Designer Yu-Chiao Wang had created a stencil-like robe that requires staying out in the sun long enough to leave a darkened pattern on the skin.

This is nothing new. I remember when I was in high school some * mumble mumble * over 25 years ago their were people, like my brother, who would do this to put profane language on their backs or check, on legs and arms. It was the shock value..

I did this years ago; left my socks on and got sunburned legs. Then another time (ok, more than once) I had my socks off and pants on and ended u[p with red feet. I have a million sunburn stories, little did I know I was making fashion statements...

Yeah, cause it won't work.
That's why people use tape, it has to stick to the skin to come out looking nice.
Maybe a shredded leotard would work...

Finally...tan lines that are groovy.

This would be relatively safe and therefore "cooler" if it was a spray tan. Then again, why not just bring a stencil in to a spray tan booth and do this yourself?

Don't be so sure. Any chemicals you put on your skin, no matter how benign they may seem, can still have a reactive, cumulative or catalytic effect with all the other chemical exposures in your life.

Conversely, the evidence shows that people who live lives relatively devoid of chemical exposures have less problems with exposure to sunlight. Our ancestors evolved needing sunlight to survive - thriving on it. After all, we're not a subterranean species.

Ironically, things like rampant skin cancer are relatively recent in human history and correlate directly to "modern" living in a chemically saturated environment. The skin is the largest organ of the body - and it's permeable. What we come into contact with, as well as what we breathe, drink and ingest, all affect our health ...

... including the chemicals designed to "protect" us.

Our ancestors also went blind before the age of forty from staring into the sun too much.

Evolution didn't take care of everything. Modern skin cancer is much more caused by people who "evolved" in overcast northern European/Asian latitudes moving to every latitude on earth, and fashion.

this is one of the dumbest ideas I have seen yet...its not safe to bask in the sun for long periiods of time. There is this little thing called SKIN CANCER..perhaps you've heard of it?

Yes, it's much healthier to stay indoors all day. If you need to move around, you should consider digging tunnels.

do you get cancer after basking a couple of hours one day?

Very cool idea. I doubt the robe is the best way to achieve such designs but none the less very cool. Much like Hanna, it is fun body art for those who aren't convinced they want a permanent mark on their body.

it would've been smarter to make stick on stencil sheets to use with spray tans. Sounds safer and the pattern will be more accurate. why a robe?? weirdo.

the dragons on dragons den would probably bring up skin cancer and sprint away from this idea

I saw this last spring (recycling old articles?) The Dragon's on Dragon's Den would never invest in this. Everyone that has used stencils knows that unless they are FIRMLY fixed to the article, the pattern will be blurry. The robe would have to be literally skin tight. Then how you get the stencil robe aligned over and over again to finally tan enough to see a clear pattern (?) Big fraud.

The prints on the robe does not match the prints on her back. BOGUS.........

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:24 AM on 12/10/2008

Nonsense! That's clearly a spray on tan. The tan lines don't match the robe cut-outs and while the robe has short sleeves, the model doesn't have tanned elbows and forearms. Nonsense, I tell you!
