"Fox & Friends" Explain Formula For Success: "You Don't See Us Screwing Around" When News Is Serious
New York Daily News:
Brian Kilmeade says what makes Fox News Channel's "Fox & Friends" work each day is that it easily bounces between silly and serious.
"I think we're looser, and at the same time, we realize at any moment something can change," says Kilmeade, one of three co-hosts. "Something can blow up. Someone could die, and when that happens, viewers don't want to turn on comics."
Whatever the formula, it's working. Kilmeade, along with Steve Doocy and Gretchen Carlson, averaged 1.2 million viewers in November, according to the Nielsen ratings, more than CNN's "American Morning," which averaged 683,000 viewers and MSNBC's "Morning Joe," with 604,000.
The important part, Kilmeade adds, is knowing when to crank up the laughs - or drill down deep into news. "When this bailout bombed out, you didn't see a lot of fun on the show," he says. "People are concerned about 401k's. You don't see us screwing around."
