AND EAT IT TO!

You may have a point; however, a sluggish thyroid does lead to tiredness, anemia, and mood swings. A person dealing with these symptoms untreated is likely to be unwilling or even unable to work out... and may eat for comfort.

Please don't oversimplify thyroid disorders just because you were able to get yours diagnosed and could afford (!) a nutritionist. Some of us out here are still struggling a lot. I also have a 7-year-old daughter with hypothyroidism who has excess weight & tiredness despite being on Synthroid for a year. It's not as easy as you make it sound.

Over the past year I lost 35 pounds on Weight Watchers, then gained it all back. I thoguht to myself there's got to be a solution to this, given that I was so determined and enjoying my weght loss so much. What was going on!!!???

Having read quite a bit and tried some of it out, I see it's all in your hormones, some of which you never even heard about--like Leptin, the one that regulates appetite.

Also you might look into the relationship between sleep deprivation and eating carbohydrates.

The book Mastering Leptin (and the newer Leptin Diet Book--with no recipes, BTW) will give you five rules (plus long enough sleep and resorative exercise) that will cure the cravings once and for all.

Check out the reviews on Amazon.

This is my good deed for the day.

She does not have anything to be ashamed or embarrassed about. Weight loss is hard to maintain. It is easier to lose than to keep it off once you do. It will come off and she'll feel better.
I think she looks good, regardless.

I have hypothyroidism and take levothyroxin, a generic for synthyroid. I have to have a blood test each and every year to be sure that I am properly prescribed for the strength that I need. I have lost 5 pounds but I am still about 15 pounds over weight, and have been eating more vegetables, raw and cooked. I eat fresh fruit in the mornings and limit my portions. I take Juice Plus+ capsules every day which are fruits and vegetables. I feel great! I work out with weights twice a week at the gym and I walk about 3 times a week for 30-40 minutes. I like food too but do not want to have the diseases that go with having too much omentum. I try to practice "moderacy in all things" and not give in to my sweet tooth urges. I wish Oprah good luck with her journey.

I like Oprah but on the thyroid thing she is presenting misinformation. On her show she actually blamed women for getting thyroid disorders and acted like they "brought it on themselves" somehow. Then she said she just went to Hawaii and chilled out and it all got magically fixed. No pills, no radioactive iodine treatment, nothing.

I have Graves Disease. I got the radioactive iodine treatment which kills your thyroid. Now I take pills to replace the thyroid levels and I am perfectly fine. What is Oprah talking about-- "fear of working out"?

She and Dr. Oz need to explain clearly what Graves Disease is and how it is MEDICALLY treated!!

Oprah, Oprah, Oprah! You are one of the most admired women in the world! Lose weight if you want to, but don't tie it into shame or embarrassment. You can afford to have the most flattering dress created for you, for the Inaugural. Just enjoy the moment!

You need therapy. Seriously. Oprah did not put Obama in the white house.

He actually got there on merit, not his color, by the way.

We're talking about Oprah's WEIGHT problem. Wake up.

Oprah like so many of us is a product of our environment and what we eat. I experienced the same challenges with weight gain over the years. I would lose it and then the pounds would come back and then some. All that changed when I found nutritional cleansing -- a 21st Century take on the ancient wisdom of cleaning out our body's filters, while simultaneously flooding the body with high-grade nutrients so that our body can clean house and regenerate tissues.
This really works and I am astounded at how much better my health is. My energy is through the roof! My skin is beautiful! I sleep through the night now after years of challenges. I also released 40 pounds and 5 dress sizes and have kept it off!
This is the greatest gift to the world and I hope everyone that is passionate about better health, including Oprah, discover this amazing, easy and inexpensive way to eat and live healthy.
Those of you that want to take responsibilty for your health should go to this website

Oprah like so many of us, deserve better health and energy -- she like so many has worked hard an helped many many other people. We all deserve this.
Food matters as does internal cleansing. Our world has become a toxic place. Science has shown that the body copes with these toxic impurities by coating them with FAT and Water to protect our internal organs.

It was the fact that she was honest about it from day one. She took something that was a huge negative in television (being overweight) and through a combination of humour, empathy & honesty, brilliantly used it to bond with millions of women.

297 pounds + 100 pounds ecstasy due to Barack winning = 397 pounds

Oprah had gotten her weight under control with diet and exercise, as can be seen in the pictures of her from 2006 and early 2007. But that changed when she revealed she'd "blown out her thyroid."

Controversially, Oprah suggested that she had used diet and stress reduction as her thyroid treatment, and her diet was emphasizing soy products (antithyroid goitrogens which are known to worsen thyroid conditions in some people.) Winfrey did her show with Dr. Christiane Northrup, and controversially signed onto Northrup's claim that thyroid problems develop in women due to an energy blockage in the throat , as a result of a lifetime of a woman's 'swallowing' words she wants to express. Back in May 08, Winfrey went on a several week vegan "cleanse," but the diet included daily servings of thyroid-damaging foods like tofu, tempeh, soy milk and soy yogurt daily. She didn't lose weight.

Coverage of Oprah's thyroid issues is online at http://thyroid.about.com and a summary of all the Oprah-related coverage is online at:
http://thyroid.about.com/od/oprahsthyroidproblem/Oprah_Winfreys_Thyroid_Condition_Background_Information_Articles.htm

Bottom line: if you have a thyroid condition, and you don't get proper diagnosis and treatment for the condition, then your diet is destined to fail.

A critical first step for Oprah is sound thyroid advice, and proper thyroid treatment.

A critical first step for Oprah is moderation in what she eats and exercise-period! She's overweight due to overeating and beind sedentary-period! Stop making excuses for her, that won't help.

I really hope too many people don't rip her for this. I guarantee the overwhelming number of people who have lost weight in the past, gain it back. She is no different. I think it's good of her to come out and say something about it. She's aware of the issue and so so so many other people who have lost weight in the past are in the same position now.

Don't be so hard on her. This is a hard thing to manage. It's not like alcoholism, where you can just cut alcohol completely out of your life. Food addiction is much tougher, because you still HAVE to eat every single day. It's harder to manage and control. I feel for her. I've gone through the same thing many times.
