Southern Snow

From AP: NEW ORLEANS - A rare snowfall blanketed south Louisiana and parts of Mississippi Thursday, closing schools, government offices and bridges, triggering crashes on major highways and leaving thousands of people without power.

Parts of Louisiana were expected to get up to four inches of snow. Snow also covered a broad swath of Mississippi, including the Jackson area, and closed schools in more than a dozen districts. The National Weather Service in Jackson said up to 8 inches was possible in the southern and eastern parts of the state.

A heavy band of snow coated windshields and grassy areas in New Orleans, where the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning.

Office workers stepped out of high-rises to catch a snowflake, snap pictures with cell-phone cameras and swap snow stories.

At a park in New Orleans' Uptown neighborhood, Sara Echaniz, 41, snapped photos and dodged snowballs thrown by her son, 3-year-old Sam. "He didn't believe it was snow until it started sticking to the ground," said Ecahniz, a native of Rochester, N.Y., who was pregnant with the child the last time it snowed in New Orleans, in December 2004.

In Alabama, heavy rains prompted forecasters to issue a flood watch for parts of the state. Wintry precipitation also was possible later Thursday as temperatures were expected to drop.

Flood watches were issued through Thursday night for much of North Carolina ahead of the storm system. Colder air behind the front could produce snow late Thursday and early Friday in the mountains.

In Louisiana, nearly 7,000 power outages were reported in south-central parishes as falling tree limbs snapped under the weight of ice and snow.

Some flights at Louis Armstrong International Airport outside New Orleans were delayed and canceled. Airport spokeswoman Michelle Wilcut said deicing equipment was being used on planes. Cleco Corp., one of the state's largest power providers, said the number of outages was expected to grow.

Forecasters said the mix of sleet and snow was expected to diminish later in the day as the weather system moved east.

In southeast Louisiana, temperatures were above freezing so accumulations were not expected to linger much beyond Thursday. An inch was forecast for New Orleans.

The wintry weather is rare in south Louisiana, though the state's northern parishes see it about once a year. New Orleans' last snowfall, in 2004, was a dusting that came nine months before Hurricane Katrina struck. The record snowfall for the city is about 5 inches, recorded Dec. 30, 1963.

The weather service said the previous earliest date for measurable snowfall in New Orleans was Dec. 22, 1989.

That's what all the smart people are saying. Those who aren't so smart think that a cold day in New Orleans is proof that the Earth's climate isn't changing.

in my 24 years it has snowed 5 times in the Houston area. once in kindergarten, once in the 4th and 5th grades, we had a white xmas 2 years ago, and then last night. snow down here is one of the most awesome things ever. god bless climate change! just kidding, but i guess i can expect more amazing winters before my property is below sea level!

I love how my friends in Houston were calling to tease us here in Dallas.... God bless inclement weather closings!

It was cool to see the last snow storm to hit the Gulf a couple of years back. The kids playing on the beach in the snow was too cool!

STAY WARM!

Some people think a freak weather pattern is a convenient sign that global climate change DOESN"T exist.

It's the INCREASE in freak weather patterns that will inconveniently PROVE global climate change DOES exist.

here, here.
Amazing that so many folks think there is NO Global Warming because of dropping temps.

So here's a quick run down of how Global Warming affects climate.

1. Temps rise due to global warming
2. Ice melts in certain regions - polar icecaps, Greenland.
3. Water from that melting ice gets into the oceans and affects the ocean currents
4. Since those ocean currents pretty much control our climate - viola!
5. We have climate change - which can mean more rain in some areas that never had much and drought in tohers that should have a lot of rain. Also, more powerful storms and yes - snow more frequently in areas that shouldn't have it.

I think the last of the 8 inches of snow has melted off my car. I had nearly forgotten what the stuff looked like.

Gas is still more than it was when Bush took over. It was $1.19/gallon in 2000 where we are.

And odd that the deep south got so much snow when we in the great lakes got sunshine yesterday and zero precipitation where im at.

As of now, there are record-snowfalls taking place in Europe: Switzerland and Austria are drowning in snow, actually.

And winter hasn't even begun, yet.

Skis. Anyone?

It began in the rest of the world already. America's starts each season at the peak/middle of the season for the rest of the world. For example in summer, the first day of summer is actually the longest day, while in the rest of the world, the middle of summer is the longest day.

No such thing as climate change, eh? While this does not prove its existence, it sure gives one reason to wonder.

Don't worry, the Ignorublilcans will say, "Well, it isn't global warming if it got colder yesterday." Sort of like, "If Australia is on the other side of the world, why don't the people fall off?"

Yep, we're just releasing tons and tons and tons of CO2 that was trapped in the form of petroleum, coal, natural gas, etc. for millions of years. You know, it's kind of weird... but when all of that CO2 was in the atmosphere, before it was slowly removed by plant life and sealed up underground, the earth's climate was vastly different. Weird!

Nex' thin' you'll be saying that the earth goes around the sun, when the CLEAR evidence of your eyes shows you that it's exactly the opposite.

I see no harm in reducing emissions and reducing pollution. If Gore and others are wrong about global warming, then okay. They had an honest concern and tried to inform us of the danger. If they are right and we do nothing, then a lot of damage is going to be done. Your list of a couple of scientist is not very convincing since history is littered with scientist that held opposite views of what we then found out to be true. I am sure a couple of them laughed at Einstein too.

That is the point the regressionists on the right refuse to understand. If they happen to be wrong and Global warming is real, what happens to humanity? Does anyone thing we can survive an ice age or worse? But regressionists will never see this.

"Regressionists" are the eco-whackos who hate all human achievement and won't stop until we are back to the stone age.

i'd rather live through an ice age than what's likely to come if the planet warms even 5 degrees on average.

And dumbos who don't understand climate change or the concept of AVERAGE - a result of climate change is BIZARRE WEATHER PATTERNS. That's snowing in the deep South, or say high drought in the Pacific North West, for example. that's an increase in local fluctuation, and an AVERAGE warming across the globe. Wrap your mind around it cause it's on its way to a location near you.

The right wingers who deny the crisis caused by unwise human consumption and exploitation are the worst kind of hypocrites. They thought they had gained a corner market on scaring up votes by "DEFENDING" Americans against the universal human emotional response called "TERROR". (While we're at it let's DESTROY BOREDOM too).

Meanwhile they and their followers are so concerned with alleviating their own neurotic fears that they neglect the fact that some things SHOULD cause terror. In fact, their never ending quest to invent and carryout endless war is exactly the stuff that is causing the end of our planet. In other words, THEIR PHILOSOPHY is TERRIFYING. And that's TRULY terrifying, not just the kind that makes explosions in rich hotels and freaks out the multinational corporations who own the TeeVEE rays.

If he is wrong and America acts anyway the net result is millions of people will be employed in designing and deploying a new generation of energy infrastructure and the country become energy independent in our lifetime. The cost of doing nothing and being wrong is to huge to risk.

The harm should be shown by this current economic crisis; people are living too close to or beyond their means already. Most people can't suffer carbon taxes, higher utility bills, more expensive low-emission cars, carbon offset schemes...

Have you noticed that lots of the people pushing this stuff like Gore, prince Charles, DiCaprio, and the Kennedys are elitists whose wealth would insulate them from all the downsides?
