I Like ItI Don’t Like It

With major newspapers companies in turmoil, Jon Stewart dedicated his "Clusterf#@k to the Poor House" segment to newspapers.

"What's black and white and completely over?" he joked. "Give up? It's newspapers."

Stewart dramatically declared that "THE INTERNET!" — specifically Craigslist — has brought about the industry's demise.

"Online ads are cheaper, they receive wider distribution, and, perhaps most importantly, many newspapers still stubbornly refuse to post classified ads like, '57 Year Old Man looking for No-Strings-Attached Shemale Scat Gang Bang."

The NY Times endorsed Hillary and McCain.... that's how out of touch they are.

Well, McCain got 49 percent of the vote, Hillary is Secretary of State and the Clintonistas are running the White House. Plus, as a newspaper, you endorse a candidate because you think he or she is right on the issues. Its not a bet on who is gonna win.

There is an economic global crisis, war, strife,..... NY Times puts Jay Leno on the front page. A news story carried by every one. No news really. NY Times has become the new LA Times.

Huh? What planet are you reading from?
If it's soooooo "right-leaning", how come it was criticized by some ON THE RIGHT during the election and was lumped into that "elitist" category?

The cirticism is a distraction....You've forgotten they supported the Iraq war, hired Krystol and have Friedman on staff...it's always been propaganda for the right passing as liberal.

They always need a scapegoat for their failures. They never own up to their mistakes. After they got destroyed in the election they didn't acknowledge its their philosophy that America rejected. Then they preceded to take a harder right, putting Huckabee, Romney, Jindal, and Palin as the head's of the party. Mccain was the symbol of a more moderate Republican party.

I still like getting a daily paper. The Times thinks I'm a law professor for some reason, so my subscription is real cheap. I can take it with me into the bathroom, and the puppy can pee and poop on its illustrious pages.

I don't think the problem is readership. I think no one is advertising. Times are tough. I know I get a lot more ads over the internet than ever before. It doesn't cost anything to email.

Newspapers will be over...but newspaper sites will still exist..either we will go to washingtonpost.com or Huffingtonpost.com..Huffingtonpost will probably have to pay more for membership with these paper sites...as long as there is bad news there is news..none report good news.

If newspapers go out of business where are websites like this one going to get their material? What are the host of all those morning shows going to do with all that airtime? If u r one of those people who watches those programs you know that all they do is sit there and read the newspapers back to their audience. Websites and TV networks all benefit from the grunt work that is done at newspapers. Real journalism takes time and money! Having real journalist out there working at newspapers allows website and TV the financial benefit of not having to actually send someone to Darfur to get first hand info on whats happening there. If black and white newspapers go belly up then we really will be an ignorant country!

I completely agree. There will be some sort of hybrid because we still need reporters on the ground breaking the stories. I for one hope they weather the storm and at the end of it have a more streamlined business model. I still love reading the paper on the weekends and during my commute to NYC. I feel like as long as folks have to schlep on public transportation (the wave of the future if we continue to go in the green direction) there will be a need for tangible news.

I stopped buying the Des Moines Register-I put up with this Lib Rag for years-but after this election-said enough is enough. This paper turns off half of it's potential readers(the conservative side) but they just don't get it. Pushing an agenda is more important than surviving. Alot more Libs lose their jobs than Conserves do when papers close down!

Hmmmmm, methinks Daniboy is getting his 'left" and "right" confused.

The last election was the final straw for most people. The newspapers sold their soul to get BHO elected. No one in their right mind trusts the dishonest newspapers anymore. Now that it's over I will say that not only did the printed press actually campaign for Obama, but they were his partisan attack dogs as well.

Never seen anything like it.

Yes, because they did such a bang up job of deep investigative reporting on the lead up on the Iraq War that the vast majority of Americans actually thought there were Iraqis on the planes on 9-11. But it's only now that Obama gets elected after all those lies failed to culminate into victory and that lack of definitive victory of a prolonged war has led our economy into the crapper that it''s the media's fault. They shouldn't have told us all about the banks going under or the houses being seized or that the wars are still not over and we have no definitive plans to make it so. That only fuelled negativity. Telling the truth to Americans? No, we can't handle the truth. We must believe that everything Bush touched smelled of roses and dewdrops and look like unicorns and rainbows and tasted like cotton candy. Yes, that's it, blame the media. The world's it skippity doo-dah shape so why turn away from the party that brought us this paradise on Earth. Hey Joe, let us know if you ever re-enter reality.

Newspapers are not failing because of their "Liberal Bias" they are failing because it is an out of date business model in a world with thousands of opitions for news gathering and community development. No one needs to pay $45 for a Yard Sale Ad in the print paper when they can post of CL for free.

The actual delivery of newspapers is the most important link from the publisher to the customer.

Recently I thought I'd try to help our flagging local Seattle Times/PI by taking out a subscription.

I actually tried twice.

Didn't get the actual papers delivered either time and finally told them to take me off their call list.

So morning coffee with my 'virtual' newspapers is reliable, cost-effective, and less stuff to recycle.

No question, the daily paper is in trouble. I will miss it. After all, there has never been a better material for starting a fire...in my fireplaces...or, until recently, my mind.
