Republican officials are working overtime, it seems, to draw the first political blood from President-elect Obama by connecting him to the arrest of his home-state governor, Rod Blagojevich. Much of this effort is driven by Obama's own refusal to weigh in on the matter (specifically, the extent of his own staff's contacts with Blagojevich) -- a stance he is perfectly entitled to take, but one that lets GOP officials bemoan a lack of transparency.

Some of the criticisms, however are truly devoid of sincerity, including one being pushed by Illinois State GOP Chair Andy McKenna. In an interview with Politico, the Illinois Republican questioned whether Obama would keep U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald at his post -- the implication being that, since Fitzgerald was now looking into Democratic corruption, Obama would want to get him out of the way.

A basic Lexis Nexis search, as pointed out by Talking Points Memo's Greg Sargent, would have answered McKenna's question: Obama has said that he wants Fitzgerald to continue on the job.

There is, however, even more public information available that McKenna and others could have accessed. Here is a transcript from the Chicago Tribune in December 2006.

In a recent appearance before the Tribune's editorial board, I asked Obama if he thought Patrick Fitzgerald should remain on the job. Yes, Obama said, 'I think he's done a good job.' So, as president, would you reappoint him? 'I think we're jumping the gun on that. I would reappoint him,' Obama said, then appeared to reconsider, adding, 'Well, I don't know where he'll be.'

And here is one from a Tribune editorial board meeting March 2008:

TRIBUNE EDITORIAL BOARD: When you were here several months, maybe a year ago, you said -- either here or, I forgot, outside or where outside, I think it was right here in the room--that if you were, you know, that you would reappoint or seek to maintain Patrick Fitzgerald as the United States attorney... Given the investigations that are going on now, if you're elected president."

OBAMA: I think I said it here in the boardroom...I still think he's doing a good job. Yes.

TRIBUNE: Would you keep him? And why would you keep him?

OBAMA: I think he has been aggressive in putting the city on notice and the state on notice that he takes issues of public corruption seriously.

At the very least, the Tribune itself assumed that Obama wanted to keep Fitzgerald on the job, asking Obama later in the interview whether making such a decision (as if it was a fait accompli) would "threaten or compromise" other political entities in the city.

In fact, if anyone wanted Fitzgerald out of the job, it was officials within the Republican Party. Recall that back in March 2007, the Washington Post got hold of internal Justice Department rankings -- which it sent to the White House -- labelling Fitzgerald among prosecutors who had "not distinguished themselves." This, of course, was in the midst of Fitzgerald's investigation into the illegal leaking of CIA agent Valerie Plame's name.

Meanwhile, the Tribune reported back in April 2008 that "Illinois Republican powerbroker Robert Kjellander" reportedly went to the White House to get Fitzgerald fired (as an effort to squash the Tony Rezko investigation). The person he reportedly turned to in order to make this happen was none other than Karl Rove, who was publicly ensnared in the Plame investigation. Both Kjellander and Rove denied the accusation.

So the moral of the story is that Obama seems more than content with keeping Fitzgerald at his post, and Republicans are wrong to suggest otherwise. Fitzgerald, meanwhile, does a mighty fine job riling members of both political parties.

I have to disagree with the original post and with most of the comments. Obama will RUE the day he EVER kept Fitzgerald on, if indeed he does. The timing of the arrest seems elude almost everybody. After all, the GOP would like nothing better than a special election held in Illinois, not just for Obama's seat, but also for the governorship. Both seats would be there for the stealing, and face it, that's what the arrest is REALLY about and less about Blagojevich's alleged wrongdoing (which we really don't know outside the affidavit, and pay close attention to the fact, mentioned in the footnotes, almost all of the witnesses are on plea bargains or immunity agreements). The DEMOCRATS were pushing this idiocy until they realized they would be walking into a GOP trap. Now they are talking about Quinn taking over for Blago, and Quinn appointing the replacement for Obama. This is what should happen since Blago is a liability. This would stop the GOP's theft attempt in its tracks. The GOP WANTS those seats to use against Obama and run on some kind of anti-corruption theme in 2010 and 2012. It's all about payback for Obama having won the election. Obama needs to sack not just Fitzgerald but ALL of the US attorneys when he gets into office and REJECT all calls for any kind of independent counsel or special prosecutor given the fact the judicial system is full of GOP hacks.

Fitzgerald's not going anywhere unless he decides he wants to.

Anyone with half a brain knows there's no one out there any better....althought there's an up-and-comer that seems to have the same drive and "dig it out" spirit that Fitzgerald has. Can't remember her name.

The republicans believe that everyone will react like bush and his republican acoloyes. They refuse to believe that others in the country have principles. Bush and the republicans have been a disgrace and should be sent back to whatever states will have them.

Sorry, not entitled to do so when there are certain matters here that would require clairification on his part...why are Rahm Emanuel and David Axelrod switching stories? Why not be consistent...say, listen, someone talked to Blago about the pay to play, but because of the investigation, we cannot go further...end of discussion.

