Southern Snow

From AP: NEW ORLEANS - A rare snowfall blanketed south Louisiana and parts of Mississippi Thursday, closing schools, government offices and bridges, triggering crashes on major highways and leaving thousands of people without power.

Parts of Louisiana were expected to get up to four inches of snow. Snow also covered a broad swath of Mississippi, including the Jackson area, and closed schools in more than a dozen districts. The National Weather Service in Jackson said up to 8 inches was possible in the southern and eastern parts of the state.

A heavy band of snow coated windshields and grassy areas in New Orleans, where the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning.

Office workers stepped out of high-rises to catch a snowflake, snap pictures with cell-phone cameras and swap snow stories.

At a park in New Orleans' Uptown neighborhood, Sara Echaniz, 41, snapped photos and dodged snowballs thrown by her son, 3-year-old Sam. "He didn't believe it was snow until it started sticking to the ground," said Ecahniz, a native of Rochester, N.Y., who was pregnant with the child the last time it snowed in New Orleans, in December 2004.

In Alabama, heavy rains prompted forecasters to issue a flood watch for parts of the state. Wintry precipitation also was possible later Thursday as temperatures were expected to drop.

Flood watches were issued through Thursday night for much of North Carolina ahead of the storm system. Colder air behind the front could produce snow late Thursday and early Friday in the mountains.

In Louisiana, nearly 7,000 power outages were reported in south-central parishes as falling tree limbs snapped under the weight of ice and snow.

Some flights at Louis Armstrong International Airport outside New Orleans were delayed and canceled. Airport spokeswoman Michelle Wilcut said deicing equipment was being used on planes. Cleco Corp., one of the state's largest power providers, said the number of outages was expected to grow.

Forecasters said the mix of sleet and snow was expected to diminish later in the day as the weather system moved east.

In southeast Louisiana, temperatures were above freezing so accumulations were not expected to linger much beyond Thursday. An inch was forecast for New Orleans.

The wintry weather is rare in south Louisiana, though the state's northern parishes see it about once a year. New Orleans' last snowfall, in 2004, was a dusting that came nine months before Hurricane Katrina struck. The record snowfall for the city is about 5 inches, recorded Dec. 30, 1963.

The weather service said the previous earliest date for measurable snowfall in New Orleans was Dec. 22, 1989.

No, FEMA gave it away, due to the fact they were spending about $1 million each year to "store" it in New York State.......hundreds of miles from where it was supposed to go when the hurricane hit! What a government we have!!!

My husband and I drove to New Orleans this morning before the snow began (it was not predicted that far south), and when we got to our destination - the West Bank - snow was everywhere.

It was beautiful.

I woke up this morning to snow everywhere. It was awesome. We got an inch and a half at my house, and most of it has already melted. Sure is wicked cold now, though. The last time we got snow here was Christmas 2004, and before that, I was 12 or 13 years old. That was in 1989.

Global weirdness. My new favorite way to explain what will be happening...

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:11 PM on 12/11/2008

Global weirdness? That is how I would describe the media and fatalists attitude to a healing world. This is beautiful weather. the planet is back in allignment and is healing. This is what the weather used to do. Rain is returing and life is flourishing. yes those who wish to consume themselves with negativity (a learnt behaviour that becomes consuming) will only see the last ditch attempts by controlling entities to fill us with fear and dillusion, yet this is only a sign of how lost they are and how beautiful things are becoming. Open your heart and feel the new energy fill your heart and soul. Then you can always have a grin when somebody tries to pedal negative rubbish. Bring on the rain!!

Huh? What the heck are you on? Global weirding is the correct term, and is being used by the scientific community now. First time in living memory Moscow is not seeing snow in December. New Orleans seeing snow. You may think it's ok to stir the pot that is planet earth and think everything will balance things out, that may also mean the collapse of agriculture.

The planet is healing?
Rain is returning? To where?

Life is "flourishing," you say? Sounds nice where you are; everything in my yard has been dead for some time now. No rain. Where I live, in the (soon to be formerly known as?) "Fog Belt" of northern California, we've been looking at practically the bottom of our reservoir for the last 5 years or so, and every year it gets lower. Hence the half-the-state-is-on-fire summers (and now autumns) we've been having lately.

Maybe you're speaking metaphorically, about the "big rain" that decimated New Orleans just a few years ago? Or the "frozen rain" that seems to be falling in the south with increasing frequency?

Right wing regressionists hate the planet. How dare you ask corporations to be mindful of the environment. As long as profit is made who cares about the environment. I'm sorry that corporations poluting the groundwater ended up k i l l i ng people but it was all done in pursuit of bigger profit so all that balances out.

How so?
Climate scientists have repeatedly said that global warming refers to the entire world, not to specific areas. The effects locally will be a change in weather patterns.
Also- this falls into the trap of 'it's cold today, therefore climate change isn't true'. You have to look at the long-term record.

You are media puppet. Whatever they tell you, you believe. Look around the world. Rain is returning, tempertatures are dropping. The planet is back in allignment, we are moving into a new level of consciousness, don't listen to those who wish to control you through fear and dis-illusion

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:59 PM on 12/11/2008

Global warming refers to the entire world? maybe that is why it says global???!!!!!!!
You media puppets are so amusing. Why would you want to consume yourself with negative lies? Then argue about something you know nothing about? Global warming is causing local nut trees to flourish.

"It's cold today, therefore climate change isn't true" So your saying "it snowed today, therefore climate change IS true." Is this then the first time in recorded history N.O. has seen snow? If not, is it possible that this is one of those things that happen from time to time. There is certainly nothing wrong with trying to take reasonable care of our environment. However one should look back to the early 20th century when some cities were dark at noon and at least one river burned. As for the lemming like belief in Global Climate Change as it is now labeled, there does appear to be a growing number of experts who do not believe the planet is warming, and in fact believe it is cooling. (supported by actual measurements as opposed to computer models. What part do sun spots play?

This isn't strange, it is how it used to be. What was the cause of the snow back in the 1800's?

It is called Climate change.

I believe that this is Mother Natures way of regulating herself. The world is heating up faster than it is cooling but the cooling will catch up with the warming and we would go into another ice age or something close to it.

It would be hotter this summer than its been in a while. The winters will get colder too. The only difference would be that the winters would be bitter and short initially but will stretch out in time so that we have a shorter summer.

That is my hypothesis and I think it makes sense. Of course, I learned that from the Global Dimming documentary on PBS. They might as well have called it Global Cooling.

We would be saying global cooling not before long but it does not mean we should not clean our environment. Whether the globe cools or warms, a polluted body of water would hold less, to no, life and a polluted air means a bad quality of air for the masses.

To be honest: Global Warming is a misnomer.

It should be called Global Climate Instability = induced by global warming.

I am from the Houston area, and these people think it is frigid with a temp of 30 degrees. Snow, however, is something which is just not seen. In the twenty eight years we have been here, we have seen flurries, on sleet storm which my son took for snow, and two ice storms.

I was at the grocery store when it went from sleeting to snow in about five minutes, and every silver haired lady in the area nearly ran me over in the grocery store. One would have thought it was a hurricane coming. They must have thought they were going to be climbing over snowdrifts.

I lived in Houston from 1985 - 1995. It snowed ONCE...I drove 55 miles from northwest of the city to south of the city during the snowfall, and there was like one other car. When i got to work, the place was closed, even though the managers all lived within 1 or 2 miles...Funny stuff.

Best of all were the few ice storms. There were signs at overpasses that said "watch for ice on bridges." People saw the signs and slammed on their brakes, with predictable results...bumper cars!!
