I Like ItI Don’t Like It

With major newspapers companies in turmoil, Jon Stewart dedicated his "Clusterf#@k to the Poor House" segment to newspapers.

"What's black and white and completely over?" he joked. "Give up? It's newspapers."

Stewart dramatically declared that "THE INTERNET!" — specifically Craigslist — has brought about the industry's demise.

"Online ads are cheaper, they receive wider distribution, and, perhaps most importantly, many newspapers still stubbornly refuse to post classified ads like, '57 Year Old Man looking for No-Strings-Attached Shemale Scat Gang Bang."

If all the newspapers do go belly up well then we are all screwed! If you watch most morning programs the host basically just sit there and read the newspapers back to their audience! If you go to the average website like this one and click on a story, source of that story will most likely be a black and white newspaper. I like John Stewart but if newspapers go the way of the dodo bird sites like the Huffpost, Townhall and the Daily Beast would be close behind because they would have no material to draw on. Real journalism takes money. It takes money to send a reporter to Darfur to give a first person account of what his happening there. Websites like this one and TV networks benefit (unfairly in my opinion) from the real grunt work that is do at newspapers! For all our sakes lets hope that Mr. Stewart is wrong!

Newspapers currently may not be green,
but they are our tradition. Newspapers are still the best form of communication
for most people. We need to support our "papers" and help figure out
a new, green format, that people will support-

Newsprint is probably the most recycled item on the planet. No, wait,!it's the news itself that is the most recycled item on the planet!

The loss of a permanent medium in which news is printed will lead (and already is leading to) much more sloppy news reporting. When reporters know that an incorrect fact can be changed with a keystroke, they're much less likely to vet their sources and do any fact-checking. It's a fact: print news is more trustworthy and when you're not against a minute by minute deadline to get the story online first, the reader tends to get more reliable information.

Newspapers are dying? Their websites have viewerships in the millions! He needs to specifiy PRINT component, and even then there are diehards who will always love the print version with breakfast.

What is dying is local television news. News highlights? Check your newspaper website 24/7. Weather? Check weather.com 24/7. Sports? Get the picture? espn.com 24/7.

Newspapers are just going to have to adjust. Local tv news, radio (cd, Ipods, etc) are what is dead. Even comedy can be accessed on the internet. Why watch cable as much as you used to?

Sorry Jon. You have lost your edge.

I believe Jon and others who have voiced the same sentiments are correct. NewsPAPERS are going extinct. What you will have are online new sites that will be owned by their media company.

When I log onto my local newsPAPER's website, I'm not picking up a newsPAPER or paying for a newsPAPER. The decline in subscriptions and purchases for PRINT advertisements are why newsPAPERs are going extinct.

Local news will always be needed, be it by television or online. A revenue generating website cannot save the dinosaur that is printing and distributing newspapers.

It can't save the American newsroom, either. So far, newspaper advertising revenues on line don't come close to paying for real news operations. The internet news has been entirely subsidized by the print operation.
And let's face it, television news is a bad joke.

Wrong.....some days he is better than others but he still tells it like it is when it's critical....Jon's comments are supposed to be a humorous slant...unlike Sean Hannity who should really get over his chronic PMS tantrums and get off the air...he is useless

Newspapers are not very green; isn't this a good thing?? My local paper has gone up in price so dramatically, I think I have bought it for the last time...

Agreed. Stewart and his show have lost their edge and his level of insight and commentary peaked a couple years ago. Colbert has eclipsed him and shows no signs of slowing down. Sorry man, just the truth.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:38 AM on 12/10/2008

As much as I love Colbert - politically, Colbert's the flashy pretty boy you play around with. Stewart is the one you take home to mama and settle down with. There is no eclipse. They both do two entirely different shticks for the same ends. Can't get enough of either one of them.