An ongoing Federal investigation takes precedence to calming your little heads with "clarifications", which I doubt would help clarify anything for you.
The Feds have it all on tape, rest assure if there's anything it'll all come out, when they see fit. You just need to calm down and let the Feds do their job.

That's what they claim. But pay attention to the timing of the arrest. The GOP wants to steal those two Illinois seats since they couldn't pin Obama on Rezko.

I'm starting to have my doubts that anyone from the Obama transition team talked to this guy he sounds a little nuts like he is not all there. I mean he wanted Obama to use his friend Buffett to get him access to millions of dollars. How do people like that get elected? What am I saying we have corruption at the HIGHEST level of our government right now that sort of filth breeds down. For all we know the stuff about all they will give me is appreciation is probably his delusion over Obama's comment on the issue when he was asked by reporters. I want to know too was he speaking to himself or was he speaking to someone else when he was going on about Obama not giving him anything but appreciation. Because if he was speaking to himself thats coo cooism.

The GOP doesn't care about facts or information, only about trying to smear a president elect who is highly regarded just because he's a Democrat. Despicable...but not surprising.

It doesn't matter what party you are, someone had dealings with Blago, if he is being truthful on the wiretap...someone from within Obama's camp...even if Obama has done nothing wrong, the fact that anyone MIGHT have talked to Blago would be a problem.

The fact that anyone MIGHT have talked to Blogo would be EXPECTED...he was to Gov of the state Obama came from!

It would only be a problem if something inappropriate was said...and it would be on take, so it's not like he could hide it.

You don't know what is on the wiretap. You haven't a clue. Nobody does. We just have an affidavit with claims being made by people on immunity agreements and plea bargains. Blago was being set up from almost the beginning with Levine, a GOP hack from the Ryan administration, and Tony Rezko. Blago may have done it, he may not have. But don't lose sight of the fact the GOP stands to gain from the mess and wants the governorship and the Senate seat if they get a special election.

Watch for the identification of "Advisor B."

Patrick Fitzgerald is a brilliant attorney look at the job he did allowing Karl Rove to tell three or four different stories before the Grand Jury in the Plame Case and protecting Rove and Cheney from Treason charges. during a time of war for exposing the identity of a CIA Agent in the Nuclear Weapons proliferation and WMD field no less...

Brilliant..!

It look like the GOP forgot that BHO is a lawyer, taught Constitutionl law at U of Chicago's law school, cops tell you not to discuss the evidence you have given them, Partick Fitzgerald is a Democrat & a successful federal prosecutor who enjoys his job & isn't seeking another office--overtly. As of now Fitzgerald isn't a threat to Obama.

Pres. Elect Obama is giving a press conference tomorrow. I'm sure he'll put these matters to rest. If he or any of his people talked with Blagowhatever about the vacant seat then that would be expected. If any of his people were approached by Blagowhatever in an unlawful matter, even though they obviously turned down any offers made, then they should definitely be dismissed if they didn't inform Obama or tip off the FBI. Obviously, there are bitter people in this country who wil try to link the PE to this bozo Blagowhoever, but that's to be expected. They don't like Obama anyway and never will.

The Republicans, as usual with Obama, are shooting themselves in the groin. Fitzgerald is precisely Mr. Clean Obama's kind of guy. The more Fitzgerald's the better for Obama. The Clinton and Republican sleaze machines never really laid a glove on Obama because they could never find any "scandal" that would stick. Does anyone seriously think that Obama would have "played ball" in any way with this idiot Blegojevich? As everyone has noted, he kept him as far away as possible for the last year of the campaign, knowing what a sleazeball this guy truly is. Obama crushes the Republicans every time with his raw competence. And he'll brush this absurd guilt-by-assocition maneuver off just the way he did the stupid ploys about Rezco, Ayres, and Wright. Once again, it will be his enemies who look petty, stupid, and, most damningly of all, simply incompetent at political competition.

Sure Fitzgerald is Mr. Clean. Gosh, people, please get a clue. Fitzgerald is just as much a hack as Kenneth Starr. Because they couldn't get Obama over this, the GOP is going to attempt to steal the governorship and the Senate seat, if there is a special election, as payback for Obama's victory. Not one of the Bush US attorneys should be allowed to stay. Not one.

It's called "projection." The republicans are taking what they would no doubt do if the they were in the same situation and projecting it onto Obama. Interestingly enough, they always seem to project the most corrupt, least level headed scenarios on the democrats, probably because this is the way they think and can't imagine how a man with integrity would handle a situation.

Hardly...let's not try to sugarcoat or downplay the consequences here for Obama...even if the corruption here extends only to Blago and a few others, the problem here is that Obama's answers, as usual, are fuzzy, and Rahm Emanuel with his contorted claims of helping with Blago's campaign and then not taking responsibility for it and Axelrod's backtrack on Obama talking to Blago puts unwanted focus where it need not be.