And without them, the political landscape would be very bleak instead. How quickly we forget the days when their voices seemed to be the only ones expressing their sarcastic dissent and how they dared to challenge the status quo. And lest you think I feel Colbert is all flash and no substance, I will never forget his daring 2006 F You to Bush at the White House Correspondent's Dinner (it's one of my favorite Wikipedia bedtime stories when I can't sleep for thinking about sh*t like governor's trying to sell Senate seats) or his bowed head and the tears he would not show when Obama became President Elect and he and Stewart realized that their work had truly not been in vain.

I know American are a fickle bunch. But to turn on Colbert and Stewart at this point in the game is just....wrong....and sad...on levels I cannot comprehend.

They shouldn't have to be funny to get us to give a damn about our Democratic Republic. It's a damn shame that only their brutally intellectual and stunningly presented dog and pony show may have just saved us all.

he lost his edge? did you see his interview with Mike Huckabee immediately after this clip? He pressed him so hard on gay marriage I thought Huckabee might actually crack! That alone was edgier than anything the so-called news networks have presented in ages....

Thats the difference. Colbert is still doing satire. Years ago The Daily Show changed into essentially a hard news show with a laugh track. Stewart's 'fake news' offers as much substance as the 'real' news.

THANK YOU! i was about to hit "reply" with these same words before i saw you did. he was AMAZING with huckabee. NO ONE presses that hard, to try to get to the underlying reasons someone like huckabee has for these views they have. i wanted to kiss jon...more than i usually do, of course.

I very much enjoyed seeing Huckabee SO UNCOMFORTABLE last night....I was waiting for him to get up and walk off but Jon is very gracious and smoothed it all over....Keep up the good work John!

Your Sh*ts Weak! lol.

Seriously his interview with Huck was the best ive seen in a while. Stewart is great at pressing the hardasses when they want to get their book pushed, he pushes them a little.

Colbert is a joke. Stewart is actually the only commentator to ask the questions needed. He should have been the one to grill Palin on her first interview instead of Charlie "Softball" Gibson.

I'll always read a newspaper. Not too easy to bring the Internet in the bathroom or on a train or on vacation by a pool. They'll always be a need. The death of the newspaper is greatly exaggerated.

Sad but true. I will miss the convenience of paper when on the move, but other than that, I get more news from more sources quicker than ever before. I was a newspaper person from my first job until way late in my career and have some very fond memories of the "good old days"...

Sorry, Kreoth, you are dead wrong and apparently lack a sense of humor. Jon Stewart is one of the greatest American comics of them all, a major talent, and he is now at the top of his game. His writers know exactly how to tailor his material for him, his face is malleable into thousands of expressions, his delivery is spot on, and his comic timing is impeccable. He gets laughs out of silence, he is not afraid to make himself look ridiculous, and his interviews are penetrating without being insulting to his guests (with a few wondrous exceptions). He lets his guests and his supporting cast shine. He is up there with Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Dick Cavett, Jack Paar, Milton Berle, George Carlin and Jack Benny.

Seconded! All you trolls are just spitting in the wind. John is a truly great American. He is brave, smart and funny. When he took over the daily show from Kilbourne, I thought it was the worst idea in the world. I had seen some of Stewart's previous work and did not like him, but on The Daily Show, he found his calling, and that calling was helping to save America from fascism. Well done, John! You did more than your part! Keep up the good work!

We make our own content, much like the Republicans make their own reality. You look at my web content one day and you think, "Gee that's it", and while you're wondering if that's all there is to it, I'm off creating even more new content.

Enjoy.

Ever heard of blogs? For lies they can always turn to Faux News. For the truth, they will be buying some lanterns and sending out some unemployed bankers on a search.

I think all of the news organizations have begun online presentation. The traditional news bureaus are still flourshing and the bloggers are keeping them honest. Its a shame, as the the economic forces tightened, the papers decided to lower local news coverage. If you look at just about any paper still in existence, most of the stuff they have comes from wire services or news bureaus. A lot of the crap comes from the sites that are "selling" something...
The only problem with this is the viewer or reader has to sift through an awesome pile of crap to get to what they need and/or the truth.

"I think all of the news organizations have begun online presentation. "

To date, none of the web news outlets make money with which to pay reporters.
